How would you handle going back to the pre-Internet, pre-television days of radio?

Before the Internet, there was television. And before television, there was radio.

How do you think you'd handle it if you had to go back to that bygone era, when radio was the most advanced mass communication device to be found inside a home and a fun night indoors was the family gathered around the radio listening to the latest episode of The Shadow?

For news and entertainment there's the radio, newspapers and books, or if you want to go out then there are movie theaters. No Internet. No TV sitting in the living room. No smartphones.

Could you handle it or no?

Well in that scenario, we'd just have to handle it. It sucks but it's not like we'd just off ourselves just because we're living in a shittier time

Grew up on a reservation...

Could do..

No fucks given..

SAD.

Most of us would probably be better off tbh.

I wonder this, actually. I'm not convinced that all the technology we have today is a good thing.

It seems to me that life was a lot more about "community" back in the first half of the 20th century than it is today, as our technology has made it easier and easier to just sit at home and be comfortable. Back in the day it seems like you pretty much had to go out and be social if you wanted some excitement in your life, especially if you were single.

going back in time? not a problem. dealing with life without internet in modern day? extremely challenging.

Better than most. I listen to a ton of radio and podcasts as is

I listen to lots of radio so all good. We can still have YouTube right?

I listen to talk radio all the time, so it wouldn't be an issue. The whole lack of porn thing would really fuck me up though. Not sure the Sears lingerie section would get the job done.

Too hard to go back like that, knowing what we now know.

There was an island-wide power outage here a few years ago and all we had was a battery-powered radio. It sucked much more than I thought it would, and we were on a boat for another island within a week.

You would probably resort to the unthinkable, actual sex with real women.

No, I couldn't handle it. But it would probably be quiet and peaceful. Easier in a way, more difficult in some.

It's like asking the question: If you had a timemachine, would you wanna be your 5 year old self?

Well radio today isn't what it was in its heyday. It no longer serves as an all-purpose source of entertainment. Good luck finding a radio drama on the airwaves today, for instance.

But more importantly, you were just suddenly thrust into a situation where all the usual shit you depend on was gone. What if instead you were thrust into a situation where society was already acclimated to not having TV or the Internet? Do you not think that you could successfully adjust?

I'd probably have more than 2 children that's for sure.

I tend to think it would be more chill and peaceful. Life wouldn't seem as if it moves at such a fast pace.
