US MMA Prospect Report Updated 12/4/2018

Here are the major results of regional US MMA between December 19th-January 11th. Rankings have also been updated.

Not much activity the past two weeks. There was a few marquee fights that took place. While he wasn't included in the rankings, Roger Huerta returned against fellow UFC veteran Hayder Hassan and won by DQ. Seo Hee Ham defeated Jinh Yu Frey for the Road FC Atomweight Title which caused Jinh Yu to slip from the #1 Female ranking to #3. It's a tough loss but Ham is an elite Atomweight. TUF veteran Cory Hendricks made his return for ACB and spoiled the Light Heavyweight debut of slipping UFC vet Konstantin Erokhin. He'll be one to watch out for at 205 in the future. Justin Frazier brought his record to 2-0 in 2017 after making his return after 3 years away from the sport. He defeated Parnell Davis with a Forearm Choke and moved into the top 5. Finally, Kevin Holland defended his XKO Middleweight crown. This is the first time Holland has had a chance to defend his title since winning it in 2016. He's gone 4-1 in MMA (2-0 in Muay Thai) since then and also won the XKO Welterweight Title.

Most Signable Fighter: Kevin Holland (11-3) - Holland is only 25 years old and has made vast improvements in his game his making his pro debut. Early in his career, he took losses to renowned BJJ Black Belt and Bellator Contender Rafael Lovato Jr (7-0) and Fight Nights Contender Ramil Mustapayev (9-1). Since those losses, he's gone 7-1 in MMA with his only other loss to Bellator vet/LFA Contender Curtis Millender (13-3). Lovato Jr. is the only person whose been able to finish Holland.
Resume: UFC prospect Geoffrey Neal (8-2) who will make his UFC debut after beating Chase Waldon on Dana White's Contender Series, Former KOTC Champion David Gomez (17-10), and Grady Hurley (14-2) who Holland handed his first defeat since 2002 (Hurley spent 12 years away from the sport between 2002-2014). Holland is a 2 Division XKO Champion and has been very active the past couple years.

Quite an impressive list, especially since I'm not familiar with 95% of those fighters. I'm a little confused on the women's P4P list. Am I understanding correctly that Pam Sorenson is ranked as #1 P4P? And that Jinh Yu Frey is #3, despite losing to Seo Hee Ham and Ayaka Hamasaki, who are not even listed. And Angela Lee at 8-0, and Weili Zhang at 16-1 are not listed as well?

Exactly. It's only US fighters included on this list. Angela Lee is American but she's not included because she has a long term deal in place with One. Any fighters with long term deals with UFC, Bellator, RIZIN, One, or PFL are excluded due to their contract status. This is essentially only fighters who are Free Agents or can become Free Agents once a major promotion shows interest. With most of the female fighters in the US now signed with the UFC or Bellator, this womens P4P list is pretty shallow.

Thanks for the clarification. It would've helped if I read more closely. Wow. I didn't realize the U.S. talent was so shallow outside the UFC and Bellator. Good job!

Congratulations to #1 Middleweight Tim Williams (15-3) on finally getting his shot in the UFC! He'll fight Oskar Piechota at UFC Fight Night 126 on February 18th. Tim has had a very tumultuous road to the UFC. He was a favorite to do well on both TUF 17 and TUF 19 but he lost in the first round to Dylan Andrews on TUF 17 and in the 2nd round to Dhiego Lima on TUF 19 respectively. After that, he had a couple setbacks against current UFC fighter Anthony Smith. Since then, he's managed to defeat the likes of Jay Silva, Nah-shon Burrell, and Muhammed Abdullah. This is 5 years in the making and is well deserved. KOTC Champion Sidiah Parker now takes the #1 spot.

Former Legacy Champion and #1 Bantamweight Veteran Steven Peterson (16-6) has signed with the UFC. He'll fight Humberto Bandenay at UFC Fight Night 126. Peterson has been close to signing with UFC twice before. He lost to Bellator fighter Leandro Higo at the very first LFA event last year and lost a 5 round Decision. He rebounded later in the year against Ryan Hollis but then lost a close Split Decision to Benito Lopez who ended up signing with UFC over the fight. Peterson will be an exciting addition to the Featherweight Division.

PageMandelSherdog.jpg

After winning the main event of LFA 30 against Nick Barnes with his second straight Head Kick KO, UFC has signed #1 Welterweight Veteran Curtis Millender (14-3). He'll be making his UFC debut against Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 126 on February 18th. Millender has been on quite a tear the last two years. He's gone 6-0 in that time with 3 finishes. Before that, he had spent some time in Bellator and took early losses to Brennan Ward and Fernando Gonzalez. This will be his toughest fight since those fights and maybe his toughest opponent yet.

