GLASS Footage Description from CinemaCon; First Look at the Cast in New Banner

Dbpa8UiVAAAYHjF.jpg:orig

Director M. Night Shyamalan gave fans a treat at CinemaCon with the first official image and plot details for the next film in his grounded superhero series. The first image of Glass shows the titular character played by Samuel L. Jackson, flanked by James McAvoy as the Beast and Bruce Willis as David Dunn. The movie will serve as a sequel to both Unbreakable and Split, putting the two main characters from those films on a collision course.

"In Spilt, I created the origin story for an anarchist that could be good or could be bad," Shyamalan said. "The worlds of Unbreakable and Split finally collide in Glass."

"What if these real life superheroes and supervillains are somehow locked up together?" Sarah Paulson asked. "What could go wrong?"

Shamylan called it, "the first truly grounded comic book movie."

The director then revealed footage of the movie to the CinemaCon audience:

"It's amazing to meet you, it is simply extraordinary," a woman says. She is Doctor Ellie Staple. Her work surrounds a specific type of a delusion of grandeur. She specializes in those individuals who believe they are superheroes. Kevin Crumb, Glass, and Dunn are watching her skeptically. Glass looks down at a comic. David Dunn is seen on the train years ago. He has a vision when he touches people and believes he's a super hero. Crumb's many personalities come out. He has cheerleaders captive and promises the Beast is coming.

Glass rules, "And yet it is true. My bones break easily, I have 94 breaks in my life." The doctor, however, points out how smart he is. Glass points out they don't die with bullets and can bend steel. Comics flash by. A comic book store. Glass wants to meet the Beast, and he thinks the bad guys are teaming up within him. The Beast throws someone, runs through a field, and roars. "First name, Mister," Glass says. "Last name, Glass."

Glass premieres on January 18, 2019.

Sequel to Horror Hit A QUIET PLACE Announced by Paramount at CinemaCon

b9gz7qt.jpg

Paramount is moving ahead with a sequel to A Quiet Place, the hit horror film that has earned more than $213 million at the worldwide box office, including $134.8 million in North America.

Studio chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos announced the news at CinemaCon on Wednesday afternoon as the studio presented its slate of films to theater owners gathered in Las Vegas for their annual convention.

A Quiet Place was a much-needed success for the studio, which has endured a tough run at the box office for more than a year. It is the first film that went into production after Gianopulos — who formerly ran Fox — arrived at Paramount.

John Krasinski directed the high-concept thriller from a script by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, who have said when asked about a sequel that they have plenty of material left over.

"If you told me five years ago that an almost silent film starring the very funny guy Jim from The Office would have been a hit at Paramount, I would have said, 'Well, I should go work at Paramount,' " Gianopulos told the crowd.

In addition to directing, Krasinski stars in the film opposite Emily Blunt, his real-life wife. They play the married parents of two small children who must remain absolutely silent if they are to avoid being attacked by creatures attracted by noise.

A Quiet Place cost $17 million to produce, meaning it will be hugely profitable. The film has defied expectations its box-office performance, even overtaking the big-budget Dwayne Johnson pic Rampage last weekend to come in No. 1 in its third weekend (it opened at No. 1, while coming in No. 2 behind Rampage in its second outing).

Vin Diesel is now the proud co-owner of the xXx franchise. Diesel and his One Race Films has teamed up with finance and production company The H Collective to acquire the rights to the action adventure franchise from Revolution Studios, the two companies announced Tuesday.

At the same time, Diesel and H Collective are suiting up to make a new installment, xXx 4. The aim is to begin production December 2018.

D.J. Caruso, who helmed xXx: Return of Xander Cage, as well as movies such as Disturbia, will return to direct xXx 4 with Diesel reprising his role as extreme sports athlete-turned-reluctant agent Xander Cage.

This isn’t the only franchise that Diesel owns. The actor-producer also own the rights to Riddick/Pitch Black, which he acquired from Universal, who wanted him to return to the Fast & Furious movie series.

H Collective will finance xXx 4 alongside investment partners including Sparkle Roll Media, HCH Media, Dadi Cinema, and Angeleno Studio. Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce with Diesel and Samantha Vincent for One Race Films and The H Collective.

In a statement, H Collective CEO Nic Crawley said: “During my time at Paramount I was lucky to be involved in the development and distribution of xXx: Return of Xander Cage. The response from the Chinese box office was unprecedented. Bringing the next installment of the xXx franchise to The H Collective complements our diversified slate and mission to produce content for a global audience.”

S.J. Clarkson to Direct STAR TREK 4, Becomes First Female Director in Franchise History

f62xv9S.jpg

S.J. Clarkson has been tapped to direct Star Trek 4 making her the first female to helm a film in the Star Trek franchise.

Paramount Pictures had no comment. The studio announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that it was planning a fourth movie with Chris Hemsworth, who appeared as Chris Pine’s father in 2009’s Star Trek. Zachary Quinto is also set to return. Paramount is developing another Star Trek film from J.J. Abrams and Quentin Tarantino, but sources say it is still being written and would come after the fourth movie.

While details on Star Trek 4 are vague, sources say a key plot point sees Pine’s character running into his father (Hemsworth) in a time travel ploy.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay penned the screenplay. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions, while David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance Media will executive produce.

The original 2009 reboot Star Trek earned $385 million worldwide, while its sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness made $467 million globally in 2013. The third, Star Trek Beyond, brought in $343 million worldwide in 2016.

