Aljo Sterling calls UFC new offer "Laughable" Doesn't have enough $ to go see Doctor

The UFC is gonna find their legit talentpool being thinned out by Bellator because of these nickle and diming business practices. In the process they’re gonna create a legit competitor for themselves.

I mean I never cared for Bellator and now I’m planning on watching the Rory vs Moose card.

Bellator, who wanted a guy to fight for $250/$250? <45>

The UFC pay their bums a lot better than Bellator does.

They pay a good amount for potential stars and champs. Not to mention that he can have sponsors over there.

Bellator could have got Sterling if they were willing to outbid the UFC. They didn't. And go look at TJ's Instagram. It's wall to wall sponsors.

Sage likely makes more from just his Labrada sponsorship than anyone in Bellator.

Yeah, but we’re talking about Aljo now, not Sage. In Aljo’s situation it might make sense to switch. We obviously dont know if Bellator has made any offers

Perhaps he should get a job doing something he is good at?

Stay in school kids. Seriously, you expected to get rich off of fist-fighting?

Go find another job bro

How is 20/20 not enough to see a doctor? If you fight three times a year, you're pulling in 60K, and that's assuming you lose every fight. Sounds decent to me.

(Yeah, yeah, "training camp fee" and all that. It's still a good amount of money.)
<{poor?}>

158k if he wins all three fights and that’s not counting Reebok, discretionary bonus, and potential POTN bonuses. Not too bad. IMO he wants star money but I agree he should take one year to focus on winning these three fights and promoting himself better, and the next contract shoot for the star money

The UFC expects people to make a name for themselves and then they will get paid but its the UFC's job to make a name for their fighters. Surely the UFC must be making sooooo much profit if they are able to get people to sign for this much money.

hes talking out of his ass. ufc covers all medical expenses for fighters, so not only can he see a doctor, he can receive world class healthcare for free.

And taxes.

They also get fucked by being individual contractors. That means along with their income tax, they pay 15% to social security and Medicare vs 7.65 for the rest of the population. That means just for federal income tax and social security Medicare he'd have to pay $24k alone if he makes 60k before deductions. 60k is not a lot for the self employed in America, hell even 100k doesn't seem like enough

You're forgetting that UFC fighters are not "employees" they are independent contractors, meaning they foot ALL of the taxes on their end. Since they are not employees, they also have to seek health insurance independently.

Figure monthly how much a fighter pays to train at a gym. Then figure how much they pay to dedicate a team to their fight camp. Then figure bringing in sparring partners from outside if they are at the elite level. The UFC only covers the flight for one coach for an event, so the fighter is paying if he wants anyone else to come.

Fighters also need a lot more maintenance. Factor in physical therapy, sports massage, diet/nutrition(ist).

Then remember that the UFC is the highest level of the sport, and the athletes are the very best MMA fighters in the world.

Then remember that most fighters have less than a 10 year window to make money for the rest of their lives.

Then factor in long term damage from an MMA career.

Then consider 90k here in LA is considered low income.

60k gross income still sound good?

UFC pays injury insurance.
Not full medical

its better than every other org, but still if it is not fight or training related, it is on him

Taxes, fees, camp dues, management, all add up to nearly 50% of your fight purse depending on what his deals are with his camp and his manager if he has one. Not to mention each state and country are different on taxes. His 40k win that leaves him with a black eye and a broken nose could leave him with less than 10k after it’s all said and done.

This is a cutthroat business. He isn’t exactly a star or even someone that can main event a card. According to fight metrics he made 36k in his fight against Moraes. And made 36/36 in his last fight against Brett Johns. Obviously, I wouldn’t take less than that, so a 20/20 would certainly be insulting. But he is a top prospect so you have to throw him a bone or let him walk.

John Cholish estimates 8-12K per training camp. ....
That’s too much. I’m not disputing the estimate, just the necessity of a 12k fight camp. If you are bringing in big bucks, go for it. Fly in all these specialists, go all out. But if you’re making 20k and you are paying 12k for a camp... you are a fool. If the fighter feels it’s absolutely necessary to have such an expensive camp to reach that next level, they have to realize they may be upside down for a few fights until they can renegotiate. Sounds like the real money is in running a gym that houses top level fighters. Can you imagine how much Javier Mendes is making?

ufc has insurance fr their fighters

Fights 3 times a year and wins 2/3 of fights that is 100k + bottom tier Reebok money at $7500 + other sponsors outside the cage guestimating at $15k = bare min of $1225k per year before taxes, camp fees, and living costs and he is at around $60k per year. I think he is fibbing a bit on not being able to see a doctor but I can also see how he would be upset at such low figures for a top tier prize fighter.
Taxes alone bring him down to about 60K a year. An elite training camp is probably 10k per fight, he's probably clearing a sweet 30k, assuming he wins 2/3 fights. If he loses all of his fights he'll probably bring home about a weeks worth of Wendy's value meals for his family.

20/20 == 40k
23/23 == 46k
26/26 == 52k

That is 138. Unless I read the post wrong, I'm confused how you got to 158k.

He's world ranked with 10 fights in the UFC, going 7-3. Two of those losses were controversial split decisions. That is really abysmal pay considering. That is jabroni money.

Statistically UFC fighters don't actually get a full 3 fights per year on average, and they are paying off the top for flying around corners, training expenses, and buying their own health insurance.

Either his starting guarantee pay should be higher, or the elevator should be substantially better. From a risk -vs- reward value perspective, it would make more sense for Aljo to become a plumber. Granted there is nothing wrong with a good trade job, but you would think professional athletes fighting int he pinnacle of the sport, with overall success, could do better.

Go and become bellator champ, ufc will bring him back for double the money
