$716 billion defense budget.......Wow...

but have you ever heard a politician bring up science or r&D ??

In general terms yes but not specifically no.
They do provide grants etc but rarely work to develop something from scratch.

I really don't mind that they don't.

R&d budgets need to be controlled by people with skin in the game. Until ready to use product is created pollies wouldn't know an iPhone from a perpetual motion machine.

My issue is the lack of ROI assessment by impartial parties on projects. So we get bridges of little use in swing seats and no highly useful bridge in a safe seat.

The collective bargaining power of the US in a universal system could help bring prices down. You guys are getting raped.

A better analogy would be they're getting raped in the arse every day, without lube, and they've fallen in love with the rapist.

Only the derpiest of kool aid drinkers would believe the US military is ever ‘degraded’. It’s the same buzz word equivalency shit I heard when I was in. We operate 900x the hardware anyone else does but 5% needs maintenance holy fuck we’ve ‘degraded’ our capabilities. JFC...

At some point it becomes a net negative. If you cant destroy your enemies with an army 5-10x their size, what good would making it 20x the size be? Obviously you are just trying to hide some general or operational flaw that would cause you lose in a 1:1 battle.

Also, other countries could be trying to bankrupt Murka as they know Murkans will sacrifice their economy in order to keep pushing ever-increasing military budgets.

And I was kind of having fun mocking the thought of you preparing for WW3. Don't take it too seriously, gramps.
You guys are creeps and this isn't the first time.

It's disturbing to see all the progressives act like this. All of that progressive bitterness doesnt need to be posted
in threads.

Good day sir.

As an E-4 I'm sure you knew all about it.

Despite how edgy you’re trying to be, the e4 mafia probably has more insight in the actual day to day operations and capabilities of a given unit than any officer below colonel. You want to know where your problems lie? Ask an E6 or E7. Those are the guys wrangling info out of your corporals specialists and senior airmen

You don' t need to spam "progressive bitterness" and "bitter minorities" and that stupid facepalm smiley in every thread either.

But here you are.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump, in his first State of the Union, asked Congress to “fully fund” the U.S. military, but he will have to navigate the Capitol Hill cross-currents that bedeviled the last administration.

Making his case, Trump acknowledged that America faces, “rogue regimes, terrorist groups, and rivals like China and Russia.

“In confronting these dangers, we know that weakness is the surest path to conflict, and unmatched power is the surest means of our defense,” Trump said. “For this reason, I am asking the Congress to end the dangerous defense sequester and fully fund our great military.”

Sequestration, the enforcement mechanism for discretionary spending caps, has become publicly despised in Congress — and yet lawmakers have been unable to get rid of it. Instead lawmakers have taken to easing the caps for massive omnibus appropriations.

And Trump faces congressional dynamics that seem to have only gotten less friendly and more gridlocked in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters they’ve made good progress in negotiations for a 2018 ominbus, but offered no details.

The new wrinkle in negotiations this year is that spending negotiations are complicated by Democratic demands for a fix for immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children.

Candidate Trump campaigned on ambitious plans for a military buildup to 355 ships, 1,200 Air Force fighter jets and thousands more Marines. Since, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has said in Capitol Hill testimony that those plans require sustained defense spending growth through 2023.

Notably, Trump made no mention of any of that in his address Tuesday. Instead, he focused on nuclear weapons, saying, “we must modernize and rebuild our nuclear arsenal, hopefully never having to use it, but making it so strong and so powerful that it will deter any acts of aggression by any other nation or anyone else.”

A government report predicted Obama-era plans to upgrade the U.S. nuclear arsenal would cost $1.2 trillion over 30 years. An early peek at Trump’s plans show them as more expansive, with controversy swirling around plans to develop low-yield tactical weapons.

Considering I spent time as an E4 and then moved up the chain I can say with complete certainty you are wrong. The "mafia" spends more time trying to find short cuts and complaining than doing actual work. The idea that they have any detailed knowledge about OR rates, supply chains, lifecycles, or serious maintenance is laughable. Most of them can't balance a checkbook.

The fact that think a Colonel has more insight into the unit than an XO or CDR tells me exactly who you were in the unit. The COL stops by for formations and promotions. The rest of his time is spent in meetings. Or adjudicating Article 15's for E4's who keep fucking up.

"DefenSe" budget
And you guys are basicly carrying most of the NATO members, for which i'm thankful but at the same time ashamed of our own (lack of) military spending

Ah, I always mix those two words up. I'm not American nor from a NATO state BTW.

Well most NATO members are carrying the US refugee burden. So i´m sure it evens out.

Yeah.... i'd rather "waste" that money on defense

#MeToo

However it is what it is. And especially western europe are taking massive financial burdens in regards to refugees in large part created by the US.

fine by me

i'd rather it go to people that actually perform a task for a paycheck, then people who get free money for NOT earning keep
<{cruzshake}>
Why are the choices always only shit, or vomit?
I don't understand why so many people go this route, as if we only can go full on Commie, or full on Neo conservative.

The US doesn't fucking need to spend $700+ billion on the military, and it wouldn't (and isn't, nor ever has) spend $700+ billion on welfare.
This is a waste of fucking money, and all sides should be outraged by it.

Education , health, infrastructure, and technology are the pathways to success, not dropping bombs and flying expensive ass jets and drones over deserts to kill goat fuckers.
