I don't think the father did anything wrong per se, but it could definitely have been handled better and the kid did not need to die. Tragedy all around imo.
A lot of the outrage was a pure political thing because the mainstream media hates Trump's guts and they had found a weapon against him. Trump himself just brushed it off as 'locker room talk' and that was that. It didn't really stop him from being elected weeks later.

There was some noise but Trump definitely didn't go on TV to apologize for it. I also recall lots of people in the War Room praising Trump for being such an alpha.
