Army is a tremendous upkeep for a country with average and below average economy.

Lets take Italy.

Why would you need an army in Italy for? Who gonna raid them? Some can argue that if not for war/defence purposes it could be even for riots in a country.

Wouldn't be cheaper for each country like that to just maintain few nuclear warheads just to scare off potential outside danger. And from 30% money saved spend on reinforcing Police?

They are required as a condition of being in NATO.

And Italy isnt a nuclear armed country.

There are a lot of people that consider the parts of Tyrol that are in Italy to be German lands and should be part of a German nation. They have a solid argument as well. Because the people speak German and it was part of the Habsburg empire and only stolen from Austria after WW1.
If the EU project would break down Italy better have an Army to defend it because they will want that territory back.

Also if you were Italy. Would you really rely on your nuclear missile to actually work?

To make Johnny Foreigner behave himself be that in West Africa the South Atlantic or where ever else he might get ideas above his station .

Some countries, such as Iceland, buy this logic and don't have a standing regular army. They are a country of 300,000 people though, and they are an island.

If you are a country with borders, it makes sense to have a standing military. Otherwise, you are literally relying on your neighbors to not invade you, and that tends to not work out so well. Just because you can't hang with the heavyweights of the world doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to defend yourself at all.

Stuff like NATO requires them to be able to contribute troops as well.

Well, you never know...

Oh and for Ze Germanz of course.....they have been quiet for to long they must be planing something really big this time .

I think small countries should just train in Guerrilla warfare and their every citizen should be trained in it and should own a gun. It will be cheaper and more effective.

Despite the US doing a lot (most) of the heavy lifting, they do actually have help from smaller nations. Hell at one point Denmark had the highest death toll pr capita in Afghanistan because they were one of the very few countries who were not to pussified to be in Helmand. Did a lot of ugly shit there and lost a lot of soldiers.

Feels like this is another russian trollbot trying to relax europeans guard down
The old putin hybrid warfare to compensate for an actualy unimpresssive military ,i expect if italy did stand down its army it would suddenly have an agitated 'native rus ' population in need of 'defending'

Something comparable to Switzerland. Seems to have worked out for them, for the past 200 years.

The point of having an army, as a small country, is to make the prospect of conquering your already unwanted territory, even more undesirable (which would be further enhanced by a well-armed guerilla army).

There are plenty of historical and even relatively recent examples, of big countries invading small countries, under the impression that it was going to be a "cakewalk". On several occasions, the "superpowers" were turned back by a dedicated resistance.

Inside every german theres that little voice saying.....third times the charm!

Yep a Leopard doesn't change it's spots the villainous Hun will will try again , they are well overdue I'm expecting Mecha-Hitler to laser his way out of Antartica any day now .

Its ironic isn't? That Italy the land that once was home of the greatest army in Europe if not the world (Rome Empire) is now just like any other country to the point it is now debatable if they should have an Army.

Ceasar must be proud!

To be fair Germany is 1:1 with Russia in recent wars.
Russia already surrenders in WW1 and needed all the help they can get in WW2.

Germany should be considered the heavy favorite in a trilogy.

That is not being fair at all thought. Soviets fought Axis alone for like 2-3 years, and in WW1 it was not really Germany that have beaten Russia. Also one cant really compare Brest-Litovsk treaty (that was signed with Bolsheviks and not Russians) with total unconditional surrender of Germany in 1945.

I dont consider Germany to be favorite at all in the trilogy. Specially if its the Germany who will try to invade Russia again.

Germany actually got terrible war record. Germany lost every War, and the only war where Germany won was against rebels, but even then Germany lost to Polaks in 1919.

So anytime anywhere Fritz :)

Germany already had too many fronts in WW2. If it weren't for the war in the west, Africa, the UK and American support. Germany would have blitzed the Russian because of the state of disarray the Red Army was in 1940.
Germany would have attacked a year earlier and also earlier in the year. If they could have hold Russia might be a different question but they would have defeated Russia militarily if it weren't for too many enemies.

Same with WW1. If Germany didn't fight on two fronts at the same time. They would have crushed the Russians even worse. Also because the Russian Army had some serious issues in their command structure.
It is very difficult to beat the Germans on a battlefield. Unless you have a significant advantage in numbers and resources you are going to lose.

So yeah if it's 1 on1 you are going down Ivan :).
