‘Worse than gymnastics’: Lawsuit makes explosive sex abuse allegations involving USA Diving

That’s the cost. Or do you expect the people accused not to fight back? Or are we reversing course on 1000 guilty men go free...?

Sorry, that doesn't make any sense. People who are not part of the case dragging the character of some woman who they don't know through the mud has nothing to do with the accused fighting back.

Guy in Ames, Iowa rapes some girl. People who are not the guy in Ames, Iowa say the woman invited it. Her co-workers treat her differently. Her neighbors look at her as complicit. None of those social costs involve the defendant fighting back in a court of law.

Is this unique to these crimes? The only way this ever changes at all is for people to come forward, which is happening but has already gone too far (so the pendulum will swing back a bit)

That is indeed the cost and it is perfectly reasonable for a victim to say that they are unwilling to pay it and instead move along with their life. The victim has no legal or moral obligation to seek justice.

Rape/sexual assault is literally the only crimes where the "well, she wanted it" sort of response happens.

Is this unique to these crimes? Pretty close to it. When someone gets robbed, people don't generally accuse the victim of inviting robbery because of poor moral character. When innocent people get murdered, people don't generally say that the victim invited murder because of things that happened involving completely different people in completely different circumstances. When a powerful person abuses power to screw the little guy, people don't say that the little guy wanted to get screwed over for personal gain later.

Does it happen sometimes but not with the frequency that it's applied to women/girls that allege sexual assault short of knockdown, physically abusive, rape.

It's simply absurd to insist that a person who has been victimized should expose themselves to additional abuse before society stops abusing them. If you want women to press charges then people need to make sure that the environment exists that encourages them do so.

I've seen it SOME by family/friends of the accused in Assaultive DV cases where I've heard the response once of "she threw a pan at him what did she think he was going to do? Hug her for it?"

What Pan said above, but I'll leave this since I took the time to type it on my phone....

When was the last time a murder or burgalry victim was accused of "wanting it" or "asking for it" because they left their door umlocked? How many burgalry victims are ostracized my family and community because they robbed? The very fact that these crimes are different us why we have a sexual predator registry and not a general assault registry.

It's not always avoidable. Coaches, teachers, private music lessons, one-on-one sessions with a medical professional, if the child is making a statement to the police, counseling with social worker or member of clergy, etc. These are just examples off the top of my head. The reason that this story is news is because there are positions in society that are given in exchange for public trust, and when that trust is abused, it affects the way we collectively view the relationship. The relationship between a coach and their athlete is supposed to be one of trust to help the athlete grow to fulfill a physical goal. This was clearly abused here.
All of this is preventable by having a friend or family member present when a strange man has to be alone with your young daughter. Simple.

In the future if I ever have a daughter, there is no way she's ever gonna be alone in these situations after reading this story and countless others.

Threads like this never fail to expose people for what they really are.

Point taken. The difference, I think is the victim is literally accused of wanting. "Isn't it true that you like rough sex?" "A former boyfriend said he spanked you so clearly you like to be hit during sex?" and so on...

I agree, but, sadly friends an family members are statistically more likely to be the abuser than is stranger. I have a daughter and can say that the best you can hope for is to make good decisions with the information available. But, for instance, you no actual real time control over whether a teacher asks your 12yo daughter to stay after class one day "to help hang some party decorations."

I am not sure exactly your point, but for clarification.

“Two former USA Diving athletes have sued the sport’s national governing body, claiming the organization failed to act when the athletes accused a former coach of coercing and forcing them into frequent sex, according to the Indianapolis Star.”

If you do not see the point quoting the OP on her being sent home (while the coach remained) from a swim-meet where she told the head coach (ie, not the perv coach) about it, -as reply to your statement "This will be a civil trial claiming US Diving was negligent in some way", then I cannot help you.

Yeah that’s the cost
Doesn’t change you have to do it
My ex wife and I did all sorts of shit, porn level expert
If she claimed rape I would point it out but if I did something illegal i should go to jail only way that happens is if she presses charges

In some of those situations, you legally aren’t allowed to be there with her unless she requests your presence.

The idea that a college aged athlete could believe a coach has the right to refuse to train players based on unwillingness to engage in sex acts is a tough one to swallow (no pun intended).

Agreed, though possible I guess.

More of those gymnast should have filed police reports.

I got my ass and wiener rubbed by a 45 year old lady, not to hot, when I was 16 and went in for some lower back pain b.s. I didn't mind. Now I know that men enjoy sexual things and girls do not, but I swear on my soul that happened to me, and the reason I didn't report it was I didn't care.

To the gymnast that DID tell police, and had them do nothing, THAT girl deserves the bucks, and that police force should be shamed.