Part of the TUF 27 roster has been announced and many of the fighters on it are currently on my top lists. Here's who is included:

#3 Featherweight - Jason Soares (10-0) (was recently removed due to inactivity)
#8 Featherweight - Bryce Mitchell (9-0)
#10 Flyweight - Askar Askar (6-0)
#16 Bantamweight - Patrick Mix (5-0)
#16 Featherweight - Tyler Diamond (9-0)
#22 Featherweight - Justin Gonzales (6-0)
#25 Bantamweight - Kyler Phillips (5-0)
FW Watchlist - Yazan Hajeh (6-0)

Here's some other options that haven't been announced but would make good additions to this list.

#3 Featherweight - Jon Neal (10-0)
#13 Featherweight - Ryan MacDonald (8-0)
#24 Featherweight - Joseph Maness (8-0)
HM Featherweight - Kevin Syler (6-0)
Featherweight - Michael Trizano (6-0)
Featherweight - JR Coughran (6-0)
#14 Bantamweight - Eli Tamez (10-0)
#20 Bantamweight - Miles Johns (6-0)
#24 Bantamweight - Brady Huang (7-0)
HM Bantamweight - Travis Quintero (7-0)
HM Bantamweight - Richard Santiago (6-0)
HM Bantamweight - Bill Takeuchi (5-0)
HM Bantamweight - Emeka Ifekandu (5-0)

The hits just keep on coming. UFC signs two more fighters the past couple days.

#7 Featherweight Austin Arnett (15-3) and #23 Featherweight Cory Sandhagen (7-1) both signed with UFC and will face one another at UFC on FOX 27 in Charlotte this upcoming weekend.

Arnett is actually coming off a loss in his last one against Brandon Davis (8-4) on the Dana White Contender Series. It was a back and forth match with some fireworks but ultimately Davis left with the nod. He was expected to fight Drew Brokenshire at Dominate FC in late February but that fight has obviously been nixed. Before the loss, Arnett was on a 13 fight win streak with 9 finishes in that time.

cory-sandhagen-e1388860334942.jpg

Sandhagen is 7-1 and just won a 1 minute TKO against Jose Aguayo at LFA 31 last weekend. He's won two straight first round TKO's. While he doesn't have as many fights as Arnett, he has won some good fights against solid competition. He trains at Elevation Fight Team in Colorado and is a protoge of Nate Marquardt.

Here are the major results of regional US MMA between January 12th-January 31st. Rankings have also been updated.

There has been a TON of fights for Top 10 fighters in January. We saw some of the best LFA shows since they opened the past couple weeks. We saw a few top fighters get signed to UFC and one already fought again! Here is a rundown of some of the top prospects in this timeframe.

