How would you handle going back to the pre-Internet, pre-television days of radio?

What do you mean exactly?

Drop me in 1920 and I'll get along just fine without the internet. I don't think it would be too hard to adapt.

If I had to instead abstain from the internet in 2018, life would be a lot more difficult. Everyone else would still be using it, so you would be forced to live a restricted life. There are so many services now that are internet exclusive.

Well radio today isn't what it was in it's heyday. It no longer serves as an all-purpose source of entertainment. Good luck finding a radio drama on the airwaves today, for instance.

But more importantly, you were just suddenly thrust into a situation where all the usual shit you depend on was gone. What if instead you were thrust into a situation where society was already acclimated to not having TV or the Internet? Do you not think that you could successfully adjust?
I'm sure I could adjust....I'm almost 50 so I've already been there once. Not so easy for younger people, though.

I'd probably get attacked by a police dog or cop with a fire hose. That kinda thing happened when it was just radio, I think.

Well in this scenario I'm not sure if it's 1920 again or 2018, but whatever happens, all of society is with you. You're not alone in this.

I'm a simple girl, so when asking myself a question like this, I tend to boil it down to: I wonder if I liked it better when you had to go to the recordstore to buy new music, or if I prefer being able to find almost anything on Spotify (and the likes).

Never found a definitive answer.

I’d be more productive, that’s for sure. My power got knocked out last weekend from all the wind,(from Friday midday till Sunday morning) and I actually got some house work done instead of screwing around online or watching tv.

Yeah, then it would be easy.

Growing up and getting up to all kinds of wild shit before smart phones was the best. Now you can't fuck a girl at a party without 20 people pulling out a smart phone with a hd camera and video recorder lol. There are a lot of pros for non-tech and humans are very adaptable.

Fook doing that although everyone would start to appreciate the little things in life a lot more

Agreed on the pros for non-tech. Before all this shit the government and corporations were limited in the ways they could spy on you, and like you say not everyone had a camera in their pocket which they were ready to whip out during every embarrassing moment.

Yes, life felt "smaller" in a lot of ways before the Internet because there wasn't this sense that everything is connected, and no doubt even smaller before television, but I don't think that's a bad thing. We are overloaded today.

Too hard to go back like that, knowing what we now know.

There was an island-wide power outage here a few years ago and all we had was a battery-powered radio. It sucked much more than I thought it would, and we were on a boat for another island within a week.

Was that during the great storm Haian?

I listen to talk radio all the time, so it wouldn't be an issue. The whole lack of porn thing would really fuck me up though. Not sure the Sears lingerie section would get the job done.

Lingerie back in the 50s sucked.

Granny panties shit I aint wearing those!

Yeah...Haiyan/Yolanda. No electricity for 7 weeks. Like the thread suggests, I thought it might be a chance to get back to a more basic lifestyle, and relate better to nature and other people. We're just too dependent on our gadgets these days.

7 weeks jesus christ I would have gone insane!

Longest we have without power was like 9 days in Manila after a super Typhoon in 1995 or 1996. Ice cream are being sold dirt cheap you can get 4 one gallon containers for the price of one!

if there was no tv or internet i would invent it and become rich.

I can live without the the TV and Radio as long as there's the internet.

Communication without the internet is really hard in today's generation.

I wonder this, actually. I'm not convinced that all the technology we have today is a good thing.

It seems to me that life was a lot more about "community" back in the first half of the 20th century than it is today, as our technology has made it easier and easier to just sit at home and be comfortable. Back in the day it seems like you pretty much had to go out and be social if you wanted some excitement in your life, especially if you were single.

I think technology is a great thing but it gets dumbed down because most companies just use it to make money - ie turning everyone into smart phone zombies.

Before the Internet, there was television. And before television, there was radio.

How do you think you'd handle it if you had to go back to that bygone era, when radio was the most advanced mass communication device to be found inside a home and a fun night indoors was the family gathered around the radio listening to the latest episode of The Shadow?

For news and entertainment there's the radio, newspapers and books, or if you want to go out then there are movie theaters. No Internet. No TV sitting in the living room. No smartphones.

Could you handle it or no?
