Sony Pictures Developing SILK for Their Spider-Man Universe

Tvssepj.jpg

Sony is developing Silk, from Sony’s universe of Marvel-licensed characters about Korean-American heroine Cindy Moon, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap. Amy Pascal is producing.

Silk first appeared in April 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #1 and was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.

According to Marvel Wiki, when high school student Cindy Moon was attending a public exhibition demonstrating the safe handling of nuclear laboratory waste materials, sponsored by the General Techtronics Corporation, a spider irradiated by a particle accelerator used in the demonstration bit Peter Parker on the hand and fell from his hand. The spider then bit Cindy in her ankle before dying. Cindy’s story was revealed to Peter Parker 13 years later, when he was the hero known as Spider-Man.

Silk would be a part of Sony’s universe of Marvel-licensed characters along with other Marvel Comics properties such as Venom, Silver and Black, Nightwatch, and Morbius the Living Vampire.

Spike Lee is eyeing Nightwatch as a possible directing vehicle, TheWrap has confirmed.

In terms of other Spider-Man projects at the studio, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens on Dec. 14 and Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star as the Marvel villain Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Jared Leto to Star in Sony Spider-Man Title MORBIUS with Daniel Espinosa to Direct

OJhwfUW.jpg

Jared Leto, who played The Joker in Suicide Squad, is looking to add another comic book character to his resume. The Oscar-winning actor has signed on to star in Morbius, Sony’s latest entry into its Marvel-based, Spider-Man-centric universe of characters.

Daniel Espinosa, the Scandanavian filmmaker who helmed Safe House and last year's sci-fi thriller Life, will direct the feature project that has a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo who created Netflix’s Lost in Space remake. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.

The project is based on antihero Morbius the Living Vampire. Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right and even headlined his own comic book titles.

Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in 1971's Amazing Spider-Man No. 101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.

While Leto has in the past chosen projects that had indie sensibilities, winning an Oscar for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, in recent years he has been targeting roles in tentpole or franchise projects. In addition to playing the popular DC villain in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Leto played a sinister character in Blade Runner 2049 and is attached to a sequel to Tron.

Miles Teller Cast as Goose's Son in Tom Cruise's TOP GUN: MAVERICK

7eFAwcc.jpg

Miles Teller has nabbed the role of Goose’s son in Top Gun 2. Teller will star opposite Tom Cruise in the long-in-the works sequel that sees Cruise, reprising his role as the hot-shot pilot with the call sign Maverick.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in sci-fi thriller Oblivion, is directing the movie, which is also bringing back Val Kilmer's rival pilot code-named Iceman.

The role of Goose's son was a hot one as many of young Hollywood’s finest were chasing it, even traveling to Cruise’s home in Clearwater, Florida for the testing process.

Teller beat out Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell for the role. Dylan O'Brien and Austin Butler were among those in the mix in a previous stage.

Teller will now play the son of Maverick's wingman and best pal, Goose. Played by Anthony Edwards in the Tony Scott-directed original, the character provided an emotional spine to the movie when he is killed by accident and Maverick blames himself.

Teller last starred in the pair of gritty dramas, Thank You for Your Service, and Only the Brave, the true-life firefighting movie that Kosinski directed. The Spectacular Now and Whiplash helped establish his chops early on.

Say what you will about JJ Abrams, but the dude is loyal to his friends...

Keri Russell is headed to a galaxy far, far away.

Sources tell Variety that the “Felicity” alum is in early talks to join J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which Abrams is writing and directing. Russell and Abrams last collaborated on 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III.”

The role calls for action-heavy fight scenes. Russell has shown her ability to perform tough stunts in projects like FX’s “The Americans,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

Abrams and Lucasfilm execs met with several actresses for the role in the past two months and settled on Russell right before the Fourth of July holiday. Abrams will likely cast two more actors by the time the film begins production at the end of the month. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are all expected to return.

It’s unknown at this time whether Russell will be on the side of the rebels or the evil empire.

