Elections Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Establishment Democrats' Wakeup Call

Given that the US provides 13 years of public education, to virtually every student in the nation, and has done so for at least a century, do you really doubt that the US could afford to provide an additional 4 years of public education to a much smaller percentage of students?
Have you seen the students today's public school systems puts out? Anyone with any sort of money, spends it on private education

Just expect the quality to reflect the cost.

Princess Crazy Eyes is the future of the Democratic party, LOL.

The leftist views of Ocasio-Cortez are the future of the democrat party, but it won't be a national party anymore unless they are successful bringing in new voters with their open borders policy. That's why they will never give up on that issue until they are destroyed. Trump has to fight them tooth and nail to implement his immigration policy no matter what the cost may be. Republican voters abandon the republican establishment primarily because of the immigration issue, and now Trump has to solve the problem once and for all before he's out of office or our country will be lost.

Tom Perez is an off putting weirdo that will never sway anyone over to his side. I'm surprised he admitted that the democrat party is now the party of radical leftist. That's what it is, but democrats usually pretend that's not the case to help them on the national level. I think democrats are obsessed with the NAZI's because they see themselves as the communist that fought them. Perez looks like Lenin with aids.

How to defeat socialist politicians in a debate- talk about "successful" socialist states.

I love super high taxes. Where do I sign?

Nancy Pelosi Disagrees That Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Win Means Democratic Socialism Is on the Rise
By Gideon Resnick | 06.27.18

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Tuesday addressed Rep. Joe Crowley’s (D-NY) stunning defeat at the hands of democratic socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Asked directly about a characterization from Republicans that democratic socialism was “ascendent” in the Democratic Party, Pelosi dismissed the notion.

“It’s ascendent in that district perhaps,” she said of New York’s 14th congressional district, an exceptionally diverse swath of Queens and Bronx counties. “But I don’t accept any characterization of our party presented by the Republicans. So let me reject that right now. Our party is a big tent, our districts are very different, one from the other.”

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, ran an unapologetically left-wing campaign, championing Medicare for All and the abolishment of ICE, while representing a new face for Democrats and younger voters.

Crowley, on the other hand, was first elected in 1999, chaired the Queens County Democratic Party, and outspent his young opponent ten to one.

“Each of our members is elected to be the independent representative of their district, Pelosi continued. “So nobody’s district is representative of somebody’s else’s district.”

The Democratic leader did say, however, that Ocasio-Cortez was part of an exciting trend in voters selecting women to represent them in Congress.

“The fact that in a very progressive district in New York, it went more progressive—well Joe Crowley is a progressive—but more to the left of Joe Crowley is about that district,” Pelosi asserted. “It is not to be viewed as something that stands for everything else. Are we excited about another generation of people coming into the Congress? I’m particularly excited that so many women are running across the country.”

Pelosi has already faced a cadre of Democratic candidates calling for new House Democratic leadership should the party retake a majority in November. Before Tuesday night, Crowley had been named in that conversation as a potential successor to Pelosi.

Asked whether leadership should reflect a younger, female, diverse electorate and selection of candidates, Pelosi quipped: “Well I’m female, I’m progressive. What’s your problem? Two out of three aint bad.”

Being more progressive does not mean more to the left. Progressivism is its own ideology that exhibits many ideas outside the bounds of typical left-right partisan politics.

Fuck Nancy Pelosi, the dinosaur-aged cunt.

What are these ideas that differentiate progressives from the left, if you don't mind?

For eight years, as the economy steadily improved, many Republicans denounced President Barack Obama as a socialist out to demolish the free market. Obama left office with a 77 percent approval rating among millennials. If he was a socialist, many of them must have decided, socialism can’t be so bad.

It's pretty hilarious when propaganda falls flat on its face. What's more hilarious is that Obama is in no way a socialist yet they conned so many useful idiots into believing it in an effort to paint him and socialism in a bad light. Then there's the kinda-retarded people who believed the bullshit but were cognizant enough to realize that if Obama=Socialism then it can't be so bad.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a Catholic. She will definitely have a lot of progressive Catholics supporting her. I don't know what the percentage of America is Catholic, but I am sure it will help. Her pro-choice stance will cause some division among Catholics. There is already a large divide between conservative and progressive Catholics.

