Nicolas Winding Refn’s MANIAC COP Greenlit; To Shoot This Summer in Los Angeles

Maniac Cop, a modern adaptation of William Lustig’s 1988 cult classic that Nicolas Winding Refn and his partner Lene Børglum are producing, is set to shoot this summer in Los Angeles, with Wild Bunch on board to handle world sales.

Maniac Cop was penned by Ed Brubaker (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Angel of Death) in collaboration with Refn, and will be helmed by John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning).

Set in the present, Maniac Cop follows a determined L.A. police officer who sets out to reveal the truth about the brutal murders of innocent people by one of her fellow cops. Casting for the film is underway.

Lustig and Refn, who have known each others for many years, are serving as creative producers on Maniac Cop.

Børglum told Variety that Maniac Cop will not be a pure horror film but rather a contemporary and realistic action thriller. Børglum said that the long-gestating project took several years to get off the ground because it took some time to secure the film rights, find the right director and partners, and get the financing in place. Christopher Woodrow’s Vendian Entertainment was previously involved in the film.

Although Refn will be creatively involved in the film, Maniac Cop will showcase Hyams’ directing style. “The reason why we wanted to work with John Hyams is because we love his visual style and his ability to work extremely well on a limited budget,” Børglum said.

Valiant's ARCHER & ARMSTRONG Gets ZOMBIELAND Director Ruben Fleischer

Ruben-Fleischer-Archer-and-Armstrong-032417-Dragonlord.jpg

Valiant Entertainment, the independent comic publisher behind Harbinger, Bloodshot and X-O Manowar, is continuing its move into movie production. Heat Vision has learned that the big screen version of action-comedy comic book Archer & Armstrong has found its writer and director.

The adaptation is quickly moving forward with Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer on board to direct, according to sources close to the project. Terry Rossio is attached as a writer. Rossio is known for work on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and was recently named the leader of Legendary's MonsterVerse writers room. Joining Fleischer as producers on the project are Jason Brown, The Mummy's Sean Daniel and Valiant CEO and CCO Dinesh Shamdasani.

The project is being developed in-house before being shopped to studios.

Archer & Armstrong first appeared in a series of the same name in 1992, created by former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, Wolverine: Weapon X writer/artist Barry Windsor-Smith and fan-favorite creator Bob Layton. The series centers around the unlikely friendship between Armstrong, an immortal warrior who has become a drunken self-styled philosopher throughout the centuries, and Archer, a teenage prodigy who has been trained since childhood to murder him.

News of Rossio and Fleischer's involvement in the project, which is separate from the five-picture deal Valiant has with Sony, follows the announcement of Dave Wilson — creative partner of Deadpool director Tim Miller — as director of the company's Bloodshot at Sony, working from a screenplay by Arrival's Eric Heisserer.

Additionally, Valiant is developing another buddy comedy project, Quantum & Woody, for television with Joe and Anthony Russo as executive producers. (Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, currently working on Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp, will script the pilot.)

Edward James Olmos Joins the Cast of Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

Edward-James-Olmos-The-Predator-Dragonlord.jpg

Edward James Olmos is suiting up for The Predator, Shane Black’s reboot of 20th Century Fox’s sci-fi action franchise. Black is directing from a script he co-wrote with Fred Dekker.

The movie is shooting in Vancouver with Boyd Holbrook leading a cast that also includes Room breakout Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski (mine!) and Olivia Munn.

The movie once again features unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in a suburban setting. Olmos will play a military character.

Olmos is a veteran actor who made his mark playing a detective in the 1980s version of Miami Vice and in the acclaimed re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, the Syfy show in the early 2000s in which he played Commander Adama.

The actor, who did a recent stint on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, is coming off of shooting Blade Runner 2049 in which he reprises his character from the classic 1982 Ridley Scott movie. And is due to appear in the pilot for Mayans MC, FX's hoped-for Sons of Anarchy spinoff series.

Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

Robert-Rodriguez-Escape-from-New-York-032417-Dragonlord.jpg

Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct Escape from New York, 20th Century Fox’s remake of the 1980s cult classic that starred Kurt Russell.

Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Co. are producing the feature project, which the studio is hoping to launch as a franchise in the same mold as it did with its Planet of the Apes series.

The original 1981 movie that was set in a future (then 1997) where Manhattan had been turned into an island-sized maximum security prison. When the president of the United States crashes into the decaying city, an outlaw is coerced into traveling inside to rescue him.

Neil Cross, the creator of the BBC crime series, Luther, wrote the script.

John Carpenter, who directed and co-wrote the original, is executive producing the project, which is targeting a production start later this year.