OK, so this gives me hope that Rachel Nichols might pop up in the movie. ;)

Keanu Reeves Confirms Third Movie Title is Called JOHN WICK 3: PARABELLUM

O0RxJUo.jpg

John Wick is going to war. If you saw how John Wick: Chapter 2 ended, you probably already knew that, but the official title for John Wick 3 wants you to know for sure. Speaking with the folks at ComingSoon, Keanu Reeves confirmed that the upcoming sequel is called John Wick 3: Parabellum.

So what does Parabellum refer to? Reeves told the outlet that the subtitle means “Prepare for war.” He explained, ” It’s part of that famous sentence, ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum,’ which translates as, ‘If you want peace, prepare for war.'” That sounds about right for a character like Wick, who just wanted to live the quiet life until some mobster punks stole his car and killed his dog, reawakening the Baba yaga and sending the legendary assassin on a quest for vengeance that got him tangled up in the criminal underworld all over again.

The 2017 sequel saw him tangled up even further, and ultimately expelled from the protection of the Hotel Continental after he killed a member of The High Table on Continental grounds. The third film finds Wick on the run after the deed, with a contract on his life. As the synopsis explains, “John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”

Parabellum will also see Wick teaming up with a mysterious new character called Sofia, played by Halle Berry. Reeves also teased Wick’s relationship to the here. “John Wick is fighting for his life and thinks that Halle Berry’s character has some information for him,” Reeves said. “They have a past, and they get involved with The High Table, this kind of overlording entity.”

John Wick 3 also stars Angelica Huston, Jason Mantzoukas,Billions breakout Asia Kate Dillon and Hiroyuki Sanada as the main villain, as well as Mark Dacascos, Tiger Hu Chen, and The Raid duo of Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, Common and Ruby Rose are expected to return for the sequel.

Billy Dee Williams to Return as Lando Calrissian in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

Billy Dee Williams is returning to a galaxy far, far away. The actor, who famously played the galactic gambler Lando Calrissian, will reprise the role for Star Wars: Episode IX, the next Star Wars installment from Lucasfilm.

Chatter about Williams joining the production, which begins later this summer, increased in recent days when the actor bowed out of an upcoming sci-fi and pop culture convention citing a conflict with a movie schedule. Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams will indeed be returning to the Star Wars big screen for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The character made his suave debut in Empire Strikes Back.

Williams has in recent years returned to the role that fuels his appearances on the convention circuit, voicing Calrissian in various cartoon series and video games.

The character is one of the more popular personages in the Star Wars universe and appeared in a major way in this year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Donald Glover slipped on the cape to play a younger Calrissian.

Episode IX is being directed by J.J. Abrams and will reunite Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, among others. Keri Russell is one of the new additions to the cast. The film opens Dec. 20, 2019.

Jeremy Renner Joins Jamie Foxx in Blumhouse Productions' SPAWN

Jeremy Renner is joining Jamie Foxx in Spawn, Blumhouse Productions' adaptation of the Todd McFarlane comic book. McFarlane, who wrote and drew the comics, is making his directorial debut with the film project and also wrote the script.

Foxx is set to star as Al Simmons, a black-ops agent who is betrayed and murdered, with his soul sent to hell for all the innocents he killed. He makes a deal with a demon who allows him to return to Earth and see his wife, but in a cruel twist, five years have now passed and his wife has moved on. Simmons now roams the earth as a disfigured superpowered spawn of Hell who is trapped in the middle of a war between Heaven and Hell.

Renner will play Twitch, a good cop surrounded by corrupt officers who ends up working with Spawn. The character was a key player in the comic and even headlined his own comic.

A fall production start is being eyed.

Renner is coming off Tag, the ensemble comedy from New Line that also starred Ed Helms and Jon Hamm.

CAPTAIN MARVEL Actor Djimon Hounsou Cast as the Wizard in SHAZAM!

