Ahh the pack test, I had to do one of those when I worked a seasonal position with the National Park Service.

We had to do 3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45lb pack. It wasn't too tough for me, I finished 5+ minutes ahead of the deadline, but damn I was sore for days. Walking that fast is an unnatural movement.

Yea man, I hike close to 30 miles a week and I had a lot of the trouble just doing the 25-lb, 2 mile walk. I'm 5'7", don't know if being a midget has anything to do with it. But yea, jogging it would have been no problem. Walking like that is just weird.

What did you do for the park service?

I had a seasonal position as a Fisheries Biologist Technician before my senior year at college. We hiked out to remote mountain streams and did native trout population surveys. I lived in park housing for the 5 months I was there, there were about 20 seasonal employees living there so it was a lot of fun. It was kind of a surreal experience, those 5 months were like living someone else's life.

Wow that sounds awesome. My sister does something similar. She's on a hot shots crew during the fire season and chases birds around and does some record keeping on them for the parks service during her off months. You both are way more badass than me lol

- Considering starting a 3rd round of RRBT with a very specific goal in mind. I want to close the Iron Mind Left-Turn #3 and I want to only use Left-Turn grippers during the cycle. So I need to buy #1, #2 and #3, I don't see any point in buying the Trainer. IDK, maybe to round out the collection. The plan is to file the grippers down a little at a time as I progress through the Phases. I've read a lot of logs where this has been done with success.

Ripped a deck of 40 last night in one motion. Usually takes me at least the initial rip then a reset of hand position.

Quick grip workout before class.

tearing
45 cards with one hand reset. Initial tear went more than halfway through.

levering
side to sides and helocopters. Low volume.

My levering bar is a 16" pipe with a 5lb exersize plate held at the end with two spring collars. Its as thick as the hole in exersize plates are wide.

I tear Bicycle decks that I get at the local grocery store for $1.50. Im really trying to get to tearing a full deck so I can stop wasting money!

Getting four 30lb blobs tonight so I didnt wanna burn my hands out. I wanna be fresh for tomarrow.

Nothing to do after my morning class so I decided to mess around at the climbing gym. Even though I wasnt working I ended up helping with the after school kids club.

The climbing rope is a huge hit with the kids and its great because you dont have to explain anything. All these little girls were climbing to the top today and scaring the shit out of me HAHA.

I got a few kids interested in the rings. Had them doing dip position leg raises and pullups.

when I wasnt helping the kids...

Climbed the wave twice.(lead climbing on the ceiling, 50')
Climbed to top of 20' rope in 7 seconds.
Climbed rope 1.5 times without touching ground.
Worked on a hard V3 for a good hour straight without any rest. I wouldve graded it V4.
12 BW ring pullups.

Ring pullups ladder with a 12 year old whos forearms are literally thicker than his upper arms and 16 year old whos going to surpass me in pullup strength soon.

We take turns doing pullups starting at 1. We all do one. Then 2. We all do 2 and so on. I got to the 9th set and failed on my 8th rep. My opponents tied at the 8th rep on the 10th set.

They beat me! In my defense, I wasnt fresh. I had been lead climbing, bouldering and rope climbing for hours before that.

New Paltz BJJ club

2nd class

Brian brought a couple of blue belts and a white from his school so everyone could roll with somebody with a bit of experience. There was about 15 New Paltz students.

I helped beginners with kimura from guard and the sweep you use if its defended and/or your partner postures up to high. Got a few in myself. Something Ive drilled to death in the past though.

Taught beginners basics double under scoop guard pass. Drilled it.

Positional training.
From closed guard. Top guy working to pass. Bottom guy working for sweep or submission. If sweep, submission or pass is achieved the guy that got it would stay and a fresh partner would come in.

I played off my back the entire time because thats where Im at my weakeast. Got about half a dozen armbars on complete beginners. Some arm drag sweeps. Nobody passed on me.
I played open guard with the white belt because he knew what he was doing. He threw a sneaky straight ankle on me. I defended, stood up and tapped him with a standing straight ankle(something I was hitting on blues consistantly before I stopped training, pretty underutilized submission if you ask me).

Finally got to roll with Brian. He started in my closed guard. Tried playing an open guard but he started passing. I turtled up, he went for a RNC without hooks and I hipped out and reguarded. Working for an omaplata and he passed my guard with a double leg scoop sort of move. Im just happy I reguarded a brown belt haha. Wanted to roll with the blues but I had class and had to get outta there.

