Hey guys I'm looking to get back in the saddle and need a boxing gym in the Manhattan area (Queens is less desirable but works too). Wanted to get some feedback/suggestions on what my options are as an late-beginner to early-intermediate level practitioner.
I've had some experience with Mendez near MSP but (until recently) couldn't afford the $200 a month to work with a trainer. Their timetable is the most flexible as I prefer to train late-ish (around 9pm) but from what I've seen the quality of their instruction is hit or miss; some trainers give a lot of close attention and feedback but just as many (if not more) seem to be phoning it in and going through the motions. Was hoping someone could speak to whether my impressions are accurate.
I've also looked into Church Street and my understanding is they have a pretty well regarded class setup and solid instruction but their schedule isn't the most convenient for my work/study needs. That said I've always felt partner drills were a key component of a solid boxing education and they seem to be of the few schools that really emphasize this aspect of training. Being $35 cheaper and near the AC & R trains also sweetens the deal. Only downside is I'd have to start waking up an hour earlier to take their early morning classes as I can't make my schedule work with their PM sessions.
Other than these looked into supreme team in LIC/Astoria but having spoken to some acquaintances who've trained there my impression is it's more of a "boxfit" type of deal with minimal technical instruction. I also find it immensely irritating that I can't even so much as see their schedule without being a member and their hours aren't the greatest. Woodside boxing in Queens looks to be a solid choice but I'm also having trouble finding any info about their schedule and from what I can tell the gym is pretty sparse with regards to strength & conditioning equipment - this isn't a dealbreaker per se but I'd prefer to not have to shell out another $50 for another gym to do my weights/general cardio at.
I'm also quite curious as to where the rest of y'all NYC folk train, I've found that an environment with like minded individuals is the most conducive to improvement. Again this plays on the importance of partner drills and whatnot. Any other suggestions about spots I might have missed are much appreciated.
Thanks in advance folks.