Here is an article she wrote for American Magazine: The Jesuit Review

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her Catholic faith and the urgency of a criminal justice reform

By nature, a society that forgives and rehabilitates its people is a society that forgives and transforms itself. That takes a radical kind of love, a secret of which is given in the Lord’s Prayer: Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And let us not forget the guiding principle of “the least among us” found in Matthew: that we are compelled to care for the hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked, sick and, yes—the imprisoned.

You really think four years at the average public university is worth the $100,000 we are paying now? lol

There's room for improvement, but that's a whole different ballpark than what you're talking about.

well, but after Obama the left went totally progressive and this process continues. Open borders, everything for "free" and even more LGBQTWTF. Even the 1st and 2nd amendment are in question. I see more and more extreme positions. The DNC is in a very bad condition and if the GOP will win the midterms they will fall apart like nothing. midterms are a must-win for dems.

I don't think it is. Do you know where most of that 100k is going?

It isn't going to teachers and and more space for more students. It is going to buy prestige. It is being spent on state of the art sports facilities, shiny buildings that aren't needed, but are built for prettier astetics, where older functional buildings are tore down. That money is going to school accounts that already have a billion dollars in them, that aren't being spent.

Our Universities are being ran by boards that view tuition as a piggy bank, to build up their country club.

Pensions aside, many many many companies in the tech field offer better benefits and strong retirement plans.

Do we get off every other Friday and 8 weeks a year and leave at 3:30?

No, but that’s the reason govt gets nothing done.

hi there Rob and happy 4th!

yes, right.

the reason Trump's government can't get anything done is that teachers have to scramble in the summers to make ends meet, since they are fired for 2 months out of the year.

More on Cortez and Catholicism:

The Catholic roots of the New Socialism
The “patron saint” of today’s Democratic Socialists of America got his start with Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker Movement. But for Day, prayer and the sacraments came first, not “the revolution.”

While Ocasio-Cortez’s economic rhetoric draws heavily from Catholic social teachings on human dignity, it is a redefined and hollowed-out Catholicism in many respects. Human dignity for Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialists of America requires full reproductive rights. On her website, Ocasio-Cortez demands “reproductive freedom for all individuals of marginalized genders, including cisgender women and trans people…Alexandria does not accept any federal, state, or local rollbacks, cuts, or restrictions on the ability of individuals to access quality reproductive healthcare services…open access to safe legal, affordable abortion.”

Ocasio-Cortez is a direct descendant of Harrington (Michael Harrington an ex-Catholic inspired by Dorothy Day who started The Democratic Socialists of America), drawing from the same rhetoric and strategies. But, today’s movement is a Democratic Socialism that has been emptied of any pretense of Catholicism.

For [Dorothy] Day, faith and prayer came first. An obedient daughter of the Church, Day supported Catholic teachings on divorce, contraception, and abortion. She often spoke of the need to return to the spirit of Franciscan poverty, charity, and obedience. So obedient, it has been said that Day would have closed down the Catholic Worker movement if Rome had asked her to do that. In contrast, for Michael Harrington, the socialist revolution came first. It is difficult to predict whether progressive Catholics will follow the sacramental model promoted by Dorothy Day, or the “pious apostasy” of Michael Harrington.

Like this? No, absolutely not. The backlash to the Trump presidency is unprecedented in this country.

hello Seano,

hyperbolics aside, i have to disagree.

for all the sturm and drang about how Mr. Trump is rending the nation apart, piece by piece...i don't really see it. the one indelible mark he's left is that he's nominated judges to our courts that are not to my liking.

other than that? not much, really. due to the a number of reasons, the GOP hasn't really passed much legislation on Capitol Hill.

the panic that seems to so exceptional to you seems like business as usual to me. the right was completely unhinged during the Presidency of Kennedy (a catholic POTUS. the insanity!)...of Carter...of Clinton...and of Obama.

jesus...lol. don't you remember the dark warnings of jack booted thugs bashing down doors to take yer guns from ya during the nightmarish eight years of Mr. Obama that you endured? you actually had grown men in army/navy store gear doing jumping jacks and running obstacle courses in state parks, as they readied themselves to fight the Federal Government, hahaha.

how about the hysteria and tooth gnashing that accompanied Mr. Clinton? sure, he got control of the deficit and it was mostly smooth sailing economically....but the MORAL CHARACTER OF THE MAN! ITS TEARING OUR NATION APART!!

how about the crazed reaction of the left to Nixon's presidency? the left called him "Tricky Dick", labeling him untrustworthy of the nation's trust (in this case, the panic was well founded, but whatever).

i've seen this stuff before. its not unique and its not special.

its normal.
