Update:
After the pandemic, I went back to wrestling and essentially gave up bjj. I now wrestle at two wrestling clubs meant for kids up to high school.
I have improved tremendously. I can put the beat down on most of the kids my weight and heavier. Some of the kids who have been wrestling...
My instructor got MORE students after the pandemic. A major school, which he had ties to, shut down during the pandemic. As a result, he gained a lot of new students who were looking for another place to train after the main school shut down.
Personally, I trained about once a month with one...
I wrestle a couple times a week at a high school. I'm able to do this because I met a kid who happens to be plugged into the local wrestling community.
I get that he's been doing BJJ since he was a wee lad. With that said, the guy last time I heard was a full-time law student.
While I imagine his classes are likely to be still online, how does he have the time to beat these guys? What is he doing differently in his training?
So I swear I'm not trying to resurrect the "why is 10th planet still not a force" debate again.
I'm under the understanding Mikey has not trained in nogi nearly as long as Geo has. Why was Mikey able to pull off such a dominant performance?
Wow I've been looking on more formal instruction on how to do ugly triangles. They are just such a strong control position.
I've always liked his demeanor and technique in the videos I've seen of him. He seems to have a very simple game that is easy to understand and implement.
Just curious...
I think the word "potential" here is pretty important. Gordon only looks like he's getting better. He continues to make everything look easy. Don't crucify me for saying this but he continues to humble himself by taking matches with anyone - even people who don't "deserve" to have a match with...
2 weeks ago I beach wrestled with a guy and got the shit kicked out of me.
A few days ago I wrestled with the same guy and a different guy who has 30lbs on me and did much better (e.g. Lasted way longer on the feet and was able to score points on both).
The difference is I focused on...
I got my BB a year ago and have rolled a handful of times since. I did some beach BJJ with a guy who wrestled in high school and was having a ton of trouble with him. I sympathize.
Damn Oldguy.
I remember reading your old posts. It was by far some of the most inspiring content I've read on this website if not the internet
I'm 30 years old. I also ran everyday, was lifting weights, stretching, and very close to your dimensions as well. Recently wrestled on the beach and...
Galvao has nothing left to prove. Nothing needs to be said. His legacy is cemented.
He is chipping away at the very foundation which he built. His recent cringy, rapper-esque ig persona is destroying his image and even worse, perhaps exposing who he was at the core all along. We've seen...
I used to practice with a JC wrestling team. One of the guys on the JC team was a Canadian who was nationally ranked (he was around 18 at the time). While I'm unaware of his exact situation, he chose to move down to my city so that he could train at a RTC of a top 10 wrestling HS in the USA...
You can still make progress but you have to put deliberate about your practice.
With guys better than you, you can get better on an almost subconscious level; you are clearly getting beat in some way (passed, submitted, escaped) so it's easy to pinpoint what your bad at. Even if you're not...
BJJ: I will always attempt an anaconda or assassin choke - I just love these chokes too much.
Wrestling:
1. I'll snap him down and run around. If he follows me one direction, I'll fling him with my arm and go the opposite direction.
2. If he's good at standing back up I'll snap him forward...
Something that is pretty fascinating to me is the disparity between my top and bottom game. I put a lot more thought into my bottom game and it's still difficult for me to do. I put almost no thought into my top game (passing, control and submissions) and the top version of me would easily crush...
