What’s preventing UFC/MMA from being the #1 sport in the world?

People say soccer is the #1 sport in the world because it’s accessible. Whether you’re rich or poor all you need is a ball. You don’t even need a ball in MMA. So shouldn’t MMA be or have the potential to be the #1 sport in the world? Throughout mankind fighting has been in our DNA. So what’s keeping MMA back from being the biggest sport?

Is it because Dana is holding it back?

Is it because the talent is holding it back?

Is it because grassroots MMA is holding it back?

Or is it because millennials do nothing but stare at their phones, don’t engage in sports, are to blame with everything wrong this generation and therefore holding the sport back?
McGregor are pushing UFC to catch soccer with marketing alcohol more, and we all know soccer is boring without beer

Because its a combat sport.

The physical competition and violence in something in our blood as humans but it's only going to appeal to so many people. Combat sports won't be #1 unless the world drastically changes

probably that its too JBG for most:

And that's fine... i liked it better before it was watercooler talk anyway

3) Fans have more affinities with teams, either because of location, city, state, etc or because they represent a nation. Very few fans will have the same affinity with individuals

It didn't used to be that way. They took every bit of the personality they could away from the fighers. Can't wear that hat.... can't bear that logo.... can't walk out to the music you want....

Just keep throwing money at Dana and his friends.

its true of any individual sport

people may support a guy who comes from their country, or their town, but they will never support them with the same fervour they support their football team, or rugby team etc

its also a bit about how often they compete

you support a team that plays 40 weeks a year, not some guy who might fight cnce

Too bloody for mainstream appeal. Stupid shit like top 5 organization talent throwing sealed monster cans at crowds, throwing Dolly's at a bus and injuring people, hit and runs on pregnant women, publicised cocaine use, a bunch of steroid bullshit. Pre fight and post fight brawls. Having a domestic violence survivor on card with a guy who used a woman as a speed bag.

Shit like that

Agreed that foozball is ingrained in culture.

That said, soccer is so fucking dumb. I say this as a division II Champion.

It's almost like rasslin. The way they take dives and all that garbage makes it not authentic to a large degree.

The video of players practicing taking falls is a disgrace to real sports.

I also think that as our Earth grows, we will eventually steer away from violence, leaving MMA hopes back.

Not sure what the leading form of competition will be, though I don't think MMA will hold that torch.

  1. it's not a sport, it's a circus show.
  2. the sanctioning bodies and drug testing entities are bought and paid for.
  3. wrestling sucks balls and nobody wants to pay to watch that shit.
  4. no competent mma journalists.
  5. no real personalities outside of UFC.
  6. no money being investing in watching, discovering and showcasing talent out of high school.
  7. wrestling sucks balls.

The more popular sports are more fun to watch because of the finesse and co-ordination combined with balance and strength. It’s like watching a great dancer or an elite ballet company, compete against another. With a ball of some sort. With an EASY TO FOLLOW AND UNDERSTAND point system so you KNOW WHO IS WINNING AND WHO IS LOSING. This makes the end of any game suspenseful. Can the winning team, or golfer, or tennis player hold on to the lead down the stretch or will the losing side pull out a victory. MMA has a scoreboard that’s difficult to understand and impossible to see in real time, which means there is rarely the suspense that should be there in the final round. Not to mention less agility and grace displayed by the competitors. How many times does the final bell ring and both fighters raise their hands in victory. That’s not fun for fans to have to wait to figure out who the panel of judges ‘decided’ was the real winner; when the fans have no clue how the judges were scoring the fight along the way.

Isn't the beginning contract for a newer fighter still around 12k/12k? That's not going to attract good athletes who've been training from a young age like basketball or football do.

And there's the complete lack of a merit based ranking system; shots are given more on presence than ability in many cases. Not everyone who is good at fighting is good at that.

Also the judging is inconsistent, the refs are inconsistent, the promoter shit-talks more fighters than he promotes and expects the fighter to do their own promotion. And on top you're practically guaranteed to have brain damage if you compete in MMA for long enough.

They'll have to offer a lot bigger piece of the pie to fighters if they want to attract life-long athletes in the future. You'd have to actually be pretty stupid to dedicate yourself to MMA in this climate imo.

Combat sports will always be a niche sport.

'
cause there about 100 guys who are making a shit ton of money and 100;s of 100;s of million of fans care about soccor. like 25 soccer teams are worth many billions

MMA, being an individual sport, doesn’t pacify our collective need for tribal conflict in the same way team sports do.

Nothing better than bashing another persons face in for no reason other than the fact that they’re wearing a different color shirt than you.

Fuck the Pats.

Lots of people find combat sports like mma and boxing to be barbaric.

hit the nail on the head there , thats exactly it , its human cock fighting

It probably has something to do with the JBG being a bit too much for kids. I wish mma was in schools. I’d go every Friday night to see the KO’s and limbs snapping at the local middle / high schools. As it is, mma is something I feel like most people stumble upon rather than grow up with. Not the case for us Sherbrozos though

You idiots wont realize this, but MMA is a brutal sport, more brutal then boxing. No matter how UFC markets their brand, they will never swing the majority of population that hates the sight of blood.

Fighting itself is already the most popular “sport” in the world. So it seems it would be possible to lift that to the highest revenue, to an extent.

Joe Rogan(I believe)said if you have a 4 way stop and each corner something is going on. One corner they’re playing basketball, one corner they’re playing baseball, one corner they’re playing soccer and one corner Theo guys are fighting. Everyone is watching the fight.

The sad state of its fans culture. Seriously look at the sad and pathetic behaviour of those who post here. All MMA sites that allow open forums are loaded with people who talk shit to no end.

When Ali was competing, his fights got more viewers then Football/soccer and the fucking moon landing. They estimated a billion people watched Ali vs Foreman.

Have you ever followed any other sport? Its even worse on Basketball forums

I think that Dana is absolutely the wrong guy to guide MMA to the next level of participation. However.....

Millennials love other cultures and hate America. If soccer was an American sport they would hate it. If UFC was something that clearly came from Europe or Asia they would love it. I know that Martial Arts came from Asia, BJJ came South America, etc. -- but Mixed Martial Arts is perceived as American and they hate all things American. Just ask talk to any recent graduate of a Liberal Arts College or public University -- they'll be glad to talk about how bad this country is.
