Hey guys I'm looking to get back in the saddle and need a boxing gym in the Manhattan area (Queens is less desirable but works too). Wanted to get some feedback/suggestions on what my options are as an late-beginner to early-intermediate level practitioner.

I've had some experience with Mendez near MSP but (until recently) couldn't afford the $200 a month to work with a trainer. Their timetable is the most flexible as I prefer to train late-ish (around 9pm) but from what I've seen the quality of their instruction is hit or miss; some trainers give a lot of close attention and feedback but just as many (if not more) seem to be phoning it in and going through the motions. Was hoping someone could speak to whether my impressions are accurate.

I've also looked into Church Street and my understanding is they have a pretty well regarded class setup and solid instruction but their schedule isn't the most convenient for my work/study needs. That said I've always felt partner drills were a key component of a solid boxing education and they seem to be of the few schools that really emphasize this aspect of training. Being $35 cheaper and near the AC & R trains also sweetens the deal. Only downside is I'd have to start waking up an hour earlier to take their early morning classes as I can't make my schedule work with their PM sessions.

Other than these looked into supreme team in LIC/Astoria but having spoken to some acquaintances who've trained there my impression is it's more of a "boxfit" type of deal with minimal technical instruction. I also find it immensely irritating that I can't even so much as see their schedule without being a member and their hours aren't the greatest. Woodside boxing in Queens looks to be a solid choice but I'm also having trouble finding any info about their schedule and from what I can tell the gym is pretty sparse with regards to strength & conditioning equipment - this isn't a dealbreaker per se but I'd prefer to not have to shell out another $50 for another gym to do my weights/general cardio at.

I'm also quite curious as to where the rest of y'all NYC folk train, I've found that an environment with like minded individuals is the most conducive to improvement. Again this plays on the importance of partner drills and whatnot. Any other suggestions about spots I might have missed are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance folks.

I did some mitt work with a woman who trained out of Church Street when she came in to Portland for work. She was a killer and had great technique. Speaks well of their program

Why didn't you like mendez boxing again? Their good, and very helpful and have a good teaching environment, they also have 2 muay thai instructors over their that teach, it's just not on the website. Mendez boxing has a lot of pro boxers coming through and I even got the chance to spar with mikey Garcia before his title fight MSG, you can get a lot of good training over their and plenty of people to spar with.

I'm in the same boat as you right now I'm getting back into training in a legit gym, I was training in the YMCA with an undefeated amateur muaythai champion but now he's too busy with work and his music career. Best of luck to you man, and hopefully you get to fight this year and knock a motherfucker out.

i was told church was a cardio gym basically if u arnt a good pro your wasting time so not sure what t really believe to me the best boxing gyms generally are tiny gyms with 4 to 8 guys and u get tons of 1 on 1 i was fortunate to have this my city was a very strong place for amateur boxing from the 50s-90s very strong boxing culture at this gym but by the 2000s it died but the old trainer still was there and trained guys free

when id go to other cities or see mma guys train at striking gyms i feel sorry for them having to pay money for trainers who arnt near as legit as the old school coaches i worked with if you do some lookng u can usually find a free boxing gym or next to free but usually arnt in the greatest neighborhood and dirty old gyms but if u wana get good fast...

You got to PM me some free boxing gyms in NYC, because I'm doing self training at the Y right now, and it would be good for me to get some supervision and instruction from a boxing instructor.

Hey bruv, I've asked about Mendez before on here, and nobody got back to me. I've been training at another place and busting my ass doing it, but training at mendez would be a lot easier for me because of the commute.

Can you by chance recommend me the Muay Thai trainers you mentioned, and what are there names? I visited there earlier this week, and the people at the front said they are indie contractors who you have to pay for a session. That can get pretty expensive.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Iron Khan, pm'd you too. Excuse my weirdness, just trying to get to the bottom of it.