Im pretty impressed that I still have the hips I had when I was training regularly. My ip movement hasnt gone anywhere. My open guard didnt fall behind as bad as I thought it would. I also feel strong like bull. I rolled with a couple of meatheads that had maybe 3' and 30lbs on me. I muscled them around pretty easily without getting winded.

Im leaving my CoC Sport in my car on the dash so I use it whenever Im driving. Takes me about half an hour to get to school so I wanna get alittle grip work done.

Worked tonight.

Random bouldering, lead climbing.

Random muscleups on rings. Got 2 in a row a few times.

Tore deck of 54 cards. PR

Deck + jokers. I didnt realize the jokers made the deck 54. Initial tear went halfway through. Readjusted my hands and finished the job.

Pullup ladder on rings with one other person. 16 yr old pullup phenom.
Got to 9 and worked my way back to 1. 30 sec to 1 minute rests between sets. Took less than 15 minutes. Biceps felt like they would explode. 81 pullups in total.

Kid beat me again. He got to set 10 and failed at rep 2. He didnt work his way down.

Hope the pullups dont effect my deadlifting tomarrow.

5 minutes rests between sets until set 3. 10 minutes rest between for next 2 sets.

Last 3 sets had trouble locking out on last rep. Contracted glutes violently to lock out.

Hamstrings took the brunt of this workout. I didnt notice my quads and glutes were fried until I started lifting. Must have not recovered from last squat workout.

It was a busy day today. We had a birthday party. The parents from the party had some belay experience and wanted to belay there kids for lead climbing. I put the rope through the first few clips because I didnt think any of the girls would be able to do that and kept an eye on em.
A hippie couple in there mid 30s approached me at the register a few minutes later. They were furious because the girls couldnt even reach the 3rd clip and said they shouldnt even be climbing there. They were complaining they had been waiting for a long time to climb. I told them the girls had every right to climb there no matter what there experience level was and they would have to wait. They asked for there money back but I told em they had been climbing for almost 3 hours so I couldnt give it back.
I started getting cursed at. Now this is the funny part. The guy, who was about 6' and maybe 160 lbs soaking wet told me he wanted to talk about this outside. Implying he wanted to fight me. I told him nothing would make me happier but I couldnt right now because I was working but to come back at 7 when I got off. They left screaming curses in front of a packed house of children and shut the lights off as they walked out.

Well he never showed up at 7. Suprise suprise. I found out later from a few friends of mine that he has a reputation as a druggy hot head.

I hate getting challenged and the person backing out. It happens often.

Bought a 6lb sledge hammer. No plastic or any padding on the handles. Just a straight 1.5" thick hickory handle. Its about 36" tall.

I had a 9lb sledge but I couldnt get much out of it. The handle was thinner than usual which made some stuff painful and I had to choke up on it pretty far for everything.

I can hold this hammer straight out front from the end for about a second. Can hold it straight out back for about 5 seconds.

Using a shaprie I made a mark every 4", or about the width of my hand when I have a grip and am squeezing, on it so I have a point of reference.

How are things?

Thanks Meow. Things are real good. Work is keeping me busy, barely getting in this silly bodybuilding stuff. Weather is nice here in NY though, leaves are changing.

had BJJ club meeting today.

Went over knee through middle pass to step over head for arm bar or kimura.

Rolled a few times.

First guy had around 5 months experience. Looked to be 200lbs, little taller than me. I played off my back working for inverted armbars and various chokes. I eventually swept him and got to a side control. I got a kimura locked up and threw my leg over. He had a realy good hold on his other hand and I tried breaking it. I got in sumo position and tried pulling his arms apart but ended up deadlifting his entire body in the air about 3 feet but still couldnt finish the armlock. I let go and played in his open guardand eventually tapped him with a standing straight ankle. Its scary how much pressure you can put on an ankle in that position. I feel like if I could break a leg that way.

Second guy was a scrawny beginner. I arm dragged him off my back, took his back and choked him in less than 3 seconds.

Rolled with the big guy again. Played in my closed guard. Same thing, working inverted armbars, chokes, kimuras, sweeps. He defended all very well. I got a nice omaplata sweep and pretty much worked around him in north south and side control for 10 minutes. He was hard to hold down and even tougher to submit from there. He gave me very little openings for submissions so I was content on just using my hips and concentrating on control and intelligent movement. He eventually regaurded cuz I got sloppy. We had to call class by then.

