    Ricardo Liborio vs Rickson Gracie

Do you think it would have been different in 2010 when this thread was created?

Anyone here mastered the hopping uchimata?

I've certainly seen beginners that focus on getting their body position right at the apex of the technique but don't actually follow though and finish the throw - its the hands that are going to finish the throw here with this type of uchi-mata, otherwise the opponent can just hop along with you.

Anyone here mastered the hopping uchimata?

Are you actually using the sleeve hand to rotate them and finish the throw?

    Training different disciplines

Personally, assuming you're a complete beginner and the timetables allow - I would recommend sticking to one striking and one grappling art - otherwise I think you'll be overwhelmed. You need time and focus on getting basics down.

Is boxing + judo a good base VS pure BJJ/wrestling

I don't want to do them a disservice - they were running an open randori session, so some of the folks there wouldn't have trained under their rules - and they do certainly train leg grabs there. But it wasn't some leg grabbing fest people imagine 'traditional judo' to be.

Is boxing + judo a good base VS pure BJJ/wrestling

It was a Judo for All randori session that I went to - but as I said, none of the higher grades seemed to any leg grabbing.

Is boxing + judo a good base VS pure BJJ/wrestling

I've only seen one club here in the UK that still allowed leg grabs in sparring - and even then it was only done by the low grades because the higher grades are used to sticking to competition rules. Leg grabs only seem to be trained for the purposes of grading from what I've seen, and never...

    Greco or Judo for kids??

When it comes to kids I don't think the art is as important than the atmosphere, environment and approach to teaching. Even as a Judoka, I'd rather send my kid to a Greco club that had a well considered and catered for kids program over a Judo club that didn't. Then if you're thinking long...

What belt to start your own school?

Depends on where you live - here in London, you can find very good black belts in pretty much every area, so a purple belt might be hard pressed to establish themselves - whereas out in the sticks, a purple belt might be the best guy around for miles. In terms of promotion - its generally...

    Horrendous Judo Class in Taiwan

I don't disagree with the sentiment of what you're saying - but I would argue that 'the highest levels' is actually the worst representation of safety - because the act of falling safely is the same act that will lose them the contest.

Advantages of Japanese Jiu Jitsu vs BJJ ?

The problem is Japanese jiu jitsu is that any random person with the most basic of competency can (and has) opened clubs teaching 'insert name here' jiu-jitsu - so there is zero quality control - you could end up training anything from the most bullshido of self defence to something semi-legitimate.

    Curriculum Help

There are a lot of things to consider before you even getting into details: - are you the head coach overseeing the entire program, or are supporting another coach by teaching a few lessons? - what is the typical size of your class, what is the frequency of the classes, what level are the...

Did Kayla Harrison need to break Dandois' arm?

I've only watched the clip you provided, so not seen another angle or slow motion etc. But it looked to me like the break happened pretty easily, as soon as she started to put her hips into it - so I don't think it was malicious - and some women especially can have a lot of flexibility so I...

What do you think of Travis Stevens? (USA JUDO)

They are never going to purposely divide Judo in two - nor would have have many any sense as the leg grab ban was specifically to help differentiate Judo from the Olympic wrestling styles.

What do you think of Travis Stevens? (USA JUDO)

I can't talk to the internal politics because I'm not based there or particularly clued up on it - but Judo in the US seems very fractured, and I've never heard anyone from the US say anything positive about any of their (is it three?) national governing bodies. It seems there is a lot of...

What do you think of Travis Stevens? (USA JUDO)

Sounds like a national governing body thing, not an IJF thing - because you only pay dues to the NGB, the IJF don't collect checks from clubs or individuals. I don't think the IJF is perfect - but it seems to me from the outside (I'm UK based) that American Judo has an internal politics problem...

    Is BJJ useless for kids?

How much of avoiding bullying comes from the kids just having confidence in themselves rather than being able to fight. and I think its strange you're calling the parents 'pussy parents' because they are taking someone up on a free offer of some BJJ classes. Judo and BJJ are the same at the...

All wrestling moves/takedowns are performed at "an angle" - agree/disagree?

All wrestling moves/takedowns are performed at "an angle" - agree/disagree?

That is a specific fighting stance of RvL - look at a classic tomoe-nage from RvR. Do you mean kuzushi is an over complication? because its just a Japanese word that means off balance - I think that is as simple as it gets when it comes to speaking about what makes a takedown work - get them...
