At the very least I think there should be dubs considered for fighter bashing. Thus type of stuff legitimately pushes away great resources to the community and understandably makes them not want to be here.
Eddie is focused on finishing grad school and at most he trains 1 or 2 times a week these days. He’s definitely not going to post anything in this thread.
I think Craig Jones is going to blow people away over the next two years. Yeah he got silver at last adcc but it was largely due to strategic errors in the finals. He was clearly the most well rounded submission grappler in that division, and he cut through everyone along the way.
At the moment...
Feels. Went through one recently. It’s all good though. Lucky to still be here making laps around the sun. Feel young mentally. A little banged up physically. In some ways it really is a state of mind. Hope you feel good about things soon.
great job describing something that’s hard to describe. I have rolled with a few guys in gear and it’s pretty obvious. You’re right that they damn near feel like different human beings. Even when you make strong grips on their limbs in no-gi, it literally feels like their muscles are made out of...
Cliff notes from a recent video and post. Gordon said that he finds Pena difficult to negotiate contracts with and that he’s not wanting to put in the effort to make it happen unless they meet at ADCC. He feels that he’s on a 50+ match win-streak and that Pena looked disappointing against Galvao...
Gordon definitely trains a ton. His schedule a few years ago was crazy. He was getting up at 5am or so and training 2x a day (not counting open mat/shop talk/lifting weights) in Manhattan and then also teaching and rolling back in New Jersey during the same evenings.
I’ve rolled with him a...
I agree. I do think the Roger comparison isn’t 1 to 1 because I don’t think anyone built like Roger could even have Marcelo’s game to begin with. But I still agree.
I also put a heavy premium on creativity. I think the fact that Marcelo was innovating so heavily on his own during his prime...
To be fair there’s almost nothing to watch in recent years. Marcelo stopped uploading new rolls onto his website in 2017. Since then, FloGrappling released a roll of him with one of their brown belts 2 years ago, and Marcelo uploaded a roll just last month with Paul Schreiner. The former is...
Osoto Gari is one of my favorite throws but I think I’d be scared to do it. A guy I grew up with got one a fight outside a bar and the other dude fell and hit his head on the pavement and died. He’s actually doing some real prison time for it. I know that’s a freak occurrence that it very...
Giles is a physiotherapist that loves heel hooks. He posted a video here after Gordon blew his LCL on a kani basami entry on how it can be a risky movement and how to do it safely. Eddie Cummings did the sketchier version a lot in his career (the movement at 4:11 below). Garry Tonon always...
Some safe options for getting to the saddle from guard are
- putting their hands on the mat with x-guard, and then switching to reverse-x and then extending your legs against their hip to make them slide down into the saddle position.
- same as above, but from SLX instead of X. Use the foot...
I tend to avoid attacking with kani basami/scissor entries to the saddle against kneeling opponents. I do then sometimes. But usually only if it’s handed to me on a silver platter. Like if they try a leg weave with way too little pressure or with their hips way too high. Or if I’m rolling with...
I mean. I think the loyalty card is played too much and too much loyalty is often expected. But I can understand why two competing schools might prefer you just pick one. It shouldn’t matter but unfortunately it very well might matter to one or both schools. Dogma is real.
I think if you just...
I’m with this. But I also think the days of the Marcelo, Braulio, Roger, Rafa, Andre, and Pena types that can win adcc and mundials are drawing to a close.
There’s a few left like Lepri and JT for example that have the skills and a deep enough understanding to where they’ve can make the finals...
He didn’t have the best career outcome, but he got some cool wins and had a few fun fights. Maybe he didn’t live up to expectations but I’ll never understand how people that do a martial art (and know what it’s like to put it on the line) are so comfortable to just sit back and say another elite...
