    Bad Eyesight and Fighting

7.5 L / 6.5 R here. Kick boxing is actually one of the few sports that I can do without having to wear contact lenses so I really enjoy training without glasses, since the opponent is standing close enough in kick boxing, unlike racquet sports, etc. I've never worn glasses or contacts when...

    winning head gear

I picked up the FG5000 (i.e. model with face bar) recently. Previously, I used a Hayabusa Kanpeki headgear. The FG5000 manages to be both more protective AND lighter. It's extremely sturdy and even heavy direct blows feel like nothing. I definitely felt I got value for the much higher price (it...

    My career and optimism

Good luck to you, this is very inspiring to read. I am almost 35 years old, and am also tied to my office computer most of the day. I can only train one or two days a week at most. It's my dream to take a year off to fight, even if just interclubs and amateurs. All the best!

Going back to Training (After Lasik and Jaw Surgery)

RE Lasik, I'm also near-sighted so this is something I've also looked into. Almost all sources say not to do contact sports after Lasik because the procedure involves cutting a flap in the cornea, which becomes vulnerable to injury post-operation. Would be grateful if you could share your own...

Is this normal for a MT Gym

Unless absolutely no striking techniques are being taught (I assume the trainer is at least teaching some basic punch/kick movements, even if just against the mirror as you mentioned?), if there is a strong emphasis on skipping rope and teaching movement, footwork and stance I would actually say...

how dangerous was nicholas pettas in his prime?

seconded - I watched the entire samurai spirits series, they are all on YouTube nowadays.

Which is more realistic? Shotokan or Kyokushin?

Seconding. Did Shotokan for several years in Canada. It's been great for introducing me to martial arts, but : - we focused more on kata, and rarely even point-sparred (I think this is common in most dojos). A lot of schools focus on kata, and spend a majority of their time on it to the...

Training at two different kickboxing gyms...

I had this question too... I'd say just be open and frank and let instructors in both gyms that you have been training elsewhere too. It might be more awkward/embarrassing for them to find out from third parties, most coaches in the same locality probably know and talk to each other.

Asking for the Ranking of Muai Thai Gym in Bangkok

Would you also consider Fairtex Bangplee as it is quite close to Bangkok (30-40 mins cab ride from airport)? I've been there for a short stay this year and enjoyed it a lot. It's in a location with few distractions.

    Is headgear worth it?

I started wearing headgear 6 months ago and never went back - it's true it doesn't prevent concussions but it's worth it just for preventing small cuts and scratches, especially if you have a client-facing job. Just make sure you get to try it on before you buy it, make sure the headgear you...

    Sparring Problems Thread

Relatedly, people who wouldnt stop talking afterwards trying to explain why they did bad / make up excuses (eg im tired, still hurting from last week, thats why you got me) if they perceive that they "lost" or felt they made mistakes in the sparring.

Had to use my BJJ/MMA skillz to stop a 2 on 1 fight/assault last night.....

Slightly offtopic, but how do you throw a good thai leg kick with shoes on? I always feel that pivoting with my standing leg would twist my ankle if I was wearing shoes. Unless you're low kicking without pivoting and doing a karate style chambered kick? But that doesnt seem to work for low...

    Mothballs and Gear

I tried to do that with putting moth balls in my gym locker - Only problem is that they have a strong smell themselves and eventually people started asking me what the smell was :p

What would Traditionalist think about today MMA evolution?

I think part of the reason too was that Kodokan disapproved of fighting for money.

Is there such thing as "Going too hard" in jiu jitsu?

I recently restarted bjj at a gym catered to office workers, its was a big difference from doing bjj when I was in university where people tended to roll "hard". Like other posters noted, one thing i was told particularly by senior belts was to apply submissions gradually and not to force it on...

Ever wanted to learn a martial art that is largely considered "ineffective?"

I spent 3 weeks in Beijing one time and did some shuai jiao there. From what I understand from localsm even in China shuai jiao is fading in popularity as parents would rather send kids into tkd and athletes eventually switch to judo for better career opportunities. The locals were making...
