Arnold Schwarzenegger Joins KUNG FURY Playing the American President

In what sounds like a match made in '80s heaven, Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined the cast of Kung Fury, the feature-length follow-up to the cult 2015 short.

THR understands that the Terminator, Predator and Total Recall icon (and former California governor) will play the American president in David Sandberg's action-comedy, set to shoot in Europe and in the U.S. this summer. He joins fellow '80s hero David Hasselhoff and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, who were announced earlier this week.

The original Kung Fury is a cheesy and comically OTT homage to '80s martial arts and police action films. It became a Kickstarter sensation that bowed in Cannes' Directors Fortnight and has gained over 40 million views worldwide. Swedish filmmaker Sandberg, creator of the short, will also star as the titular hero (the "greatest damn cop of all time") in the new iteration, alongside Fassbender, and produce under his Laser Unicorns banner.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith and Aaron Schmidt will produce for KatzSmith Productions, fresh off the huge success of last year’s $700 million-amassing It remake, while Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Conor McCaughen will also produce. Pelle Strandberg is exec producing on behalf of Laser Unicorns.

The action is set in 1985 Miami, which is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury and his Thundercops, the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After the tragic death of a Thundercop sees the group disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer's quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel through space and time to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy and defeat evil once and for all.

J.J. Abrams Talks 4th Cloverfield Movie, OVERLORD, Calls It a "Crazy Movie"

mCIroad.jpg

It was recently reported that Paramount Pictures is planning to release the fourth Cloverfield movie, tentatively titled Overlord, in theaters. J.J. Abrams is producing Overlord and recently spoke with Digital Spy about the project.

In the interview, Abrams didn’t give much away, saying that he felt it wasn’t really “any fun to release [The Cloverfield Paradox] with everybody knowing that it was coming,” and that the “spirit of these movies” and of the series is to “keep it a secret” so talking about what the next film is and “what’s going to happen sort of feels counter-intuitive.”

When pressed on whether Overlord will fit into the Cloverfield franchise, Abrams remained tight-lipped, simply stating: “Overlord… first of all, it’s something that I can’t wait for you to see ’cause the director, Julius Avery, has done an amazing job on it. But the specifics, you know, we should wait and see. But that’s really a crazy movie.”

Overlord, which is said to involve two Allied soldiers shot down behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day in 1944 who encounter supernatural forces that the Nazis are using to their advantage, has apparently garnered a more positive reception at test screenings than its predecessor. However, Heat Vision notes that the ultimate fate of the film’s release is not yet determined at the studio, so anything goes.

The fourth Cloverfield movie features stars Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, and Bokeem Woodbine, and is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) from a script by Billy Ray (The Hunger Games) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant). Paramount plans to stick to its theatrical release on October 26, 2018.

So I dug around and I found what movie this refers to...

Mads Mikkelsen will star in the action-thriller “Polar,” set in the gritty underworld of political assassins.

[●●●]

Mikkelsen will play the world’s top assassin Duncan Vizla, A.K.A the Black Kaiser who is retiring when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm. Against his will, he soon finds himself being hunted by an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced. Having no choice but to return to the shadowy life he thought he’d left behind, he must use his arsenal of deadly skills to outsmart his enemies and protect an innocent woman.

Mads Mikkelsen was born to play the world’s best assassin,” Bolt said. “He is totally believable as the Black Kaiser in ‘Polar’ and Jonas’ unique, vibrant but grounded and darkly comic style will set ‘Polar’ apart as an unforgettable tale.”

I'm hoping it means someone in Hollywood finally came to their senses and cast her in a action oriented role.

Jung Byung-gil to Direct Sci-Fi Thriller AFTERBURN Starring Gerard Butler

Original Film, G-BASE and Endurance Media are setting action director Jung Byung-gil to helm the Gerard Butler-starrer Afterburn. The film is eyeing a late summer production start from a script by Matt Johnson (Into The Blue). Jung made a splash at last Cannes with The Villainess, and before that Confession of a Murder, which was recently remade into the Japanese-language hit Memoirs of a Murderer.

The film has long been a passion for Butler, and the hope is to launch a new franchise. Based on the Red 5 comic, Afterburn is a futuristic action adventure. Five years after a solar flare disrupts all technology in Europe, a treasure hunter (Butler) goes to France to retrieve the Mona Lisa. Paired with a strong willed weapons expert with her own agenda, the two search for the famed painting and encounter unexpected enemies along the way. They are eyeing future story lines where the character searches for such treasures as England’s Crown Jewels, the Star of India, or China’s Imperial Treasures.

Butler currently stars in Den of Thieves and is about to start shooting the third installment of the Olympus Has Fallen franchise, this one titled Angel Has Fallen. Butler recently wrapped Hunter Killer and Keepers.

TRANSFORMERS Movie Universe to Be Rebooted After BUMBLEBEE Movie

28OI4Ad.jpg

The Michael Bay-led universe of Transformers movies has come to an end. Those attending the Toy Fair 2018 Hasbro Investor Preview this morning were greeted with quite the shock as the toy company announced that the current Transformers movie franchise is getting a reboot, following the release of the Bumblebee spinoff in December.

