That makes more sense, you are setting up an action-reaction sequence, to get uke weight on the foot/leg. Just make sure you have uke weight on it, if it isn't, he can just move his leg out of the way.

We both know you were vindicated anyway, regardless of sour grapes. Turning people over to pin them is kiddie judo. Graduating to the full range of possibilities is grown-up Judo.

Damn, I was trying to be diplomatic... If either you or I had a dollar for all the incorrectly taught judo we've seen, at least one of us would be able to afford more ibuprofen and alleve...

I'm not surprised. Think about it though, why lift uke if you want to throw him down ?

Might be, post some video of you doing both and let's see. Harai requires you to get further across uke, which can be problematic. Uchi Mata is more difficult to do in general, though, technically speaking. If you have a good Harai Goshi, though, Uchi Mata should come fairly easily. Adapting...

Why would lift the upper body for Osoto Gari, you want the weight on the leg you are going to cut out from under uke ? That's how reaping throws work.

Sense of opportunity is critical for footsweeps. Requires a massive amount of drilling and throwing practice to get it right, and then you find out that the better players provide such small opportunities for them, it's incredibly difficult to catch them. yeah, zanshin...

Zanshin means something like "alertness remaining". It is a kind of focus and control, physical and mental domination, of an opponent after a technique is completed, plus awareness of one's environment. It's a term from Japanese martial arts. Although I was taught the concept early on in my...

I concur with those details. I'd say that both judoka were kind of "uncontrolled", with the OP here being the more controlled of the two.

Sorry for the confusion on my part. You looked like more of a black belt than your opponent. I'd say you pretty much kicked his butt, your overall posture, gripping, and movement were better. You controlled his constant spamming of the big overhand grip pretty well, and did some nice...

I think I saw this one on Facebook on one of the Judo groups. Anything specific you want to ask, you are wearing the blue belt, correct ? Leg grabs really change the dynamics of dealing with the big overhand grip, eh? You opponent didn't do it very well, but still... You pretty much had the...

99.99% of people are never going to do Judo as long or as seriously as I have, so it's not really an issue. It's entirely possible to do Judo sanely. It's just say, for example, RJ and I didn't choose that path.

I've been doing Judo for almost 38 years now, since I was 17 years old. I competed multiple times a year from the time I was 18 years old, competed at US Nationals, National Collegiate, and up to US Open/International level. And you can bet I trained seriously for it, multiple times a week...

The older you get, the worse it gets, IME. I do BJJ, but even that puts a strain on me. As I told my coach, my attitude writes checks my body can't cash. Once I got my cardio back up to something reasonable for a 55 year old man, I broke myself on the shores of black, purple, and brown belts. In...

Well put... I'm so broken getting thrown by anyone older than 12, even on our suspended floor, is not fun. I do BJJ because I can still roll and go to work the next day. Plus I always liked ne waza. I doubt I will ever compete at BJJ, I have too many bad joints and trust issues with guys...

Beginner stuff is what they are doing, plus, if you have crappy mats (common, especially in BJJ places, but not uncommon in Judo clubs), nage komi for big throws hurts and is not safe. Uchi Mata is hard, Ura Nage, well, it's hard too (doing and falling), neither are beginner throws.

BJJ has a lot of restrictions on what techniques can be used at what level of competition. To say "leg locks are legal in BJJ" is an overly broad statement. BJJ standup generally sucks, they might as well just start on their feet. IBJJF rules are as the bear said, worse than Judo. Go to a comp...
