Anyone have sleep apnea?

I'm on the CPAP. Very irritating at first but nowadays it's a comfort to wear. Can't say I feel any different but on occasions where I don't use the mask I feel bad the next day.

Weight isn't always a factor in sleep apnea. I'm 6"3' 200 lbs and have it. I was put on a machine and always tore it off in my sleep.

The handful of times I slept a full night on one, I slept really well but i tried all sorts of masks and none would fit right and would leak all the time.

And waking up with red lines all over your face is never fun.

Man, PLEASE use your machine. It is uncomfortable but you'll get used to it. Also, you'll be so much more active that you'll wake up enough to have those lines gone ASAP.

You DON'T want to be the guy who falls asleep at the wheel and harms himself, or worse… Someone else.

Over diagnosed. The doctor I saw at this sleep clinic was trying to tell me I had it even before I did a sleep study. I walked out and never went back.

Recently I found out from an osteopath that I had issues with my sternum (three bones doing all different things), due to either a bicycle accident as a child or adult, a car crash or a judo injury, which may have explained why I was having breathing issues. My collarbone was even jammed into my sternum, which was against an artery that goes up into my neck. My GP diagnosed me with mild asthma as a teen. I am already breathing better thanks to the osteopath.

Lesson here: everyone try to justify their profession. If your intuition tells you something isn't right with what you are being told, do some more investigation.

Did you ever end up doing a sleep study?

I’ve used a machine for years and it is the single most life altering thing any doctor has done for me.

I’m fit by any standard, but most of America is overweight. Overweight people tend to have sleep apnea. People that drool in their sleep especially should get checked.

I may have it kind of worried. Try losing weit but yes go to sleep clinic

I have been having an awful time being tired all the time and sleeping all day when I don't have to be awake for something. I'm getting tested for sleep apnea. Was wondering if anyone has experience with it? Thanks for your time.

Get an adjustable base for your mattress. The incline opens up the airways. They're more affordable now than ever. Big retailers like Mattress Firm even give them away for free some promotions lol.

I'd be asking myself why I need a machine all of a sudden if you are in shape. It doesn't make sense that someone would need a machine to sleep if the body is optimally balanced. Doctors are trained to treat symptoms for the most part and not address the body as a whole.

No I didn't bother. The doctor was trying to sell me the device before I even had the study. That's why I refused to follow-up.

I brought up the other stuff about my sternum and artery that had some blockage from my collarbone being jammed up against it as an example of other things that were going on. I am breathing better since then.

For me it's totally about my being overweight. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and wore the CPAP for a few months, then lost some weight (as I had more energy to exercise after work) and didn't need it anymore. If I let myself go I'll need it again, I've been through a few different phases of needing the CPAP for quality sleep because I let myself get overweight. I keep the machine in my closet in case I ever need it in the future, but just keeping my weight down is the key- by now I can look at my belly and know how close I am to needing it lol.

I highly recommend using the CPAP if you need it. I was absolutely miserable and frankly in a pretty dark place with constant sleep deprivation. It affected every single aspect of my life. Do what you need to do in order to lead a quality happy life man

I found out that here in Ontario, if a doctor puts you on the darth vader machine and you don’t use it, they report you to the Ministry of Transport and they can suspend your license as they assume that you don’t get enough sleep to drive safely. The machine sends data back so they can tell if you use it or not.
WTF is that true?

I was going to have a sleep test, but I had my tonsils removed due to having strep throat so often. Ever since then, I feel like I don't have issues at all. I had really big tonsils.
Same thing happened to me. I breath a lot better without my stupid tonsils.

I was able to do my sleep study at home. My wife helped wire me up and they monitored me over a 3 night period. I also opted for an adjustable bed to raise my head up a bit. No more sleepy days, better focus and better stamina in the gym. Honest to God, it changed my life.

Man! It's like I was wearing eyeglasses with Vaseline smeared all over them. Now EVERYTHING is soooo much better!

I had it, after removing the tonsils it seems to be gone, or at least the last sleeping test was regular

Same for me as @NewS. Had it in high school due to a defect. Had my tonsils and a piece of my uvula removed to get rid of it. I was misdiagnosed with narcolepsy and a variety of other sleep disorders before they realized it was apnea. Sleep studies are very annoying, you get woken up like every hour and they make you stay awake for a period of time. Definitely exaustig. I’ve had three of them.

Just mentioned this in another thread but I would have it when withdrawing off booze. Would just randomly wake up gasping for air. Scary shit

I've had the machine for years. And if you're still not sleeping, it doesn't hurt to be tested.

