Paramount Sets Release Dates for G.I. JOE, MICROANUTS, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

662TUUM.jpg

Paramount is playing the release dating game Monday, with the studio carving out territory for four tentpoles.

A film simply titled G.I. Joe will hit theaters March 27, 2020. The studio previously released two films based on the Hasbro property — G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013). 2020 will be a Hasbro year, as the studio has set Micronauts to open seven months later on Oct. 16, 2020. The toy property follows a race of Alien warriors from an alternate dimension that's microscopic. Paramount also carved out a July 23, 2021 date for Dungeons & Dragons, based on the table top roll playing game, and set aside Oct. 1, 2021 for an untitled Hasbro event film.

In 2015, THR broke the news that Paramount and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures were building a shared universe based on five Hasbro concepts — G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionaries, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and ROM, assembling a writers room to hammer out the details. The two G.I. Joe films earned a combined $678.2 worldwide.

The studio has had big commercial success with its Transformers series, which has earned $4.3 billion worldwide. Its latest installment, Transformers: The Last Knight, opened this year and 605.4 million worldwide, the lowest of the filve films. Paramount has the spinoff Bumblebee due out Dec. 21, 2018.

As for Dungeons & Dragons, Jeremy Irons appeared in an ill-fated 2000 adaptation for New Line. More recently, property became embroiled in a legal battle over who had the rights to make a film based on it, with a 2015 settlement appearing to pave the way for Warner Bros. to move ahead with a long-gestating project. As recently as last year, Warners was developing a project, with Ansel Elgort in early talks to star, however, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the property is no longer with the studio.

CLOVERFIELD MOVIE Release Pushed Back from February 2018 to April 20, 2018

oU7R1cA.jpg

The new Cloverfield sequel, tentatively titled God Particle, was set to hit theaters next month, February 2018, but now it looks like the next entry in the secretive Cloverfield franchise will be arriving in April 2018.

The Untitled Cloverfield Movie, which for a while was going under the name God Particle, has had its release date pushed yet again. The film, set to follow the surprise semi-sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane, was initially announced for a February 24, 2017, release date. The production reportedly went through some reshoots supervised by producer JJ Abrams, and that date moved to October 17, 2017. Then the date moved yet again, to February 2, 2018. With February fast approaching, it seemed slightly strange that there had been no real marketing for the film released yet, and now we know why: it’s been pushed back one more time.

Now, Paramount has confirmed that the Untitled Cloverfield Movie will find its way to theaters on April 20, 2018. The decision to move the movie’s release yet again was made very recently, likely during the holidays.

The film, which boasts a phenomenal cast that includes Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi, marks the feature directorial debut of Julius Onah. The original plot, back when the movie was known as God Particle, focused on a team of astronauts aboard an international space station who find themselves alone after a scientific experiment involving a particle accelerator makes the entire Earth vanish. Since then, however, the film has possibly undergone some changes.

Much like the first Cloverfield sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, God Particle did not originate as part of the Cloverfield universe. In fact, Oren Uziel, the film’s screenwriter, confirmed to Collider that the script was actually written before 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Paramount Moves Untitled Cloverfield Movie Release Date from February 2, 2018 to April 20 2018

BRIGHT Sequel Officially a Go with Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, David Ayer Returning

Lh6jjvu.jpg

Netflix has taken a shine to Bright, the streamer's fantasy cop drama that debuted this December. The streaming giant has greenlighted a sequel that is expected to reunite stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, along with director David Ayer.

Bright takes place in a fictional Los Angeles filled with fairies, elves and magic wands while acting as an allegory for real-world race relations. It follows a veteran cop (Smith) who reluctantly takes on a new partner, an Orc played by Edgerton, and has to protect a magical wand from law enforcement, criminals and an array of supernatural characters.

Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless are also returning as producers.

One key player who will not be returning for round two is writer Max Landis, who was paid a reported $3 million to $4 million for his screenplay in 2016 when the project ignited a bidding war before ultimately selling to Netflix.

