    Grading Yourself in the Following

Rank: Blue Age: 39 Here is an assessment of my game in its current state: Takedowns: F Passing: B Guard: D Defense/Escape: C Obviously, against higher belts, those grades are much lower. That being said, I am very comfortable in the top of the guard and working a pass, likely...

Is 34 too old to start Bjj?

I started at 34. I am 39 now. I love it. Just go and train. Just be smart about training. Wisdom is your advantage over the young bucks, anyway.

Too tired to train on a rainy day

I agree with the following advice: 1. Take your gear with you when you leave for work so you can head straight to the gym afterwards. 2. When you do not feel like going, at least go for the first few minutes and see if you feel like staying. Chances are, you will stay and have a great...

Perpendicular Pass? (top of half guard)

Hi all. Once upon a time I learned a half-guard pass that I listed only in my BJJ notes as the "perpendicular pass." It was apparently an alternative to the tripod pass, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the details of the technique. Does anyone know the specifics of this move? It...

Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at 17 years old. Advice?

Relax. Relax some more. And then when you think you are relaxed, relax just a little more. Don't go all out when you roll. Try to use the techniques you are covering in class. After that, stick with it and don't quit.

starting bjj tomorrow night and im nervous

I was like you before my first class. Just show up and have fun. Above all, try to relax and not go all out. Slow is fast. It was the best decision I've ever made.

caio terra 111 half guard techniques

I am working through the "getting out of bad spots" section now. It has worked wonders for my half-guard bottom game, and I have barely scratched the surface. I think what I appreciate most about the instructional is the level of detail. Terra gives you a lot of the concepts behind what he is...

    Camarillo's new book

A friend of mine let me look at his copy, and I was underwhelmed just flipping through it (which I hate to admit, because I really like Dave). I thought the format was really distracting also. That being said, I have not studied it closely, and I had not ruled out the possibility of finding a...

    BJJ: A female cop's perspective

Off topic, but the taser is actually considered less invasive than pepper spray on the use of force continuum because of the length of decontamination associated with pepper spray versus the relative quickness with which tasered subjects recover. I am by no means a use of force expert, but that...

Best training situation for a Jiu Jitsu beginner?

I am making some assumptions here (because I don't have all of the information), but in general, it is probably a good sign that there are a number of higher level belts at your school and that there is a black belt to instruct. Having a number of high level belts around can definitely help you...

What is your policy on beginners?

If new guys are spazzing out, I usually just hold them in my guard and let them tire themselves out. So many times they just want to pin my arms down and go all strength monster on me, like they're afraid that if my hands touch them they'll die. I will then typically sweep them, give them a...

    The reason I started BJJ

Jag, you have a good looking family. Congrats on changing your lifestyle in such positive ways. I am grateful for your posts in that regard. Very inspiring, particularly for us 37 year-old blue belts.
