The Veteran referee tells a scary story about an injury in July of 2017 in his most recent appearance with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour. BJM told listeners that he has had damage done to his neck from grappling. Last July the injury while showing a technique known as the D’arce choke, BJM injured his neck leaving him Paralyzed.

“I hurt my neck really bad. I actually got paralyzed on one side of my body.” The injury involved the C5, C6, and C7 vertebra of his neck, and he described the injury as a ‘stinger’ something football or hockey players have used.

“The [nerves] that were leading into my arms just were crushed,” McCarthy said. “My thumbs were completely numb, my fingers were numb. I had that burn coming down from my shoulders. It just was a serious problem.

I’m not the same person. I used to be able to do things, I could grab someone and pick them up. Those days are gone for me. … It taught me a lesson and it made me realize how fast I can absolutely lose what I love doing.”

Damn bro. That sucks. I wonder how much force they were using on him. He is a giant fucker maybe the guy thought he needed to squeeze with all his life.

I hope him well. I remember him just throwing dudes off each other. He must have beeen strong as fuck.

I thought you meant Joe D'Arce

A darce choke partially paralyzed him?

What the fuck?

edit: Being inside of a neck cranky darce for 90 seconds when you've had neck surgery before is probably not the best idea.

This is still a freaky story because I've never heard of anyone getting injured with this strangle before let alone seriously hurt like this.

I listened and he said he was letting a student choke him and he said the student was applying it super neck cranky and he was directing the student to make adjustments while inside of the choke for about 90 seconds, and that he had previously had surgery on his neck.

I'm guessing that played a part. 90 seconds is a long time to be receiving pressure from any sort of head and arm or guillotine style strangle.

“Paralyzed” usually is taken to mean you can’t move. “Left paralyzed” means it’s permanent.

Sounds like he has nerve damage down his arm, from which you may or may not recover. It can include loss of muscle function. I’ve heard of people with divots in their arms because the muscle has stopped working and has atrophied. And heard of folks that can’t cut a steak with the afflicted arm. So it’s no joke.

I’m dealing with some now due to a herniated disc and bone spur.

But the “left partially paralyzed” is click bait unless you are telling me he can’t use his arm(s).

Having neck surgery and letting dude full power darce u is not smart . Neck and back , and knees are three areas u don’t duck around with too ttoo much in BJJ . Especially neck .

I remember back in the day when I first started getting good at the darce, I trapped a larger sparring partner in one and he thought he could muscle and break out. Unfortunatley I had it locked and he tapped before going to sleep, he sat out for almost 2 weeks, said his neck all the way down to his fingers where numb, and he could hardly feel them.

These techniques are made to maim/kill if they are pushed to the limit.

Probably just wasn't the one choke.

I am willing to bet he had plenty of chronic cervical spine damage from years of grappling, and this was the choke that finally induced some neuropathy.

It's my favorite move, I use it all the time because everybody reacts the same under side control, they push on my torso and I sink a whizzer, I put my long skinny arm under their neck an I go for a d'arce. Usually I try to finish it without torquing it, I just go with pressure but if they don't tap I'm gonna torque it by going on my hip and trying to mount them.

In training I just fight them if there's no torquing and if I'm able to stay square with them. Same thing with guillotines. I work to position myself to be square with them so my neck isn't bent, but if it goes ''sideways'' I tap immidiately, having small neck issues, I like to sleep at night too much to try and tough a d'arce out.

Great post. It's my favorite move too.

I've found also that finishing with the lock "on top" also helps crank their neck less, and the choke is super clean because the floor helps press their shoulder into the side of their neck and the floor kills a lot of their defense. This was and stepping over to the mounted finish you describe are my two favorite angles to finish from. Not only are these 2 angles powerful but they're easier on my wrists because it keeps their weight off my lock.

edit - Cobrinha shows both finishes here:

Lol look at all the armchair Darce specialists in here.
Yeah because nobody in here trains.

This and the UG are really the only grappling forums left with a lot of veteran grapplers on it. Reddit BJJ is populated by mostly white and blue belts.

There are way more brown and black belts that post over here.

Damn right. I'm personal friends with three common posters here. All three are black belts. I'm a blue but an old nasty blue, and my coach is realllllllly slow to promote, old school standards. When guys come in for open mats, I tap most purples, a lot of browns, and hold my own with blacks.

Back to the topic. Any type of arm triangle can get cranky. It takes a lot of adjustment and knowledge to make them proper chokes. A really strong guy had me in a sloppy one the other day. I probably could have eventually escaped, but it started to feel cranky. I've had neck issues before. No thanks. I tapped.

That sounds really old school re: promotions. I respect that.

As far as the various arm triangles I think it's strange. Some people only tap to them if they're super clean but then I know others that basically will let themselves go out and will only tap if you put some crank on them. They're definitely a more nuanced family of techniques either way.

I kind of love being a blue belt still lol. It's like being a sleeper car. Part of it is just training irregularity. I'm always getting injured so just tend to train a month or so at a time but I got my blue belt in like 2004 lol (I DID have a seven year hiatus, but still...)

Yo that's crazy.

I was a blue belt for almost 7 years and I thought that was a long time. Wow. Man there's the biggest skill gap at blue. There are blues that are in your situation and have been in the game forever and a day, and can give anyone a run for their money. And there are blue belts that barely know how to shrimp. Crazy skill differentials at blue.

Haha yep. At this point I know one day my coach is gonna give me my purple belt and I'll probably be kinda sad lol
