Recommendations on starting running ?

Take short walking breaks during jogs/runs if you're not recovering fully. Save your legs for the long slow run once a week.
If you can run 10k without shin splints with just a few weeks from zero then you're doing great. I faced common running issues for a long time when I started.

So l never run, but I recently agreed to run in a 10k for Parkinson's disease (a close family member was recently diagnosed).

Only problem... I don't run!

Any thoughts on getting into this running thing?

Well, it's a tough sport but here goes.

You put the one foot before the other. A little brisk like. Not too slow. Then you do it again.
Keep doing it till you reach 5km.
Turn n repeat.

Well you only have a few weeks left and I assume you can run atleast 4 miles without stopping.

Run 4 Miles at a pace where you dont have to stop. Doesn't matter if your time is bad, just as long as you don't stop and finish the 6.2 miles you are go. Get a 4 mile run in Monday. Run 5 Miles Weds or Thursday. Run 3 miles On sunday, run 5 miles tuesday. Rest until Saturday

Have you ran it yet? I just signed up for a 10k on the 28th.
