I am. He seems to have a the perfect mix of versatile submissions with solid wrestling. Great scrambles with solid positioning.

When is it?

I believe he’s going to kick some ass, Gordon Ryan is going to make some noise as well, at least if they both have relative good chins, which we will only find out when they step in the cage

His first opponent is definitely a gimme, but generally speaking I'm excited to see what he does. I think his grappling style will play very well in MMA.

Looking forward to it. Definitely a grappling style that should transition more easily.

The more I watch BJJ guys transition- if they can't chain wrestle they are in big trouble. Everyone should be looking at Demain Maia's evolution as a guide for what it takes to be able to implement your bjj game. Fundamental striking goes without saying, but takedowns off the fence and wrestling / riding should be #1 priority.

This weekend.

Will he pull guard?

He's pretty good in the scramble. As long as he doesn't suffer from the old grappler syndrome where he feels the need to prove his striking

I think as an entry level his wrestling is way beyond Maia's up to half way through his career. I think Tonons wrestling will transfer well and I like that he plays an aggressive well rounded scramble based game.

Honestly, I feel no matter how amazing of a grappler you are, it will all boil down to how well you can take a punch. No one likes to get hit, but some people just take it much worse and are so afraid of being hit they end up being too distracted by that.

I hope he does well. He might end up being the (sane) version of Palhares in MMA and that would be a treat to watch.

leg submission specialist might be a dime a dozen now in nogi BJJ comps, but they are still ultra rare in MMA and you can see how far Palhares got with just that. Tonnon is even better.

Seeing how well Kron Gracie has done in MMA has me super excited for any aggressive, world class, submission grappler coming into MMA. For whatever reason though, they seem to compete pretty infrequently for at least the first few years. Maybe this is bc its hard to get fights or other obligations but Id like to see someone like Tonon come to MMA and hit the ground running.

For the vast majority of guys they are not going to be able to get their wrestling to the level of a prime Damian Maia. He put in an incredible amount of time and work into becoming the wrestler he is/was. Like fully embraced the grind and sought out the cream of the crop of wrestling training partners and coaches. We have seen other Bjj'ers with very good takedowns, quite a few, but none of them had the fundamentals of wrestling down so well like Maia.

I completely agree with all your post.

Super curious to see another leglock specialist, in particular one of his caliber, go at it.

I'm extremely excited but I really hope he has developed a striking game. Being one dimensional just doesn't work at the highest levels

One of the reasons I think Tonon will do well is that he *isn't* really a leg submission specialist. He's definitely fantastic at them, but he's equally good at taking the back and choking, kimuras, and catching guillotines. I would actually be pretty surprised if we saw him leg lock anyone early in his career, I expect he'll attack much more with chokes just because the wrestling heavy MMA grappling metagame opens up a lot more chances to get on someone's neck than to their legs.

That's true, but luckily for him Garry is a long way from the highest level yet. Though his wrestling is already decent and I'm sure he's working hard to improve it, not being a dummy and having the examples of guys like Maia and Shields to follow.
