I respect Karate but the kata bullshit drives me nuts. I think that's actually what hinders it from being more popular. In things like Muay thai, you can skip straight to the practical stuff.

You're ragging on kata, but doesn't muay thai have it's own version (of sorts) of kata ? The wai kru dance. They spend a good deal of time learning and practicing, but it is pretty much worthless for any kind of actual combat and nobody wants to watch it. And before you go on about the wai kru being traditional/spiritual, etc - isn't kata pretty much the same ?
