Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v6: My Power Supply Burned Down My House

Editing tasks and proffesional softwares are my main concerns.

And budget minded as well, as long as they perform decently for what I’m doing.

I’ve been comparing cpu’s In the 200ish price point on Newegg and trying to decide what’s the best option there, if there is one that can handle what I need.

Things like running full color correction on 4K video, while running other editing tasks at the same time.
Aha, well, since this is the case, if your budget can squeeze it, I would suggest the R7-1700 or R7-1700X are the ideal value for you right now.

Frankly, the sales right now are kind of crazy. This past month has been the best time to buy all year, and now is even better-- especially on CPUs. I strongly suspect this is going to the best buyer's window all year. It's only because of Crypto's bizarre effect on the marketplace that I don't think we've really seen them start to march prices up like they normally already have started at this point in the leadup to Black Friday so that all the "sales" on that day actually aren't the best prices seen for the year (or even the quarter).

CPU sales are just stacked

On top of that there's the Cryorig H7 for $27 straight up (this is the king of budget CPU coolers right now) and there's that Google Express 25% off sale for up to $100 on any purchase for new customers. The past two months Google has been pushing that hard to help the service gain market penetration, but they cut off the cap at $25 in April, and $30 in June.

You are one lucky SOB to come around asking about buying computers at this moment in time.

Because of what you just posted I might upgrade my CPU and Mobo this week lol.

Those are some good deals, I’m not familiar with that gpu as that’s one I haven’t researched or seen mentioned at all yet, it again lucky about the timing, my local area is absolutely loaded with people trying to offload their failed mining attempt gpu’s like 1070’s for 2-250 and 1080’s for 350-4 depending on brands of course.

I’ve been considering these processors.
The 5 2600x for 219 or the non x for 179

The 7 1800x for 240

And some others I can’t remember off the top of my head

@Madmick as 90 50 said above, used mining GPU's they would be cactus wouldn't they? a 1080 for 350 would be a monster deal over here but I'm assuming that a GPU that has been used for mining would be close to a wreck.

Many are new in box that never even got put to use, people went out and bought a dozen 1070’s and 1080’s to replace 1050’s with etc and it bitcoin has taken a dump and they never got them put in and are trying to offload and recoup some quick cash probably to pay on their cc with some and possibly thier electric bill lol.

Miners usually undervolt their cards to save electricity. I mined for awhile years ago, then Bitcoin crashed and I used my GPUs to build several gaming rigs. I never had any problems with those GPUs.

I think this is possibly where all the “budget new build “ gaming rigs are coming from locally too.

Instead of outright selling their gpu’s they are piecing together rigs to sell. There are a bunch of people advertising they are selling budget builds (with specs laid out) pretty cheaply and say they will upgrade stuff for more cost.

Like they had a bunch of old gpu’s they were minig with and are building “ gaming “ rigs with them to sell in the abundance of gpu only sales adds

Like this one for example,

I’m actually curious if it would be a good starting point to save some cash

Yes, avoid mining-dumped GPUs like the plague. Avoid used GPUs right now, IMO.

Reports of shredded GPUs abound. XFX literally ended their lifetime warranty policy for GPUs due to cryptominer RMA claims. That's what a lot of these miners were doing to the cards. I don't think XFX was the only one, either.

No, avoid.

looks like my HD is dead too.....

Damn, i think my hd also is dead to.....

but im not sure....i think its still ok.

No weird clicking but its just spinning up and down.

might be a power issue, i wanted to test it on my friends laptop, but its his shit is so old i dont even know... lmao

But you know about computers, A lot of miners don't know a damn thing and just bought whatever and run it at stock. Before they realised unless they had an entire factory it was pointless mining with a solo pc.

You know, i just realize i think its because i tryed to get this thing to work on a 2.0 usb power on a 2010 pavilion G7.....

As for the Ryzen 7 1800x, you can get the Ryzen 7 1700 and save some cash. All the first gen Ryzen cpu’s hit a 4ghz wall. The 1700 will over clock just as high as the 1800x. You also don’t get a cpu cooler with the 1800x, you get the Wraith Spire cpu cooler with 1700.
As an example, I posted my Ryzen 1700 overclock results above. If I took that 1700 out and replaced it with the 1800x, I would have got the exact same results. Save yourself some cash and get the 1700 instead of the 1800x.

As for the Ryzen 5 2600 vs 2600x, they both overclock to damn near the same levels. The 2600 comes with the smaller Wraith Stealth (left) cpu cooler while the 2600x comes with the bigger Wraith Spire (right)

If you decide to go with the second gen 2600 series, personally I’d buy the 2600 and take the $30 savings and buy that Cryorig H7 cooler @Madmick mentioned earlier. You’ll have the same amount of money invested as the 2600x, but you’ll have a better cpu cooler which will allow you to overclock a little higher.

Ryzen processors benefit greatly from higher speed Ram.
This is a longer video, but well worth the watch.

Thanks some good info there, I looked for your 1700 test results but didn’t see them, am I blind or did you for get to post it when you were done typing?

Ah gotcha i saw that, I don’t know why I was looking for an1700 vs something else numbers instead of just the 1700 numbers.

On your system build like why 2 different 500g sdd that are so wildly apart in price, the Samsung is double what the WD is?

The Samsung is an NVME drive and the WD is sata based.