According to Transformer World 2005, Hasbro revealed that a total reset and overhaul is on the way after the franchise has limped through five films. The ultra-expensive series has been panned by critics, and the last couple of installments have been disappointing in the domestic box office.

Going forward, Hasbro will be taking on a bigger role in producing films based on its property alongside Paramount, the studio behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe films. Hasbro will now have greater control over the movies being made, which includes greenlighting new projects. The company is also said to be investing between $100-$125 million on film and TV content this year.

Following the Bumblebee film, which is set to hit theaters in December, Hasbro has four films currently slated for release through 2021. G.I. Joe and Micronauts are getting new movies in 2020, while Dungeons & Dragons and a Paramount/Hasbro event film are scheduled for 2021.

For now, there are no Transformers movies scheduled through 2021. Hasbro gave no indication as to when the reboot process would officially begin, but it seems as though the focus is currently shifting to some of the company's other big properties.

BLACK PANTHER Bounds to Record-Shattering $242 Million for 4-Day Weekend

upIGCSt.jpg

In a defining moment for Hollywood, Disney and Marvel Studios' Black Panther exploded at the Presidents' Day box office, bounding to a record-shattering estimate of $201.8 million for the three-day weekend and a projected $235 million-plus for the four-day holiday frame.

Those grosses are up substantially from Sunday's estimates of $192 million and $218 million, respectively.

The Ryan Coogler-directed movie — unprecedented in being a big-budget studio tentpole featuring a virtually all-black cast — secured the fifth-biggest domestic opening of all time after blasting past all expectations. And it nabbed one of the top four-day grosses of all time after stomping past Jurassic World ($234.1 million) to land behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($241.6 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($288.1 million). Black Panther could climb even higher once weekend numbers are tallied Tuesday morning; rival studios put the four-day gross in the $240 million range.

On Sunday alone, the movie grossed an estimated $60.1 million, the second-biggest Sunday ever behind Force Awakens ($60.6 million) — and not by much.

Other records broken include that of the biggest opening for an African-American director, the top-scoring superhero film on Rotten Tomatoes (97 percent) and the biggest February bow, supplanting previous champ Deadpool, which took in $152.2 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend in 2016.

Playing in 4,020 theaters, Black Panther is being fueled by a diverse audience. According to comScore, 37 percent of ticket buyers were African-American. Caucasians made up the next largest group (35 percent), followed by Hispanics (18 percent). That sort of demographic breakdown is unheard of for a marquee superhero tentpole. On average, African-Americans make up about 15 percent of the audience for such fare. Females also turned out in force to see Black Panther, heralded for its portrayal of strong women, making up 45 percent of all ticket buyers (that share is usually 35 percent-40 percent on a superhero movie's opening weekend).

Black Panther, which cost $200 million to make before marketing, was a bold move on the part of Disney and Marvel's Kevin Feige.

Audiences bestowed Black Panther with an A+ CinemaScore (the only other Marvel title to earn the mark was Avengers).

Black Panther hits theaters almost a year after Jordan Peele's maverick horror film Get Out transformed into a box-office sensation, although that was a genre pic. And in summer 2017, filmmaker Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, featuring a female protagonist, became the highest-grossing live-action film from a female director.

Overseas — where American films with a black cast can face challenges — Black Panther opened in virtually every major market save for Russia (Feb. 22), Japan (March 1) and China (March 9). The movie earned a mighty $169 million for an estimated global bow of $404 million through Monday, including a hefty $52 million from Imax locations around the world.

Black Panther came in ahead of expectations overseas, but certainly not to the extent it did in North America. Still, it secured the fifteenth-biggest international opening of all time, opening No. 1 in almost every territory. South Korea led with $25.3 million, the fifth-biggest start ever for a Western title. The U.K./Ireland followed with a $24.8 million launch, the best showing of any Marvel title behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and eclipsing the entire runs of Justice League, Ant-Man and the first installments in the Captain America and Thor franchises.

In North America, the only movies that dared to open nationwide opposite Black Panther were Lionsgate and Aardman Animation's family film Early Man and Pure Flix's faith-based pic Samson. Early Man placed No. 7 with an estimated four-day gross of $4.2 million from 2,492 theaters, while Samson came in No. 11 with an estimated $2.4 million from 1,249 cinemas.

Weekend Box Office: 'Black Panther' Bounds to Record-Shattering $235 Million-Plus Bow

Updated: In a defining moment for diversity and Hollywood, Disney's and Marvel Studios' Black Panther debuted to a record-shattering $242 million at the Presidents' Day box office, according to updated estimates.

The bold superhero film passed up Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($241.6 million) to earn more in its first four days than any movie in history at the North American box office, save for Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($288.1 million), not adjusted for inflation. Black Pantheralso scored the biggest Monday in history with $40.2 million, besting Force Awakens' $40.1 million.