#1 Welterweight Veteran Curtis Millender (14-3) finished #10 Welterweight Nick Barnes (12-3) with his 2nd straight Head Kick victory to earn himself a short notice contract for UFC. He will fight UFC veteran Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 126 on February 18th.
#6 Featherweight Thanh Le (8-1) earned the top accolade of his career so far as he defeated #11 Featherweight Bobby Moffett by TKO in the 2nd round. He won the Interim LFA Featherweight Title and is vying for a unification matchup with LFA Featherweight Champion and #1 Featherweight Kevin Aguilar (13-1). The winner of that fight will definitely get signed after that.
#2 Middleweight Ian Heinisch (9-1) made his return after losing an LFA title fight to recent UFC signee Markus Perez in September. He KO'd Daniel Madrid in Round 2. He would be a great matchup for brand new LFA Middleweight Champion and #3 Middleweight Anthony Hernandez (6-0) who won the title just one week after Heinisch fought.
#5 Flyweight Casey Kenney (8-1) took his first fight since his pair of fights this past summer on Dana White's Contender Series. Kenney went 1-1 on the season. He returned at 130 Catchweight to defeat Kendrick Latchman by Unanimous Decision.
#12 Bantamweight Jordan Winski (9-1) fought Mike Hamel and defeated him with an impressive 1st round Armbar. I think a fight between him and LFA Champion Ricky Simon would be good for their next matchup.
#22 Featherweight Cory Sandhagen (8-1) finished Jose Aguayo to earn his 7th win. This win punched his ticket with a short notice fight for UFC. While Sandhagen hadn't fought elite competition in his career, he proved he belonged in the UFC when he TKO'd fellow prospect Austin Arnett at UFC on FOX 27. Keep an eye on Sandhagen in the future at Featherweight.
#11 Flyweight Charles Johnson (6-0) submitted Marcel TongVan in the 1st round in his toughest fight to date and rocketed up the rankings. The Missouri native will be one to watch at Flyweight in the near future.
#3 Middleweight Anthony Hernandez (6-0) takes #14 Middleweight Brandon Allen (8-3) to a Unanimous Decision to become the 3rd person to win the LFA Middleweight Title (Anders, Perez). A fight with #2 Middleweight Ian Heinisch could be in his future.
#2 Light Heavyweight Ryan Spann (13-5) weathered the storm early to defeat UFC veteran Alex Nicholson by 1st Round TKO. This earned him the inaugural LFA Light Heavyweight Title. Spann caught Nicholson with some nasty shots that left Nicholson dazed. At 26, Spann may be hitting the prime of his career and he could be ready for the next level. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing him matched up against #1 LHW Alonzo Menifield (5-0).
#5 Lightweight Zach Fears (8-2) had a standout performance against Lanny Dardar. He was able to finish the 20+ fight vetean in the 1st round. Fears may have to wait for the winner of Robert Watley vs. Brandon Jenkins, but he'll have no issues getting fights in the meantime.
#7 Heavyweight Juan Adams (3-0) showed that he is a threat to the Heavyweight Division if he's able to clean up his striking. He has undeniable power and it will be very difficult to get out if Adams gets on top of you. He could be expecting a callup already and he's on 3-0. But when you're 6'5", have an 81 inch reach, and have been manhandling opponents, they make exceptions to the rules.
#5 Heavyweight Everett Cummings (14-0) defeated Ben Beebe by 1st round TKO on the Bellator postlims. While Cummings has one of the most impressive win streaks at Heavyweight on the regional scene, he's faced cans for most of his career. Still, when you have 14 straight finishes you will get noticed. If he wants to get a real call up, though, he'll need a step up in competition.
#1 Bantamweight Manny Bermudez (11-0) defeated late replacement Seth Basler by 1st round Triangle Choke at Cage Titans 37. He was originally supposed to fight #18 Bantamweight Mike Hernandez but Hernandez had to pull out of the fight. Bermudez has been extremely impressive at Bantamweight and is primed for a signing shortly.
#7 Welterweight Jason Witt (13-4) returned to defeat Honorable Mention Mark Lemminger in front of his home town crowd. He won by 3rd round KO. Witt has had some tough losses in his career, but is currently on a 5 fight win streak.
#8 Heavyweight Brandon Sayles (5-1) won his third straight title fight against Dexter 'Bolo' Carthon and now owns the NFC SHW and HW Titles and the Conflict MMA Heavyweight Title. He took a 5 year layoff between 2012 and 2017. At 36, it's now or never if he wants to make a run at the big leagues. He'll need to keep taking tough fights.

Most Signable Fighter - I think most of the names above are primed for successful major league runs. At 11-0, I think Manny Bermudez is probably the most ready for the next level. Thanh Le, Casey Kenney, Ian Heinisch, and Anthony Hernandez are all probably ready if they're able to get past their next opponents. Jason Witt and Juan Adams are also possible callups as well.

Bellator just signed possibly their best prospect of 2018 and it's only February. #2 Featherweight and 3 division KOTC Champion Juan Archuleta (17-1) has signed with the promotion. Archuleta has been on a 13 fight win streak dating back to 2015 and has dominated in that time frame. It's unknown if he'll be making his debut at Featherweight or Bantamweight.

UFC signed Manny Bermudez, will fight Albert Morales on Feb 24th

Yes they did. Great signing for them. Manny has been on quite the tear and did more than enough to punch his ticket. He was able to earn 1st round submissions over more experienced fighters like Rodrigo Almeida (13-4), Tony Gravely (12-4), and Bendy Casimir (21-15-2).

SHorty Torres is the best guy up to sign right now, he's eyeing up that Chicago card and the UFC would be foolish not to sign him for that card. Think he has a fight coming up soon so if he wins that it should clear the way for his UFC debut.

I agree with you. Shorty Torres probably deserved to be signed after the Pedro Nobre win but it didn't seem like UFC was interested until he got a few extra wins. I would say Torres or Kevin Aguilar deserve to be next.

Believe UFC has offered him a few fights, Contender series spot and the Tim Eillott fight not long ago but he turned them down cause he wasnt ready or hurt or something.

So he's on UFC's radar. If he wins his next fight expect him to be in UFC after that either signed directly for a card or as a late replacement.

According to this post, #3 Women's P4P and top Featherweight Leah Letson will be fighting Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222. Despite only being 4-1, Leah jumped up the ranks with her big knockout of Liz Phillips in Invicta last year. This is also the first non-title Women's Featherweight matchup in UFC. It's good they're finally trying to build the division up. Letson was scheduled to fight Jozette Cotton for DCS in March, but that will no longer be happening.

Wow fantastic job with that thread dude, i'll be looking forward to your updates!
