The first-ever live-action Pokemon movie has finally found its lead. Justice Smith (The Get Down) will star in Legendary's feature based on the mystery-solving Detective Pikachu character. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is set to helm from a script by Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch.

Detective Pikachu is planned as the first in a series that will be based on the popular Pokemon franchise, which spans card games, video games, TV series and animated films. There have been 20 Pokemon animated features, beginning with Pokemon: The First Movie — Mewtwo Strikes Back in 1998.

The Detective Pikachu movie has been a priority for Legendary since the company acquired the rights to the Japanese property in July 2016, following the Pokemon Go mobile game craze.

The Pokemon Company's longtime partner, Toho, will handle distribution of Detective Pikachu in Japan. Universal Pictures will handle distribution in all other territories.

Smith, who appeared in the John Green adaptation Paper Towns, will star opposite Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in Universal's Jurassic World sequel. The actor is also set for the MGM feature Every Day.

Kathryn Newton Cast as the Female Lead in the Live-Action DETECTIVE PIKACHU

That live-action Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu, is still happening, no matter how strange it might seem. Detective Pikachu continues to slouch its way towards existence by casting its female lead, Big Little Lies and Halt and Catch Fire actress Kathryn Newton. There are no details on just who Newton is playing, but it’s safe to assume she’s not playing the eponymous pocket monster detective.

Every day, we get closer and closer to a world where a live-action Detective Pikachu movie is a thing that exists. As if to underline the point, Variety reports that Kathryn Newton, who played Reese Witherspoon’s daughter on the hit HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, has joined the film as the female lead. Newton joins a cast that includes The Get Down‘s Justice Smith, who was recently cast as the male lead.

Detective Pikachu will not be your standard Pokémon adaptation. While many assumed that a live-action Pokémon film might have something to do with the wildly popular video game series about exploring a world and capturing monsters and competing in duels with fellow Pokémon trainers, this film will instead be an adaptation of the game Great Detective Pikachu. In the game, a boy named Tim Goodman encounters a Pikachu who claims to be a detective. Tim can understand what this Detective Pikachu is saying, and thus decides to team up with the mystery solving monster to help solve mysteries involving otherPokémon all over the city.

Detective Pikachu will be helmed by Goosebumps director Rob Letterman, with a script by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls). Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the film outside Japan, with The Pokémon Company’s frequent collaborator, Toho – of Godzilla movies fame – will tackle distribution in Japan.

Ryan Reynolds to Play Pikachu in the Pokemon Movie DETECTIVE PIKACHU

Ryan Reynolds is going to catch 'em all. The Deadpool star has signed on to star in Legendary’s live-action Pokemon movie, THR has learned.

Reynolds joins Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton in the movie, titled Detective Pikachu, based on the gaming franchise.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project, which is due to start shooting mid-January in London. Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script.

The concept of Pokemon, which was initially a card-collecting game as well as an anime, sees players acting as trainers who collect cute but powerful monsters called Pokemon in order to compete in battle tournaments.

Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu.

The story is kicked into gear when Smith's character's father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

The role is said to be motion-capture in nature, sources say.

Many details of the project are being kept off the grid, including the casting, which has been underway under the radar by the usually secretive Legendary.
