NCAA Wrestling

NCAA wrestling returns this week. Who and what is everyone excited for this season?

Coon and Snyder are both gone so heavyweight opens up. Gable Stevenson as a freshman should be interesting to watch. Tanner Hall should be interesting too.

Penn St is still the team to beat with Bo, Nolf, Hall, and VIncenzo returning.
No more IMAR

It seems these days that there are always some amazing incoming freshman, and this year is no different. Fable and Fix come to mind as two freshman that I am very excited to see. I think Gable could win the NCAA title which would really be something as a true freshman at HW.

Excited to see Ashnualt and Suriano in the same lineup this year. Also excited to see Glasgow make his debut although I think he might be a little to small for 165. Got my tickets already to RU vs OSU in Jan. Hoping for Fix vs. Suriano.

I think Gable is going to destroy the weightclass.

The kid ragdolled Tanner Hall like he was nothing at WTTs and beat Dom Bradley

Also on the wrestling/MMA horizon, blue chip MMA prospect Deron Winn will be facing Tom Lawlor on the undercard of Chuck vs Tito 3. Quite a huge step up for Winn but I still expect him to win impressively. And I hold Lawlor's skills in pretty high regard.

Might not be the same filthy tom, considering that hes been focusing so much time on his new pro wrestling career

It is indeed the filthy Tom Lawlor. Intermat reported on it. Lawlor himself has some pretty solid wrestling credentials.

Thats not what i meant. Im sure it is the tom lawler. But i dont think you'll get the same quality fighter considering that hes been splitting his time and attention on 2 different career avenues

Oh, right. Duh. I think if lawlor is in shape he has enough experience to put up a good showing. But Winn is just a damn powerhouse. Perfect for MMA.

My picks for the NCAA this year...

125 - Lee
133 - Gross
141 - Yianni if he stays, Eierman if he goes up.
149 - If Yianni stays at 141, who the hell knows.
157 - Nolf
165 - Cenzo
174 - Zahid if he stays, Hall if he jumps
184 - Martin if Zahid stays, Zahid if he jumps
197 - Nickal
Fatties - Gable

Agree almost completely. Maybe Suriano over Gross. Yanni is going 41 but he wont be back until after Christmas I believe. Im going Ashnault at 149. I just want Rutgers to get a champ. Them becoming competitive will make things more fun.

I am curious to see Nickal at 197. He never seemed very big for 84 so I suppose its possible Kolin Moore could out muscle him but I doubt it.

Cornell's team takes a hit with Darmstadt out for the year but they are still returning 3 all americans and a champ while bring in Aruja at 133 and Freddy Stroker at 157. They could be a problem for a lot of teams.

Is Fix going 125 or 133? I think he takes 133 if he goes there.

All of the Worlds matches are now up on UWW’s YouTube page so I’ve been catching up on matches I didn’t see. Man, that Russian Taylor faced was an absolute brute. Guy was strong as hell.

Fix is a freestyle specialist. I don't think he's going to be quite as successful in college as most expect. I think he'll definitely be a 4x AA but it wouldn't surprise me if he only brings home 1 title.

I think calling him a specialist is a bit much.

He's obviously stronger in Free because of his trap armed gut but is he's still a stud in neutral.

Is he weak on bottom or something like that?

I cant even rememebr the last time I saw him wrestle folk. I dont recall him having a significant issue on bottom but I also dont recall him having a go to tilt from top. He will be better than pretty much anyone at 133 from neutral though.

I'd like to see him at 133. Its better for OK State and its better for us. Gross, Suriano, Fix, Micic, Wilson, deSanto, Lizak, Pletcher and Arujua all at one weight? Im in.

Im still really high on Micic from last season, he had a fantastic tournament.

Basically where I'm at. I don't recall him ever wrestling someone near his level in folk so it's hard to say.

But I definitely think it's better for OKST if he goes 133. He'll be a top level guy where ever he goes. But I think Picc is maybe top 4 at 125 but fringe AA at 133. Fix going 33 is better for OKST imo.

Wow, nice comeback. We can do pretty well on the Women's cadet/junior level, everything goes badly.

I am still sad about Koblova though...

Some of the "ethnic" Russians are pretty good at Greco though, at least we have those guys lol. Like Surkov and Topoev, although I believe they are not 100% ethnic Russian

(kinda funny) a full ethnic breakdown of the Russian teams from Twitter:

I take it -
Dude in Beefeeter hat = Caucasus-ians (& I think lighter skin = Ossetian, darker skin = Dagistani/Chechen, darkest skin = Armenian?)
Blonde person = Russians (not sure if any difference implied between tanned/untanned)
Brunette girls - Mongols/Eurasians
Yellow face with narrow eyes - Mongol dude (lol)
