The only time I get the armbar is off a failed triangle, in fact I rarely even attempt to finish the triangle and only use the triangle grip to get the armbar... I end up with a modified armbar with both feet across partners face/neck.

First of all, with the bear hug, you have your legs and hips under you which is where you generate all the power that can come with the bear hug. Closed guard, you're just hanging off your opponent.

There's no denying that having a strong half guard is of the utmost importance as you'll end up there someway somehow. Most champions acknowledge it.
