    Official Judo Thread

IMO it requires high IQ to do more than learn by feel. But if you are a niche sport you can easily end up with a generation where there simply isn't someone high IQ and dedicated to teaching.

Okay, maybe I'll disappear for a while again. Just got bored at work.

    Official Judo Thread

This is what I think it the weakest point of Judo teaching. Maybe it's a US problem, maybe not, but there are no good resources that teach you comprehensively how to move and maneuver uke into a throw. So a large portion of people in Judo never go beyond stand and bang, or strip grips and do...

Wow, this thread is still going.

    Recently tore my ACL

I tore mine (according to doctor but never MRI), not painful pop like yours with massive swelling. Afterwards I could tell it wasn't as supportive as before, but I wasn't going to get surgery either way. Took a year off and it's about 95% of what it was, and doesn't feel like it's going to...

Rise of Osoto Gari in MMA

Why don't we just rename everything to hip throw and sweep then...

Rise of Osoto Gari in MMA

WTF, that is harai goshi and a no-brainer one at that. Very very common form of harai goshi. Easy diagnosis - that throw required hip contact whereas osoto gari doesn't. Not to mention it wasn't a reaping action. This guy is smoking something strong.

Refusing to roll with dirty people

Part of maturity is to be able to state your terms and stick by them. Don't fall for his act. This also helps change the behavior of others.

Rise of Osoto Gari in MMA

Osoto gari is not an easy technique to do, even if it looks like another footsweep. Basically only Judo people might have enough practice to make it work, and even within Judo not many master it well enough for it to be their big gun throw. You have few Judo people in MMA as it is, plus the...

Should attacking the back of the knees be illegal Tani Otoshi vid

IMO it's useful to distinguish throws, because the setup required could be very different even if the end result looks similar.

Should attacking the back of the knees be illegal Tani Otoshi vid

Alright, just watched the vid... that was more of a shitty yoko otoshi than a shitty tani otoshi

Should attacking the back of the knees be illegal Tani Otoshi vid

The post was about whether it was possible at all, so no need to appeal to a higher authority with world level Judo. Which, in that case competitors know and accept the risks, and for the most part are skilled enough not to be injured from tani otoshi. But I wouldn't teach tani otoshi to...

Should attacking the back of the knees be illegal Tani Otoshi vid

If uke can move his near foot back, then you did not have full control. Similarly, your kids do not have full control in their throws even if they looked like it. This is not an insult to your kids. I just question that that level of skill can happen that young. By full control I mean you...

Should attacking the back of the knees be illegal Tani Otoshi vid

Not true, this only happens when you didn't have control over uke and made a hail mary type move. The problem is that the skill to use sacrifice throws correctly doesn't come until after black belt, IMO. Think of all the back flop tomoenage attempts. No, like all throws kuzushi and control...

Who hasn’t trained since last March?

I haven't trained since March but I feel mostly good about it. No weight change but rather my joints feel better. My mindshare has mostly moved on to other things. Out with a whimper, and not a bang? I suppose it's unexpected to stop training after 20 years. Post-covid I might move to an...

How good is Mackenzie Dern compared to a male BJJ guy?

Not sure why this thread is so long now, but what is missed that it's not just the strength difference, but that most competitors' skill has been developed around beating people near their own attributes. So me as a typical male is not just going against a high level but weaker female, but one...

It's all about matchups. I always like Pride better than UFC, because they made matchups that weren't all grinds. Yes have title matches for hardcore fans, but let's be honest freakshows are fun too. Judo should mix it up too. Superfights, open weights, newaza. Nobody wants to grind through...

Judo the most horrible Grappling sport to watch

I'm not sure why you think it's either/or. If professional fights are well paying, that doesn't mean the Olympics get cut out. Plus a lot of strong Judo countries already have a wrestling culture, so it's not due to the Olympics that they are strong. Plenty of countries do not have any real...

Judo the most horrible Grappling sport to watch

Prestige is the cliche answer, but the real answer is funding and institutionalization. Olympics provide some level of funding and financial reward - but that really just amounts to meaningful levels in poor countries. The rest either needs to come from state support, or actual sales. The...
