JRE MMA Show #26 with Big John McCarthy

Not getting any love at all. Really good show and solid perspectives on mma from big john.

@ 19:19 (in the audio podcast version) he disses fellow sherdogger @johnperetti (sp.?) saying that he did not invent the term mma in 1983 or atletas y it didn’t catch on then.

I wonder what John has to say about this?

The term "mixed martial arts" has been around for a lot longer than since the early 90's. Was used during the Ali-Inoki buildup in 1976 or thereabouts. We'll probably never know exactly when it was first uttered, but as John says, that's not really important.

Blatnik is the one who established it as the codification for the sport the UFC was trying to grow, and the rest is history.

They talked about how stupid it is - 12 to six elbows being illegal - but really they don’t take into account that some people have small and very point elbows that are capable of caving in someone’s soft spot on their skull with the help of gravity

Good podcast. Always fun hearing stories about the old days.

John has a great memory.