Ayer will be taking over scripting duties. The director commonly takes on both writer and director responsibilities on his features, including the WWII film Fury and the cop drama End of Watch.

Bright had a reported budget of $90 million, making it Netflix's first big foray into tentpole filmmaking. Rumors of a follow-up have been swirling since before the feature's Dec. 22 premiere, but the streamer was waiting to see how the movie performed with audiences to make anything official.

While the film was largely panned by critics, Bright is currently the No. 1 movie on Netflix in over 190 countries, and is being streamed more by international users than domestic.

According to Nielsen, an average of 11 million U.S. Netflix users streamed Bright during its first three days of release. And this is an underestimation, since Nielsen only tracks users who watched the film through a TV, not those who streamed on a computer or mobile device.

CaBBkXc.jpg

DeWanda Wise is on her way to the Marvel Universe. The actress, known for her work on the Spike Lee series She's Gotta Have It on Netflix, is joining Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel in a supporting role, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Brie Larson is starring as the Marvel superhero in the film. Jude Law will also star in the film, which is set in the 1990s and features Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Ben Mendelsohn is playing the film's villain. In the comics, Captain Marvel is the alter ego of Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who becomes a hero when her DNA is fused with an alien's after an accident.

Wise stars as Nola Darling on She's Gotta Have It, which began streaming in November. Wise was seen last year on the Fox event series Shots Fired.

Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script by Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman. Details of the plot have been kept under wraps. Captain Marvel is set to open March 8, 2019.

Walter Hamada Named New DC Films President After JUSTICE LEAGUE Fallout

wFnhLYy.png

Warner Bros. has found a new hero to spearhead the slate of movies based on the DC Entertainment characters.

Walter Hamada, one of the executives behind the massively successful The Conjuring horror movies made by Warner Bros.' New Line division, has been named president of DC-based film production.

The ascension takes place after the December departure of Jon Berg, Warner Bros.' co-president of production who was the studio's point man for its DC movies. Berg is now a partner at Vertigo, the production shingle run by producer Roy Lee.

Hamada will focus on Warners' slate of upcoming films based on superheroes and villains, as well as titles based on other characters and stories also licensed from DC. He will work closely with Geoff Johns, the president and chief creative officer of DC Entertainment who worked side-by-side with Berg, while also drawing resources from both Warners and New Line.

Hamada is part of the duo known as "Team Genre" within the New Line corridors. With cohort Dave Neustadter, Hamada has overseen the company's horror line, including the billion-dollar-grossing cinematic universe centered around the Conjuring movies. He and Neustadter also oversaw the horror phenomenon It, based on the Stephen King novel.

Hamada already has a close relationship with Toby Emmerich, Warners' president and chief content officer who previously headed New Line, and insiders say he impressed Emmerich with his overseeing of Shazam!, the lone DC cinematic universe movie with which the division finds itself involved. (The movie is due to begin production this winter.)

"Walter is creative, resourceful and committed to excellence and will bring those qualities to his oversight of our superhero films," said Emmerich in a statement. "He's a terrific production executive and served as an executive producer on two of the summer's most popular films, New Line's It and Annabelle: Creation. I'm confident Walter and Geoff, working with our filmmaking partners, will deliver films that will resonate with both broad global audiences as well as DC fanboys and fangirls. Walter's a great addition to the Warner Bros. Pictures team, and I look forward to working with him in his new post."

Hamada's move comes at a precipitous moment for the studio's DC initiative. While Wonder Woman resonated with audiences and critics, becoming a cultural phenomenon while grossing $821.8 million worldwide, the movie that was to have been a hero-gathering zenith, Justice League, fizzled. The latter, while grossing $651 million worldwide, did not leave audiences wanting more.

Warners finds itself at a crossroads as to where it should spend its development energies next while the coming year will only bring one DC movie to theaters: Aquaman, directed by Conjuring helmer James Wan and due to open Dec. 21.