The Escape dealmaking is Fox doubling down on Rodriguez, who is coming off of directing Alita: Battle Angel for the studio. The sci-fi movie is an adaptation of the popular manga and is being produced by James Cameron. Rosa Salazar leads a cast that includes Mahershala Ali and Christoph Waltz. The movie is set to open July 20, 2018.

Unless it's about an old blues man trying to escape gentrifying hipsters who want to absorb his essence in order to project their fronts of individuality. It's not a real post apocalypse New York.

Venom prequel.

I already saw Power Rangers and it wasn't good. My Review

I couldn't go yesterday, but I went tonight, so I can report that...

This is most certainly not a prequel to Venom. If anything a followup to this movie would be more along the lines of Cloverfield.

The creature bears no resemblance whatsoever to the Venom symbiote. It does not bond with a host, it straight up eats them and then grows after consuming their biomass. It is unclear of it splits into more creatures once it's fed enough or if it will continue to grow to kaiju size. The fully grown creature bear a certain resemblance to the original martians from H.G. Well's War of the Worlds novel by way of H.P. Lovecraft, if that makes any sense.

Without going into spoilers I will say that this was a very good movie, but personally I was annoyed by the over-reliance on Diabolus ex Machina to move the plot along. You will understand what I mean when you see the movie.

Netflix is staying in the Adam Sandler business. The company has inked a new four-film deal with Sandler to create original projects for its streaming service. Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will produce each film, which will premiere exclusively on the streaming service.

"Adam Sandler is one of the leading comedians in the film world, and his movies have proven to be extremely successful with our subscribers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to extend our partnership with Adam and his entire team at Happy Madison and keep the world laughing.”

The third film under Sandler's Netflix deal, Sandy Wexler is set to launch on the streaming platform on April 14. The romantic comedy set in the Los Angeles in the '90s stars Jennifer Hudson, Kevin James, Terry Crews, Lamorne Morris, Nick Swardson, Rob Schneider and Jane Seymour.

Amazing New Trailer for JUSTICE LEAGUE Unites DC's Greatest Superheroes

Justice-League-Trailer-032517-Aquaman-Wonder-Woman-Cyborg-Dragonlord.jpg

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League (opens Nov. 17) and it looks amazing. Bruce Wayne recruits a team of metahumans to stand against a newly awakened threat. The preview also gives us our first look at Amber Heard as Mera and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.

I hope Snyder and co-writer Chris Terio learned from the mistakes of Batman v Superman, and to some degree Man of Steel, and stop trying to recreate Watchmen or stop making a mopey, brooding deconstruction adaptation and just focus on making a fun, epic superhero movie.

Aquaman looks badass here. It seems they’re making him the Wolverine (savage loose cannon with an attitude) of the team. The Flash’s super speed scenes looks cool. One thing I like about Ben Affleck’s rendition of Bruce Wayne is it feels he like he is still Batman even without the mask and costume. I didn’t get that vibe from the other Batman actors before him.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Direct, Star in R-rated Musical Comedy WINGMEN With Channing Tatum

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-Channing-Tatum-032417-Dragonlord.jpg

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is eyeing a return to the director’s chair, tackling a movie musical with Channing Tatum by his side.

Sources tell Variety that Gordon-Levitt is in early negotiations to direct Universal’s R-rated musical comedy with the running title Wingmen. He’s already attached to star in the movie alongside Tatum.

Universal landed the pitch that Gordon-Levitt and 21 Jump Street scribe Michael Bacall hatched last year following a competitive bidding war that saw several studios chasing the project.

The story follows two pilots who crash-land in Las Vegas. According to sources, the film is in the vein of Pitch Perfect meets Book of Mormon, with the dup covering Top 100 hits with a touch of adult humor.

The studio courted filmmakers that included Seth Gordon, James Bobin, and Book of Mormon director Casey Nicholaw before Gordon-Levitt threw his hat in the ring.

Production isn’t expected to start anytime soon as Tatum is about to begin shooting the Paramount action-thriller Triple Frontier opposite Tom Hardy. The actor can be seen next in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky.

Ian-Kenny-Han-Solo-Spinoff-Star-Wars-Dragonlord.jpg

Ian Kenny, one of the actors in the acclaimed British movie Sing Street, has joined the cast of Disney’s Han Solo movie, THR has confirmed. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing.

The movie is shooting in the U.K. and sees Alden Ehrenreich portraying the galaxy’s most charming spice smuggler. Donald Glover is playing gambler with the swagger Lando Calrissian, while Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton, among others, are also on the call sheet.

During a talk earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the film will span the Star Wars rogue's years from age 18 to 24. It will show him meeting Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and finding his infamous spaceship, the Millennium Falcon.

Details for Kenny’s character were unavailable. Before making his debut with Sing Street, Kenny appeared in Irish soap opera Fair City.
