According to the FBI there are between 25 and 50 active serial killers operating in the US right now.
One of the scariest serial killers out there was the Original Night Stalker also known as the East Area Rapist and the Golden State Killer. 50 women were raped between June 18, 1976 and July 5, 1979 in the counties of Sacramento, Contra Costa, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Alameda, Santa Clara and Yolo in California. He would break into the houses after dark, proceed to tie up any occupants in the house and would threaten to kill them if they didn't comply with him. He would almost always rape the female or females inside the house. Authorities also linked the serial killer to 12 murders committed between October 1st, 1979 to May 4th, 1986. What makes this one of the more compelling cases is the fact the Original Night Stalker would usually call the victims houses before breaking in and would either just hang up, breath heavily into the phone or leave a very short message.
On January 2, 1978 he called one of the victims and left a voice message stating he was going to kill them.
After the murders committed on May 4th, 1986 both the rapes, break ins and murders stopped and the authorities do not know why. The only development since then was a phone call one of the victims received in 1991 from the serial killer himself. She spoke to him for about a minute and said she could hear a woman and children in the background leading to the suspicion he might have started a family.
The case is still open and the theories are that he might have just completely quit that life style and is alive and leading a normal life. As well there is another theory stating the individual might have died at some point after 1991 and finally that he might be in prison for another crime or crimes he committed. Nobody knows what happened to the Original Night Stalker post May 4th, 1986.
They need to do a movie on this guy, or a Netflix series. His prime years span enough for a series like Narcos.
