As a martial artist myself I feel like the UFC/WME-IMG has tarnished our image as martial artists

I think the common association with mixed martial arts is the meathead douchebag fan, and the people who make that connection probably don't know anything about company ownership, or changes to the product in the last few years.

So, she was probably just reacting to one of your other glaring flaws when she was turned off.

More like UFC tarnished the image of UFC.

Most casuals would probably struggle to see the TMA roots in the product presented on screen in all but a few rare cases.

When people learn I have practiced karate for years they don't turn up their noses because they imagine me stomping heads in a steel cage.

With all this “WWE-esque” stuff UFC is pulling lately I feel like they are giving us martial artists a bad wrap among general public.

For example, I went on a date this past Friday and she asked me what I liked to do as a hobby. When I told her I practiced martial arts she was disgusted and associated it with all the negative aspects of UFC and the fighters (the shit talking, violence outside the Octagon, lack of sportmanship etc.). My date pretty much went downhill after that and now she won’t even respond to my texts. No joke.

Is it just me? Any martial artists on Sherdog feel the same?
Just find you a date that's not a condescending as fuck moral authoritarian and I'm sure your opinion will change.

I bet you straight up told her you train the UFC with a puffed up chest like so

and she gave you that Shogun look.

Should've told her you train the forgotten art of Pride and she'd be wet instantly.

How does anyone not like Shogun?

Also TS, the reason MMA has a bad rep is because of the fans. They are little boy fucktards who get all excited by trash talking and fake rivalries. It is honestly very pathetic and I can see why people look down on it. I never admit to anyone that I like MMA.

It used to be pure, just a competition to find who the best fighter was. Now it is a damn freakshow circus. Nothing but trash talking and marketing and profit.

How do you know when someone trains UFC? Don’t worry, he’ll tell you.

It hasn’t tarnished the image of martial artists. Before the UFC, all non-martial artists didn’t care that you trained in martial arts. Now, post UFC, they still don’t care.

Well me and a bunch of other Karate kids learned we needed some ground game, so it brought reality to a lot of us. I was a B.B. in TKD in the best shape of my life....no TDD. Had to learn that shit later.

I showed this hawt chick my leet martial arts skills once. She said I looked like a homosexual cos I was lyin on the floor in my tight shorts drippin sweat onto some dude. She didn't understand I was bein a MMA fighter, not makin gay porn like she tried to claim.

I wish there were some bigtime martial arts movie stars in the USA.. the second coming of Chuck Norris and the next gen Jackie Chan. That would replace the sleazy reality of karate with good old bullshit that makes us look cool again.
The Rock's family is on the top floor of a burning skyscraper. On each floor, the inferno is guarded by a different kind of martial arts master. He must defeat each one and extinguish the blaze before moving on.
On the final floor, he defeats the boss after a lengthy battle but finds his extinguisher is finally out of sauce. He must use meditation to quell the fire. He hears the voice of his sensei during this scene.
Finally frenzied firefighters bust into the room, to see that everything is frozen over. The Rock and his family walk past them and he tells them to 'chill out, bros'

I never had problems when I was competing outside of nagging on weight cut days

While you were talking UFC, did you happen to mention that you were only a blue belt on Sherdog? That might have turned her off

well I'd take it as a good litmus test personally. ufc image aside it'd probably be better if you found a woman who appreciated, enjoyed and understood martial arts just like you do even if she doesn't train. sounds like it's a big part of your life. it'd be good to have that in common with a mate.

Why do you feel like you are connected to them just because you do the same sport. The girl's negative reaction comes from ignorance, you need to thicken your skin a little.

Sounds like TS is trying to shift the blame of why his date bombed. Never in my life have I, or anyone else I've ever met had a woman completely cut off contact when they heard about a martial arts hobby lol.

Actually, people watching UFC are a lot less douchy, assholish, trash talking, dumb, etc etc than people at other sporting events

I taught all my exes basic armbars and triangles of the back... in case they were put in some danger by guys or something... you know... the ladies appreciated it. Nowadays if I do it, they call me a psycho.
I tried "teaching" my wife triangles until she realized it was just an excuse to her head in my crotch. Now i have to sneak up on her in her sleep and just slap her with it.