BW 169
Im feeling fat and slow again. Need to get my BW under 165 again. I felt my best then. My stamina right now is fucking horrible. Ill cut out any fatty foods like turkey bacon and keep any carb intake to just rice for a while.

Notes

- BW 180

- Got bit by a tick at work Saturday. Saw the doctor Monday because the bite area looked "angry". Doc said it was probably Lyme and put me on a 3 week cycle of doxy. I don't know if it's related but the past couple of days I've just felt shitty. Shitty mood, low energy mehhhhh

- Last night had a crazy rescue. Had to find a guy who hurt his knee deep in the woods. Carrying him out on the closest trail would have taken all day, literally. We had to go to the maps and cut through someone's private property. Used chainsaws to cut a few miles of trails to get a UTV as close as possible. Moved boulders, logs, brush out of the way by hand and constructed crude footpath. Eventually ended up carrying the guy out on a board in the dark. UTV came close to rolling twice and 3 of us needed to hang off the other side to right it. Thing got stuck in the mud. It was exhausting. I've done a lot of search and rescues in the past 7 months but this was probably the most complicated and required the most resources.

Cant remember doing it but I mustve promised my girl Id come to the gym with her today. To beat from BJJ and still recovering from deads so I didnt realy do much.

I was doing extremly high rep shoulder prehab complexes with 10lb dumbells and a couple of scrawny hipsters doing 1/2 benches and 25lb curls scoffed at me. I could hear them saying shit like "some people just dont know what to do in the gym" and "why doesnt he try and challenge himself" LOL
shouldve asked em to come to the BJJ meetings.

Came down to Long Island for the three day weekend.

BJJ class at Airborne BJJ.

So my old school fell to pieces and two of the best purple belts started there own school, one being Eric Uresk, a professional MMA fighter and amazing submission grappler/take down artist.

Went over a a sweep from an open guard. Top guy has a knee up pushing through legs. Bottom guy goes shin to shin overhooks arm on other side and kicks out knee while using shin to shin hook to propell top guy over. Went over alot of transitions to glover sweeps and x-guard sweeps from it. Very usefull stuff.

Rolled with Eric for 2 back to back 5 minute rounds. Had a guillotene in the first roll and he had to defend for about 10 seconds. That was the highlight. I reguarded him a couple of times and had some productive controlled scarmbles which is very hard to achieve when grappling with someone with extremly tight control like Eric has. I got submitted at least half a doezen times, all NS chokes or Darce chokes. He passed my guard at will usually. It was all to be expected though, Eric is frightening.

Rolled with another guy with same game as Eric. Got an omaplata sweep from rubber guard. Arm drag took his back. Had him in a deeeeeep gogoplata but this guys neck is like a block of cement, it didnt affect him. He actually picked me up to kill smash height but time let out before he could fuck around. I never actually submitted him but my hips stayed very active and I threatened him with all the submission attempts I already mentioned. He got a few NS chokes on me.

I puked my brains out at this point into the snow outside.

Chewed some gum and had a "super fight" with Eric. Started standing. I survived for over 2 minutes. Tried a few arm drags and double legs but got stuffed, didnt nreally threaten him at all. I stuffed a few of his doubles but he eventually got me with one and quickly submitted me.

Very good class. The new school is really great. Everyone there is motivated and very interested in technique. Good experience.

Bought a 60lb hex DB.
Chopped one side off.
Paint was so slick I couldnt lift it.
Sanded paint off of one of the parts, left the rest slippery for harder lifts later on.
Chalked up I can lift it and hold it for about 10 seconds both hands.
Not chalked up I can lift it but not for more than 2 seconds.
Took me about 30 minutes to saw one side off and 20 minutes to sand it all nice with a dremel.
Weighs in at 30.5 lbs on the dot.
Ill actually get a workout with this tomarrow after BJJ.

Got some Homework to do.

Notes

- Very long search and rescue last night. Bushwacking through the woods at night with a compass and map. Pack test for controlled burns in NY the day before which was a 2 mile walk(no running) in a 25-lb pack in less than 30 minutes. I made it in 29:23. Dead last. Damn my stubby legs. I was exhausted today to say the least and just needed to put something overhead. kept it short and sweet

good continued grip work, how much do you think that is playing into your JJ success.