Jessica Chastain in Talks to Star as Beverly in New Line's IT: CHAPTER 2

Jessica Chastain is in talks to star in part two of New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

The second installment focuses on the adult versions of the characters subjected to the terror of demon clown Pennywise, and Chastain will play the grown-up version of Beverly, the girl in the misfit group. Sophia Lillis played the character in last year’s movie, which became a surprise phenomenon.

Gary Dauberman is in the midst of writing the script, and Andy Muschietti is returning as director. Bill Skarsgård will return as Pennywise. It: Chapter 2 is set to be released Sept. 6, 2019.

Chastain has been linked to the second installment since the first one opened. Muschietti and the two-time Oscar-nominated actress have had a mutual admiration ever since they worked together on the 2013 horror hit Mama, and Chastain was to have appeared in a post-credit sequence for It that was ultimately scrapped.

PADDINGTON 2's Paul King to Direct Disney's Live-Action PINOCCHIO Movie

Jiminy Cricket! Walt Disney Studios has found a director for its live-action reimagining of Pinocchio. Paul King, helmer of the whimsical and acclaimed Paddington movies, has been chosen to direct the movie, with the studio hoping to being production in the fall.

Released in 1940, Pinocchio was the second animated film made by Disney, after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It adapted the Italian story by Carlo Collodi about a wooden boy puppet crafted by an old carver named Geppetto. The puppet is brought to life by a fairy who says he will become a real boy if he shows bravery. The character of Jiminy Cricket becomes his de facto conscience and tries to steer him in the right direction. What follows is a series of adventures that include Pinocchio being kidnapped to be part of a puppet show, getting turned into a donkey and being swallowed by a whale.

Chris Weitz and his Depth of Field partner Andrew Miano are producing. Jack Thorne, who penned the surprise hit Wonder, is rewriting the script.

Sam Mendes was initially slated to direct the project but left last year. Peter Hedges and Weitz previously worked on the script.

There have been several live-action Pinocchio movies made, including one in 1996 from New Line Cinema that starred Martin Landau and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. None of those were made by Disney, however, which is currently in the midst of bringing to life, Blue Fairy-style, its animation library.

King has won over jaded execs and skeptical adults with his inventive storytelling in bringing to life the Paddington tales, becoming an in-demand filmmaker in the process. He just signed on to direct Warner Bros.’ Willy Wonka, a reimagining of Roald Dahl's classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

NIGHTWING Director Chris McKay in Talks to Direct DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

Chris McKay, who recently directed “The Lego Batman Movie” pic for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to direct “Dungeons & Dragons” for Paramount Pictures.

Michael Gillio will be penning the script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing. The pic will be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly created AllSpark Pictures. Launched last October, production company aims to transform itself into an industry player to rival Marvel Studios.

Hasbro’s lines of toys and games include Mr. Potato Head, Monopoly and My Little Pony. Its products have inspired films with varying degrees of success. Paramount and Hasbro could not be reached for comment.

The film has been in development for some time but the lawsuit between Sweetpea Entertainment and Hasbro about ownership of sequel rights delayed progress. Once the settlement was finalized in 2015, Hasbro moved the project from Warner Bros. to Paramount and eventually to AllSpark after announcing the new studio.

McKay has been high on various studios’ lists since helming “The Lego Batman Movie” movie last year; he went on to land the coveted directing job for the Warner Bros. and DC movie “Nightwing.” McKay is also an exec producer on the “The Lego Sequel” which is currently filming.

Joss Whedon No Longer Writing and Directing BATGIRL for Warner Bros.

Joss Whedon is saying goodbye to DC Entertainment heroine Batgirl. Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer among other pop culture touchstones, is exiting the Warner Bros. feature project, which he was writing and was slated to direct.

"Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story," Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. Referring to DC president Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. Picture Group president Toby Emmerich, Whedon added, "I'm grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed?'"

Whedon came on to Batgirl almost a year ago, in March 2017, with the hopes of bringing to the big screen a companion to the female empowerment icon Wonder Woman, with this one tied to the most popular character in comics, Batman. Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon.

But sources say that Whedon, after a year of trying, could not crack the code of what a Batgirl movie should be. Wonder Woman, meanwhile, became a cultural phenomenon as well as one of the biggest hits and most acclaimed movies of 2017.

Industry sources add that even as Whedon faced story issues, in today's cultural entertainment environment, a male filmmaker may have faced greater public scrutiny if he were to have tackled a movie with such feminist importance such as Batgirl or Wonder Woman, much like a white filmmaker would have seen backlash taking on the Black Panther movie.

Whedon has been credited as a pioneering voice for female-focused genre fare, having created the hit TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer two decades ago.

He does have a strong relationship with Warners, who brought him into the company's DC fold to take over last year's Justice League when director Zack Snyder was sidelined due to a family tragedy.

Whedon will face no shortage of suitors, as Netflix, Apple and others will likely vie for the next creation from the writer-director behind cult TV series such as Firefly and Dollhouse.