Specialists are not your PCM. Specialists address the problem within their scope. Some people have OSA. Don't try to dissuade others from seeing a specialist though.Any doctor proven to be falsifying records to push diagnosis would lose their medical license.

I had sleep apnea bad,I couldn't stay awake for nothing. Not even my kid. I lost 170 pounds, no longer have it. CPAP sucked!

sleep apnea is so grossly overdiagnosed it's almost a pure scam now.

Big CPAP wants to convince everyone they have sleep apnea so they can sell more CPAP machines.

The number of people that have it so bad that it's actually endangering their lives is very small.

If you use your machine then it is deemed a controlled condition. If you don’t use it, then you are subject to a medical review.

Yeah, I don't think you're understanding what I'm trying to get across here. I thought I made it pretty clear in my previous posts, but I'll clarify some more with a little more information.

I was sent to a sleep specialist by a neurologist. I've had a number of concussions and my sleep has not been right since a car accident in 2001. It never made any sense to go to a sleep specialist to begin with when my problems stem from TBI but the neurologist wanted me to and I did not see the harm in going. I live in Canada, so it does not cost me extra to go see a sleep specialist. In an earlier post I mentioned (and this was only in the last month) I saw an osteopath who noticed my sternum bones (there are three of them) were going every which way, plus a collarbone jammed up against the sternum restricting an artery that runs up the neck to the brain. Do you think that may affect breathing to a degree? I could have had that these issues for decades and I wasn't even aware of it. Having a sleep device to help me breathe while sleeping is not going to solve anything. My body was not balanced.

You can defend doctors all you want, but I've had too many instances where they have been wrong about things going on in my body outside of the things I've listed. People don't lose the ability to breathe all of a sudden without something else going on in the body. A machine isn't going to fix your breathing. We're designed to be dependent on a man-made device to sleep? If you're some fat fuck with all your organs smushed together, lose weight by eliminating processed foods and sugary drinks from your diet. If weight isn't the issue look elsewhere; there is something going on in the body. Treat the root case and not symptoms is what I'm trying to get across to readers. Better yet, trust that inner voice when you sense something is bullshit and walk away from it and do more digging. The bullshit in this case was that the doctor wanted to sell me a sleep device even before I had the sleep study done.

Do you see why someone may have a problem with a doctor trying to sell a device even before the sleep study is completed? A sleep study can show how deep your sleep is, but is a machine going to address why one isn't sleeping to being with? How long before they sell portable oxygen tanks for people to walk around with during the day because a doctor prescribed it?

Doctors make incorrect diagnosis all the time. They only know what they are indoctrinated in. We're told that we live in the pinnacle of health care, yet people are sicker than ever. Sadly, you have to be your own doctor in a way with the way the medical community is presently. I didn't live in that era, but at one time doctors were paid if you got better. That would be a much better system to go back to.

Sleep specialists can diagnose far more than just OBS.

I get it, you had a bad experience with one doctor... But in the end you still needed an Osteopath to address the issue.

Quit telling people not to trust doctors. That’s how we get all these morons shoving coffee up their asses because they read it’s healthy.

No, you don't get it and it's really apparent. I've had suspect experiences with a bunch of doctors. I realize they are human and only know what they know. Everyone should take control of their own health and not only rely on someone else when they may not have the answer to the problem. I am not you and believe everything I am told.

BTW, I still have a GP and I hardly need to see him.

And yeah, I sought out an osteopath on my own when traditional medical did not have the answers. Do you have a point? Why didn't any medical doctor or specialist I previously saw for any number of injuries over the years look at my entire body rather than just treat the symptom? I'll answer this for you: because they are indoctrinated with treating symptoms. This is why I keep repeating myself about questioning matters that pertain to health and if some of these doctors really know the body or just the bare minimum.

If I were to tell people to put coffee up their ass, I'd tell you to take it, pot and all and put it up there.

I'll tell anyone whatever I like, especially when it pertains to bad diagnosis or diagnosis that is out of the realm of their scope. Experience is a powerful teacher. Someone online isn't going to change what I say to anyone, about anything.

Have a nice day.

Because it’s unrealistic for a doctor to find everything wrong with you? Doctors treat symptoms because unless something is bothering you, they won’t find it.

I think in general someone who needs 8-12 years of schooling/experience knows more than you or I about their field.

I don’t care how passionate or upset you get over this. Sometimes treating the symptom is the answer.
