I went to judo practice yesterday and it went fairly well. We are finally using crash pads a little bit.
Ironically I tend to get better training partners in the throwing portion of bjj class because that one is bigger and has more young guys.
Yeah, my situation is not the best. It's kind of a small club so chances are I'm getting paired with somone that isn't comfortable falling.
I will probably just do less judo and a bit more bjj/ wrestling.
Thanks, telling them to relax is a good idea.
I'm less frustrated about randori because it is difficult for everyone and I do look for favorable positions already.
However being met with resistance during drills makes me feel like my time is being wasted.
I'm getting a bit older and have...
Do you guys have any tips for training with uncooperative partners?
Recently I stopped going to judo class partly as I had other priorities and partly out of frustration with larger adult beginners that that never got comfortable falling.
However my schedule opened up so I'm considering...
My club does a lot of footsweeps because they are easier falls for newbies but then newbies struggle to do them compared to hip throws. Its frustrating.
However there is a now wrestling class at my gym I'm excited for.
For you guys that help coach, how well are the lower belts ( below brown) able to execute new throws in randori? Let's say they drill a osotogari varation for several weeks, do you expect them to hit that in randori against another colored belt?
I'm noticing a lot of the footsweeps my coach shows require a uke to move a certain way that some of the newer guys struggle to do. Is there a way to overcome this? Its real frustrating.
I think some of those sequences could work to set up a clinch but ducking into a double leg takedown seems like a higher percentage move.
Interestingly the first several would work better in a pure grappling context.
Which of these formats or tournaments is open to outsiders? I currently train at a Mauy Thai gym and don't mind heavy sparring. However, I am afraid of losing an eye or needing surgery from a detached retina. Something like knock down karate or even Daido Juko looks really cool. How would I...
I find BJJ blue belts are hard to throw and can even throw me if they have even 6 month of judo training. However if they don't cross train they act like I will murder them and are too scared to train on the feet. Then they sit on their but and choke me.
I also train with Mauy Thai fighters...
Does anyone prefer learning or teaching a random technique every week than from a set curriculum?
It seems like everyone agrees BJJ could use more structure in lessons and a thought out curriculum.
Oddly enough the only grappling instructor I had that didn't use one had a judo/ Sambo...
it seems inconsistent to say an aggressive woman is dangerous, but then also say she can't beat up a male. Which is it? Seems like he wants to have his cake and eat it too.
Wrestling has more overlap with Mauy Thai and would help you in the clinch. It also would give you more of a work out and better cardio than BJJ. If Mauy Thai is the focus I would train wrestling if I was you.
However, if you want to compete in MMA you will need to do all three , if money is...