2yvpz2B.jpg

Djimon Hounsou was quietly cast to play the sorcerer who gives young Billy Batson his powers in DC’s Shazam! film coming next year, EW has exclusively learned.

Hounsou also played the Kree mercenary Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy as well as the upcoming Captain Marvel — so he’s pulling off the rare feat of having significant roles in both the Marvel and DC universe at the same time.

Previously, This Is Us actor Ron Cephas Jones was widely reported as likely getting the Shazam! role, but that didn’t end up happening due to a scheduling conflict.

Filming on Shazam! has actually wrapped, but this bit of casting remained under the radar until now. (Comic fans will bemusedly note that Hounsou’s upcoming Captain Marvel was also the original name of the Shazam! comic book before DC changed the name).

Hounsou rose to fame in major roles in films like Amistad and Gladiator, and was previously in another DC title — playing Papa Midnite in 2005’s Constantine.

Shazam! hits theaters April 5, 2019 and follows a 14-year-old (Angel Asher) who gains the power to turn into a grown-up superhero (Zachary Levi) by saying a magic word. In the comics, Honsou’s character is a 3,000 years old sorcerer from Ancient Egypt who uses his powers to fight evil and has been seeking a successor to carry on his mission. He passes his power to Billy who only needs to shout his name — SHAZAM — to instantly become a superhero with an array of powers.

JOKER Origin Movie Officially a Go at Warner Bros. with Joaquin Phoenix to Star

joaquin-phoenix-joker-interesting-913.jpg

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros. Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting is set to begin in September in New York.

Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

Warners has yet to stake out a release date for the film, which goes against the grain of most comic book movies that have flags planted years in advance. But the Joker stand-alone pic is meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies.

The project's budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the stand-alone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

That said, there is a chance that the movie could be ready for release as early as late 2019, depending on various factors.

Warners has a possible second Joker movie in the works as Jared Leto, who played the character in Suicide Squad, now has his own solo film project in development.

Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street) is producer on the Joker origin stand-alone, while Richard Baratta is an executive producer.

Phoenix, who won a best actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for Lynne Ramsey’s You Were Never Really Here, next stars in Gus Van Sant's Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot, which opens Friday.

First Official Image of Zachary Levi in Costume in SHAZAM!; New Plot Details Revealed

image

Ready for an official first look at Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan in DC’s Shazam! movie? There have been a few leaked spectator photos from the Toronto set, but above is EW.com’s exclusive first image from the actual film that comes out next year.

Here we see orphaned 14-year-old Billy Batson, who can transform into a grown-up superhero (Levi, who starred on NBC’s Chuck) with an array of powers by saying the magic word. Billy is shown on a soda run with fellow orphan Freddy Feeman (Jack Dylan Grazer, who played the hypochondriac Eddie in It).

To re-design the iconic superhero costume for the big screen, director David Sandberg (Lights Out) took elements from throughout the character’s appearances in comics and animated shows.

“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman,” the director tells EW. “It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.” Yet Shazam also has a hood from DC’s 2011 “New 52” relaunch, a glowing lightning bolt that can appear across his chest and wears the gold gauntlets from one of Shazam’s animated movie appearances.

Levi’s muscular look in the film has been a point of online fandom curiosity. The actor seriously bulked up in the gym to play the role, though like many who have portrayed superheroes in the past also had a bit of help from the suit itself. “I don’t know if [the suit is] crazy big if you look at some of the others — look at Batman,” Sandberg notes.

In the film, Billy (whose younger version is played by Disney Channel star Asher Angel) is assigned to a new foster home where he befriends comic book superfan Freddy. One day, Billy’s subway ride is interrupted by a mysterious Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) whose been searching for ages to find the right successor to inherit his powers. He reveals the teen’s been selected to gain an assortment of abilities, and all it takes is for Billy to say “SHAZAM!”

Shazam! is released April 5, 2019, and represents an entry in an unofficial second stage of DC universe films that includes Aquaman coming Dec. 21.
