They're (understandably) defensive because they feel it discredits what they and their family have done. They won't ever understand that actions in the past continue to reverberate to the present since they can only see it through the lens of their own disparagement.
Things don't exist in a vacuum. There's a very good reason why black people are distrustful of police historically. Also, they didn't deserve to get their life taken given the circumstances.
