My Socialist leaning Sherbro's, help me understand this one?

We established several posts back that I’m not doing that. Equilibrium prices are inclusive of a number of more or less universal human foibles. This is true. Doesn’t mean its optimal.

Well it's optimal among the options granted, right? Your argument is just that's it not perfect...

Neither group will care if there is not a government regulation against it. FFS american apples are banned in Europe because our regulatory bodies here are already bought and paid for . My daughter has not eaten an apple grown in america her whole life because of this.

Meanwhile lobbyists are doing their damnedest to make it illegal to fucking label foods as organic or as non GMO foods. Anyone who thinks we dont need these government bodies is just plainly wrong.
Did you not just argue against your point that gov't is best to regulate when you say gov't regulation is currently now bought and paid for?

Not to be cheeky but I would put it that I don’t currently know of a less non-optimal option.

Yes and No. We simply must have government regulations to protect people in a number of areas. We need government and we need to work to make it less corrupt.

It is corporate money that causes government regulations to be earned not overlooked etc. Money out of politics solves a TON or our problems.

Why do you have to separate the concepts? Quality Control doesn't include abstention from hazardous or deleterious variables? WTF? Would you define something as "high quality" if it has a high potential of killing you?
You really are a complete jackass.

Simply look at the history of the automobile industry, and shut your mouth.

I agree. Look at it. Is gov't mandating the QC of Ferraris? Mercedes? If so, then how are Fords and Toyota's able to be produced as substandard vehicles without breaking the law?

Seat belts. Ralph Nader. Fucking learn something for once.

So broken clock argument? By the way, the Nader pin has actually been a determinant in time-sensitive extractions. Literature is currently out on whether its actually a net positive.

To get on track, if you're willing to actually fucking nut up for once. Are standards that you see QC (for anything you buy- you choose the industry) primarily responsible because of gov't regulation?

there's a whole huge gray area between 'massively overregulated' and 'no regulations' which apparently gets lost sometimes in these arguments....

I think many would agree that many regulations, at least, are aimed at trying to solve something w/o adding ridiculous red tape or bureaucratic bullshit

But there are clearly others that fall into that exact category, many from OSHA from the top of my head as a Federal Safety Officer and Fire Marshall are completely ridiculous.

You don't get to frame the argument to help your pathetic, naive worldview.

Without Government oversight and regulation, literally tens of thousands of people would be dying. There is no such thing as the "rational actor" in capitalism. That's a libertarian fantasy.

People will lie, cheat, and steal to get as much as they can out of as little as possible. These are the facts of humanity. Without government intervention forced by Nader, tens of thousands more would have died so that car companies could have a better profit margin. Your way of thinking is not only farcical, it's dangerous.

Of course she thinks that. She thinks there's a chance that she will be given even more privilege without having to do any work. That's politics. Get free shit and act like you are virtue signaling so you don't come off like a greedy cunt

Right, which would make that burger low quality, yes? And with that in mind, when its discovered and publicized, who has the greater incentive to adjust the standard?
You're just talking past me because it really punches a hole in your thinking (I already explained how certain aspects of a product can be high quality and it can still get you sick).

You're also refusing to understand there are competing incentives here, as illustrated by your second question. Yes, a company doesn't want a reputation of having poor products but that is balanced with costs. Your also not acknowledging how regulations raises the standards for entire industries which create that incentive to have high standards in the first place. @HomerThompson 's automobile example is perfect, and I'd say airline industry is perfect too. A plane crash that is public and bad enough can have huge impacts on the entire industry, so the regulations are to everyone's benefit since we've reduced the odds of a plane crash to almost nothing.

It also sounds like your position is something shitty happens so the market will punish that company, keeping everyone in line. Kinda sucks for the people who got e coli or who died in a plane/car crash, no?

This takes an appreciation for something called opportunity cost. Denied on lack of evidence.

I agree. So how is that a point in favor having a compulsory funded monopoly?

Seat Belts have saved an estimated 255,000 lives since 1975.

I’m certainly no socialist but I think your friend’s point has some merit. First, I assume we can all agree that attentive, present mothers are vastly important for children’s development and, by extension, society at large. Well my personal observation in business is that many of the most competent and conscious women are the exact type that is most likely to pause their career to attend to children. The problem is that when they try to reenter their career they are not only placed at the bottom of the totem pole, they are placed there as a middle aged individual. Meanwhile many less competent people who may have neglected parental responsibilities have been promoted multiple times. Point being, it’s not only a matter of fairness. It’s also a problem in missassesing talent and ability.

Can't that be said about men as well though? I mean there will be men who are fathers that actually take parental responsibilities seriously...While many men don't and will easily rise up the ladders....Perhaps if we look at families as a whole, we see the women of such said men who don't care much about his family but career, sacrifice their pay since the burden of raising kids is put on the mother.

However in other families where the burden is put on the father to raise the kids, we will see the women earn more...So perhaps we should judge the family as a whole.

Of course in most families, the burden is probably put on the mother however.

Also Neglection could apply to everything as well...There might be people who neglect social lives or who don't give a shit about taking care of their old parents etc, who will benefit way more in the work place because of said decisions even though they are way more incompetent than the people who choose to take care of their old parents or have a social life.

I guess what Im trying to say is that their will be incompetent people who will rise the ladder more than other more competent people simply because they neglect everything else in life and embrace the grind.

I wish we had a better way to judge actual talent/skill but unfortunately, it seems business tend to judge just by grind.

But I'm sure the auto industry would've enacted all those safety measures on their own, because reasons.

Of course they would!!!! That is why the mining industry has always willingly created and maintained standards that have ensured that no one has ever been negatively effected by them. Duh....

That is why power companies spare not a cent when ensuring that pollution from power plants does not impact the health of people especially children. No profits are made in these industries before absolutely doing everything that can be done to protect the health of the consumer.

See regulations just limit profits which cause overall quality to go down cheating the consumer. Corporations would never place profits before the health of people.

You also never see a revolving door with especially toxic industries where every few years or so the company is sold to another shell company ultimately run by the same people to shield themselves from potential lawsuits.

I mean look at Exxon, in the 70's when their own climate scientists told them emissions can and would contribute to climate change what did they do? They immediately made the public aware of that and started investing in green power solutions right? They did not start a 30 year long public campaign to malign climate science and empower deniers.

No regulations are needed man, they are just a from of government control and extraction of profits for useless government jobs.

There are also no sociopaths and psychopaths who ever rise to powerful positions within corporations and big business.

Homer, you just need to be less naive and pessimistic about people man. You need to trust more and also stand up for your fucking self man and quite wanting mother government to take care of you.