Clarkson is best known for her work on the TV scene with shows such as Dexter, Bates Motel, Orange is the New Black, and Jessica Jones. She recently directed a handful of episodes for Marvel’s The Defenders.

We're being punished.

Not unless you watch it.

I've seen the first movie, and enjoyed it.

The 2nd movie? A few clips - it looks like complete shit.

Recent new movie? Watched the trailer, and nothing else.

Won't give the next movie the time of day.

Everyone, stop paying to see stupid movies. They're made for stupid people, and by paying to see them you're admitting to Hollywood you're stupid.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Shatters Box Office Record with $258.2 Million U.S. Weekend and $640.9 Million Worldwide Bow

ocJTMB2.gif

Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War kicked off the summer box office in high style over the weekend, opening to a record-setting $258.2 million in North America and $382.7 million overseas for a global total of $640.9 million, the top worldwide debut of all time, according to final numbers. The superhero mashup accomplished the feat without China, where it doesn't unfurl until May 11.

Final numbers released Monday were up from Sunday's estimates, which showed Infinity War debuting to $250 million domestically and $630 million internationally.

Fellow Disney title Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million) was the previous record-holder for biggest domestic bow, while Universal's The Fate of the Furious had held the record for biggest global start ($541.9 million).

Infinity War's box-office victory was aided by the biggest Saturday of all time in North America ($83 million), as well as the biggest Sunday ($69 million), reflecting powerful word of mouth. The tentpole cost close to $300 million to produce before a major marketing spend.

Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Infinity War is the most ambitious amassing of superheroes ever on the big screen and comes as Marvel Studios — led by Kevin Feige — celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2009, Walt Disney Co. chief Bob Iger paid $4 billion to acquire Marvel Entertainment, even though many of the superhero characters in Marvel's stable were unproven.

"Marvel spent 10 years methodically and carefully creating a universe of characters, worlds and stories that all led to this and, in doing so, created an event unlike anything the business has ever seen," said Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis as he prepares to exit the top post and turn his job over to studio veteran Cathleen Taff.

"We have been sitting here all weekend in astonishment," added Taff.

Infinity War is the first film to be shot entirely with Imax cameras. Imax theaters in turn delivered $41 million of the total worldwide gross, the biggest showing ever for a Marvel title. The U.S. share was $22.5 million.

Marvel Studios is unrivaled in its success, now boasting six of the top 10 opening weekends of all time. The Avengers ($207.4 million) previously held the mark for the biggest superhero launch, followed by Black Panther($202 million). They are the only other superhero titles to have crossed $200 million in their first weekend.

Infinity War also continues Disney's domination at the box office. The studio has bragging rights to nine of the 10 biggest domestic openings, including the top three; Infinity War, Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi($220 million). Universal's Jurassic World ($208.8 million) is No. 4.

As in North America, Infinity War set a slew of industry records overseas, including staking out the second-best international opening all time. Fate of the Furious still reigns as the top international opening with $443.2 million, thanks to a hefty $185 million day-and-day debut in China. Without China, Fate of the Furious' international start would have been roughly $258 million.

John Cena, Dwayne Johnson Team for Robert Ludum's THE JANSON DIRECTIVE

Sma7nq2.jpg

Dwayne Johnson is teaming with Hollywood's other wrestler-turned-actor, John Cena, for the action thriller The Janson Directive.

Cena is in talks to star in the Universal project based on the best-selling novel byJason Bourne author Robert Ludlum. He would play Paul Janson, a former Navy SEAL who now works as a corporate security consultant. Janson becomes a target himself when a rescue operation goes horribly wrong.

James Vanderbilt (White House Down) will adapt the movie from a story co-authored with Akiva Goldsman.

Johnson, who made the casting announcement Monday on his social media outlets, was originally set to topline the project, but his incredibly busy schedule — which includes the upcoming feature Skyscraper and a sequel to Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — kept him from starring in the movie. He will now serve as an executive producer alongside Seven Bucks' Dany Garcia and Tracey Nyberg of Mythology.

Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner of Captivate Entertainment will produce, along with Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Vanderbilt, Brad Fischer and William Sherak of Mythology and Goldsman for his Weed Road Pictures.

Cena, who is repped by ICM, is in theaters now with the Universal comedy Blockers and will next be seen in Paramount's Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.

John Woo and Universal Pictures are teaming on a new version of his 1989 Hong King crime classic The Killer. It is intended as a star vehicle for Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o. She is negotiating to play the assassin, a role originated by Chow Yun-fat. The studio has the film on a fast track, with Woo directing.

Producing alongside Woo and his A Better Tomorrow Films is eOne’s Mark Gordon and Lori Tilkin. Matt Jackson, Lori Tilkin and Luc Etienne are exec producing with Terence Chang. eOne’s Josh Clay Phillips will also have a producing role and is overseeing the project with Tilkin. The aim is to begin production later this year in France and Germany.

Nyong’o won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years A Slave, followed with two Star Wars films, and she just co-starred in Black Panther. In The Killer, she will play the assassin who puts her own life on the line to save a woman whom she accidentally blinded in her last hit.

The film is a touchstone picture, one widely emulated for its balletic, stylized violent scenes. The redo will blend espionage with extraordinary stunts to capture the feel of the original. Universal VP Production Sara Scott will oversee for the studio.
