Schools should be judged on a case to case basis. Here are some red flags for me:
Gym has no sparring.
Gym makes you buy their gi and wear their patches.
You aren't allowed to train at other gyms.
Coach or certain students will roll very hard with someone due to a perceived slight.
Coach shows...
Seems like there's a few good schools in the area, but I've got to be honest and say that if the prices are high enough I'm probably not going to train. Been training since 2006, but mostly out of people's private gyms or garages since grad school due to prices or limited training options. None...
I bought a lifetime membership almost a decade ago now. I'm probably one of the first 100 members. The content is good and well worth the cost compared to buying most DVDs and he's got a long history of constantly improving his content. It's come a long way.
The one in Watsonville is 40 minutes in good traffic (42 minutes from New Monterey maybe 5 minutes less from Old Monterey).
Santa Cruz is a good hour and can take longer in bad traffic.
San Jose is an hour and a half in a good traffic if you drive fast and you are lucky enough to get no...
Monterey Sports Center has a wrestling class that I hear is good but have never checked out personally. I can't remember if they are once a week or twice but at the price anything at the sports center can't be beat. I'd highly recommend any kid learning BJJ to also learn wrestling.
Daniel...
I've trained with a lot of Megatons guys so I know they are very good. I'd say the caliber of their belts is typically higher than other gyms I've trained at. I actually like Megatons black belts better than Megaton when it comes to teaching. His place is the best place to train if you also want...
If we are completely honest... almost all we have is hearsay about who influenced who and to what degree (occasionally we have a quote from an interview or book from someone who is considered authoritative). I for one, like the idea that they was a cross-breeding of ideas and techniques. I quite...
Thanks! I'll take heed of Shen (not "the" Shen is it?) and Drew and keep on working on the Brabo. I know Bjorn has a great segment on it and I remember Aesopian having some good material as well the Nth Dimension series.
I am finding it super hard to set up a brabo/darce or any kind of arm triangle. The issue has been working their arm up high enough to make the choke tight. When I say these guys are strong I mean it. I'll work in the Brabo but the truth is lately I have had more luck getting their hands in the...
I had not been doing BJJ in a while due to school, work, & family commitments. Now that I am back I seem to be doing fine with most of my game but haven't hit chokes with the military guys I grapple with. I think its a combination of them resisting as strongly as any opponent can and me just not...
I'd say it proved AKA is a heck of a place to train. Having been there I would say that a lot of the fighters have experience with college wrestling but their actually training focuses a lot of BJJ, Judo, Kickboxing and MMA specific training and not a whole lot of wrestling training per se (but...
Well at least I am not the only one. Kesting really tested his distributor's ability to handle such a load (both via the web and actually sending out the DVD's). I can't say the distributor passed with flying colors.
Typically mail from Canada to the US (and vice versa) takes between 3-5...
I remember ordering one in the first round and I live in the U.S. I really expected I would have got it by now. Have others gotten it?
I came back to this forum after not posting for 2-3 years just to ask this.
If anyone doubts Camarillo or his cool then go there and spar with his students. I have traveled a lot and trained at several schools on different continents. I can say that there average skill of their ranked students is pretty good. He does not hold his students back from ranks as some other...
I can't believe people are giving sh*t to the OP. It is an illegal move. It is illegal because it injures people.
Don't do it unless you are allowed to do it.
I have someone who does neck cranks to me all the time no matter how many times I ask him not to. No I don't even roll with him. I...
This topic comes up at least twice a month. It is true, if your skills is roughly equal the bigger stronger guy will win. It is hard to submit someone bigger and stronger from the bottom. Learn some arm drags so that you can take the bag. Use submissions more to set up sweeps than to actually...
I was at American Kickboxing Academy, where Dave Camarillo teaches, and I remember countering a brabo choke the way my first instructor taught us to counter all head and arm triangle chokes which is to put the arm we are getting choked with under our knee and hug our knee so that the choke can't...
Just to clarify, I thought that it was okay to break someone's grip by grabbing their fingers provided you were not bending them backwards as a submission. Also, the key word is fingers plural not just one finger.
