    Muay Thai grading

The grading system has two levels… 1. You cannot fight 2. You can fight if you’re feeling jiggy….add in 3. You can fight better!

Round kick with ball of foot

One of my TKD teachers taught the BOF round kick. We practiced it that way in the air, on the heavy bag, and pads. It was also used in sparring with control when kicking to vital targets (I.e. contact to body but pulled for head kicks). My opinion? It was much easier to apply against a...

    Styles of Muay Thai

I originally learned under a couple Thai coaches many years back, and since then trained with many others who learned from different coaches. I knew of it back in the day, but it just wasn’t a big deal. It was matter of fact and not something someone strived to achieve. I just thought it...

    Styles of Muay Thai

So while I’ve been away for a bit because...life...I’ve started to re engage in my former circles and noticed something different. Where Muay Thai was just Muay Thai (as Americans go)...I’m noticing a lot of buzz now about the sub-styles, e.g. Muay Mat, Muay Te, Muay Khao, and Muay Femeu...

Well shit. I take a Sherdog break and come back to this?! I've got some catching up to do apparently.

Wing Chun or Muay Thai? Which is Truly More Effective for Self Defense?

The fact that this subject is still debated baffles me. I've studied and practiced both arts extensively. They both have merit when someone understands and can apply the overall strengths while avoiding the inherent weaknesses of the stylistic constructs.

How to "bring the knee up" faster in kicking?

The broadest answer is any supplemental exercise that requires you to raise your knees explosively. E.G. Skipping rope (highly recommended in general anyway), doing plyo jumps on and or off things, stair sprints, etc. But as Bruce would say...the activity itself. Practice simply bringing up...

Hey so someone fill me in on the last few years....

Wooooow. So we all got old and fat? I had a kid too, younger than Sinister's. I'm fixing to gear up again as I need to start getting ready to train the kiddo. She learned to kick before she learned to stand and walk on her own. Priorities!

Hey so someone fill me in on the last few years....

This place looks a little different. I googled something for my martial arts group of old, and the thread of the dude trying to call me out popped up in the results and brought me back here! Any of the same folks still posting up? Or is it a new generation?

How do you drill head movement

Head movement becomes instinctive when you drill it literally with everything you do. Practicing individual tech? Jab and move your head right after. Cross and move your head right after. Add some footwork in there too to change angles. Shadowboxing? Make sure to have defense and head...

    VIDEO: Friday knife defense

WTF am I reading here? First...there is NO such thing as an "advanced" knife hold, and holding a knife up and down means jack shit in terms of making the knife more or less effective. What you're forgetting is that all you have to do is TOUCH the other person. The way the knife is held is...

Choosing between kyokushin and muay thai

My vote is Muay Thai....all the way. I've studied full contact Karate as well, and while it's great, it's not as complete as Muay Thai is in terms of getting in skills with the clinch, and elbows and knees specifically. Your mileage may vary depending on the school.

    Do you think krav-maga stinks?

Let me preface this response with this: I don't frequent KM places. I have taken a couple of seminars for weapons disarms, and seen some of what they teach. I have some acquaintances that I'll talk shop with as well about fighting that are various "levels" in KM as well. First...the KM...

    Chatri Sityodtong on Conor McGregor

To be fair, muay thai stances aren't always tall. The stances vary by person and gym much like any fighting art as do the specialities that each fighter relies on. Some are clinchers, some are punchers, some are kickers, some focus on knees and elbows. And let's not forget that generally...

Low rep strikes for powerful strikes?

"Power Training" as the OP discusses...already happens in fighting gyms. I don't know why he thinks it doesn't. During a typical round of bag work, you're hitting 3-5 times on the bag, and some are light and some are heavy and some are as hard as you can muster. Sometimes, you'll do a set...
