Does anyone here feel like the original UFC was much more real?

Anyone remember the first time it actually looked like someone did die in the ring? I think it was when Tank beat Nelmark. I imagine ringside the view was devastating because Nelmark’s body dropped like a sack of potatoes.

Oh and this.

From what I recall..Tank beat John Mutua, the islander martial artists who looked paralyzed then Tank knocked out Steve Jennum, who folded into a strange position. In the early days of UFC, Tank would be the guy I'd least likely like to face off against.

I wish fighters knew less about their opponents. I know it's not actually feasible but in the early days fighters would work towards implementing their strengths vs now a days where fighters focus on exploiting opponent's weaknesses

I had heard about it one way or another in 1994, and came across a UFC 2 tape at Hollywood Video. Had no idea what to expect. The commentary was awful, the production was basic, but the fights were compelling and the whole thing was very entertaining.

Kept watching the rental tapes until they disappeared around 2000? Picked it up again in 2011 when my son got interested. Like it now, but it was awesome in the early years.

I remember watching this fight live on a black box fucking blew my mind

Your evidence of effectiveness is what exactly?
I feel bad about my post in this thread because that lunatic liked it. I like good trolling, but I think he’s seriously saying that old school karate masters were superior fighters to these millennial sissies, basically

Dood what are you really wanting to tell me? Really!

The conception of Martial Arts was primarily for military purposes fights to the death in the protection of national borders and shipping ports.

Then in ancient orient times it was to prove yourself to the death in public challenges that were held you could void the death match by pulling out and surrendering.

But it was no rules barred, they were trained killers in what is known as the "The Killing Arts" usually high ranked master's would sign "Death Waivers"!

Its no joke, they would have ripped out a persons jugular, bite marks, poked out eye balls, various broken bones, dislocations due to heavy vital strike points and joint locks, and broken arteries due to pressure point strikes and ripped out hair, damaged internal organs, just to name a few due to the hard training they did back then making their bodies like "IRON BARS"!

Also around about the 16th century the Asian governments banned these practices and changed their traditional language to modern Chinese/Japanese to do away with their barbaric past!

Hence the term and meaning of "New World Order" the formation of the banking and trade system between nations was born adding western modern military weapons machine guns and cannons, doing away with hand to hand combat as a military force.

Ancient or Traditional Martial Arts training is illegal to even consider in modern sport combat fighting tactics of course but I'm driving a point if you understand the approach to what really is "Martial Arts Training" even as a hobby in today's modern world as well.

There are masters that are still teaching deadly martial arts in remote parts of the world but you have to agree to the terms and conditions and you will be tested first on your "WILL" to continue past basic training.

Its really hard on the body but harder mentally, as the mind blocks the body.

But anyway I get your point!

There are a few people that are mentally ill thinking they can get away with this in the modern scientific world.........Its certain...............

The early events barely had any rules. These days many fighters are like athletes and know how to play the rules which makes the fights feel less real.

Yes, not to mention the damn refs today are biased and shady AF (e.g. Herb Dean and Dan Mirgliotta) and affect the fights by breaking up fighters or letting them get away with the rules.

No I don’t understand. The people training in remote areas these deadly techniques would likely get embarrassed in a fight with a trained fighter.

Even ancient military training wasn’t solely focused on individual hand to hand no weapons combat. Which is what fighters train every day.

I assume there are some effective techniques that don’t get practiced because practicing them would be dangerous. But just the fact that they can’t be practiced against a live person trying to defend will make it less effective. Most techniques like that (groin, eye, throat) fighters are best trained to implement in a fight.

Do you even know who ^ they^ are............you are ignorant of Martial Arts!

You should be ashamed of yourself............. go do history study you poor lost soul!

End of discussion!

It's not the rules that made old UFC fun, it was the blatant mismatches : guys who had no clue what to do getting fucked-up so bad they quit MMA after like four bouts.

it looked more like a real fight because you had guys in there who didn't really know what they were doing

Why read social media, twitter drama, if you don't like it? Is it beamed straight into your brain?

These things are really, really easy to avoid

1.Look up fight date. Don't read/watch any pre fight hype bullshit

2.Order/watch fight on above date

3. STFU and enjoy the fights

I preferred it when it was style vs style and not everyone had an 'mma' style.

It's only kisses!

did i say something bad about them? something incorrect? what do you think about those guys as actual fighters? go learn aikido and then fight a mma fighter with just the knowledge of aikido....

Old UFC was dominated by mostly one-dimensional fighters fighting. New UFC is dominated by better athletes but also by USADA, missing weight and sparring/points fighting.

they punch each other for real, so i still like it.

I mean it was closer to a "real fight" in the sense that there were little to no rules. No rounds, no judges, and pretty much anything goes.
Cmpunk vs tank abott would have been a man slaughter.
It wasn't more real in the sense of being mixed martial arts. What we see today is at a far higher level because the skill sets are more well rounded. Back then guys that were black belts in Roidkwondo at their local gym would step in the cage. Fair point if you are about to bring up CM Punk. But outside of that today is more "real" mixed martial arts.
Cmpunk vs tank abott would have ended with a dead cmpunk.
Also a reminder in the 90s there were far less eyepokes(while legal) and ni covering breathing shit.

Only thing I liked about the UFC in the early days was that it was truly "style vs style." Growing up learning about so many different Martial Arts the old question of "which style is the best" always comes up.

The UFC was the closest we got to an answer (though really, I don't think too many BJJ guys would take the fight to the ground in a real fight if they were fighting on concrete, but I digress.)

The downside was that those Martial Artists weren't real fighters or all that athletic, relying mostly on skill over anything else, which made for some sloppy fights.

Now we have more athletic fighters who can fight for 15 min without gassing (most of the time), but I think many of them are not really martial artists. Meaning, they are products of an "MMA Gym" rather than a specialist in one particular style. They are trained to punch, kick, grapple, apply and defend submissions, but they aren't a true Black Belt in BJJ or a high ranking kickboxer, etc.

If MMA was comprised of Martial Arts experts of one area who cross train to be more complete and increase their athleticism rather than "Mixed Martial Artists" fights would be more exciting.
