So, it may finally be happening.
It was reported about a week and a half ago that Yoshiaki hirabayashi, producer of the Resident Evil HD Remaster, had put together a pitch to Capcom for a RE2 Remake.
Capcom's facebook page has surveyed fans about their interest in a remake of the classic sequel for years, but more recently it seems the surveys have increased--and the response has always been positive.
The HD remaster of the Resident Evil remake, formerly a Gamecube exclusive (and later on Wii), went on to break records for Capcom's best-selling digital title when the enchanced version was released worldwide across various consoles early this year.
As a massive fan of the original trilogy, I have a love/hate feeling towards this project, as it has the potential to be both great and absolutely horrible.
RE2 is such a timeless classic.
If you owned a PS1, chances are you owned Resident Evil 2, or least played it frequently over a buddy's house. If the remake fails, I don't believe it will taint the original. What it will do however, is create a reluctance to return to the original formula: Horror, isolation, and having to truly survive throughout the game--without an onslaught of weapons and seemingly superhero-esque characters.
Frankly, the original fans of the Resident Evil/Biohazard franchise have gotten old.
Capcom stated a few years back that they were not only targeting the action-oriented fans of the Call of Duty franchise, but that they were also focusing towards a younger demographic, as they feared that the original audience was on the verge of "outgrowing videogames." Though it seems with the recent success of the Remake HD port (along with the widespread criticism of RE6), they have changed their minds.
As for the remake of Resident Evil 2, they have a masterpiece to work from:
--The story is there.
--The characters are there.
--The layout is there.
--The music is there.
In my opinion, all they would need to do is update the graphics (along with some great cinematics), make some minor adjustments to the controls, and hire some decent voice actors.
Until then, we have Resident Evil Zero HD coming out in October, and somewhere in the wings, the curious Resident Evil 7, which I suspect will also attempt to return to the roots of survival horror.
So how do you feel about this potential remake?
