    BJJ at 40+...any advice?

Tap. Tap all the time. Tap before you think you need to tap (at least for a while). Don't fight submissions if there's any chance your partner will end up ripping the submission to finish it...your body doesn't heal like it used to. As far as mindset goes, you're going to be bad and you've...

NO CUP!!! protect your balls!!! What grappling sports dont wear groin protection??

I've rolled with people who say they wear some type of compression shorts that have extra padding on the groin and they all loved it, but I don't know what brand or type they were. Anyway, I know a lot of those guys wore those pants in IBJJF competitions, so maybe that's an option.

Why is wrestling not popular? Most schools do not even know their wrestling team

I think he's saying that, combined, all six sessions of the NCAA championships had that many people in attendance. It's a solid number. (I think it's six sessions...maybe)

Why is wrestling not popular? Most schools do not even know their wrestling team

I grew up in Texas (I graduated high school in 2000 and I don't even remember wrestling existing in my area) and I've lived in Florida and New York City as an adult. Outside of the people I've met at BJJ places, I haven't known too many people who really cared about wrestling, but I just moved...

Cost of BJJ in New York

Unity is amazing. When I worked out at Unity, the locker room was very small and the mats would get overcrowded, but they've moved to a new place that looks amazing (I'm not in NYC anymore, so I can't check it out). Marcelo's is great (I went there for six months because it worked better with...

Cost of BJJ in New York

Yes, $200 a month is about right if you pay for 6 months or a year in advance (or sign a contract) Almost everywhere is free for the trial class, but the drop-in fees can get pretty high if you're planning to go more than one day.

    Gi or No Gi?

Two things that changed my preference from gi to no-gi when I moved to New York City: 1. Laundry is so damn annoying when you don't have a washer or dryer in your apartment (and washing by hand is terrible). 2. Wearing a gi at Unity in July and August is close to torture when you're not used...

Is competing at Masters divisions laughed at?

Yeah, a guy who trains where I do entered a tournament in the master's division last year (two years ago?) and went against Shaolin in his second match.

    BJJ rolling do’s/ do nots

I'm not sure if this is what he's talking about, but over the years, I've seen quite a few new people who will literally punch someone else's forearm or wrist to break a grip. Don't be that guy. When I first started, the can opener was basically all I knew how to do from inside someone's...

I want to promote myself to blue belt. Should I?

No, nothing like that. It's more that people I don't recognize will show up in blue belts and not be able to complete the warm ups properly (forward/backward rolls down the mat, hip escapes down the mat, etc.). I'm not saying anyone has definitely done it, but there are blue belts who show up...

I want to promote myself to blue belt. Should I?

I'm at a pretty large academy and I'm pretty sure there are a few people who promoted themselves to blue belt, but I don't think anyone cares. The only benefit is that they start closer to the front of the line during warm ups. Beyond blue belt, someone might question it, but I don't ever...

    Membership costs

I haven't been there in a few years, but I paid $60 a month for unlimited classes with a brown belt in Tallahassee, FL. He's been a black belt for a few years now and I know his prices were the same up until at least a couple years ago.

Just saw this on FB today. 10th Planet drama.

I work with a couple people like this. They claim they trained at a 10th Planet school before they transferred here (I just take their word for it and they came from different parts of the country) and both state that they want to get back into grappling. I've tried to get them to come train...

    Rolling with bursitis AND tendinittis

Active release therapy? I've never done it personally or looked at any research, but I think that's what it stands for, if you want to look it up.

Got destroyed in first bjj class, how do I improve

I know it will be hard if it's not built into the class, but if you can find someone who will do positional sparring with you (using the positions you used during the technique portion of the class), it will help a lot.

Albion Online, most brutal MMO ever?

Is anyone still playing Albion? If you haven't tried it, I think the pvp is some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game (mainly the ZvZ fights). The last update basically eliminated any lag I was getting in large fights (and I don't even run ZvZ settings anymore). I can log in at any...

Reason 1,325 why you should learn to wrestle as a BJJ guy...

I grew up in Central Texas and I don't ever remember hearing of any school having a wrestling team. Is that still the case or has it become more popular as MMA and BJJ have become more popular (I've been out of high school for over 15 years)?

Gordon "my parents pay for everything so I can train full time" Ryan

I was going to say something similar. I'm in NYC and most of the people under 30 that train where I train are heavily supported by their parents. I'm a little jealous that I have to work and they don't, but I'm happy for them.

ADCC Brackets just released on Flo (AND PBP)

Ugh. I really thought Murilo was going to make it to the final or lose to Keenan. Thanks a lot for the updates, guys.
