BLACK PANTHER Trailer Racks Up 89 Million Views in First 24 Hours

Judging by the numbers, viewers are ready to take a trip to the African nation of Wakanda.

The teaser trailer for Black Panther, Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie based on the character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, generated 89 million views in the first 24 hours of its debut.

The spot debuted Friday during the first quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC. It was then released on various social media platforms.

The numbers are welcome news for Marvel as it shows strong interest in the upcoming stand-alone film, which is a gutsier venture for the studio that has in many cases relied on the familiarity of its main cast of Avengers to float its stand-alone pics. Black Panther features an unprecedented predominantly black cast and no box office titans, and, his appearance in 2016's Captain America: Civil War notwithstanding, stars a character that is not largely known on the level of other superheroes.

Chadwick Boseman is playing T’Challa, aka Black Panther, the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda who must defend his people from threats internal and external. Ryan Coogler directed the movie that is set to bow Feb. 16, 2018.

The 89 million-view figure includes the 19 millions views from those watching the NBA Finals.

While the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok is Marvel and parent company Disney’s most-watched ever (with 136 million views), Black Panther lands in the top 3 of most-watched Marvel trailer content.

Black Panther surpasses the views for teasers for top Marvel and Disney-released movies such as Captain America: Civil War (61 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (55 million) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (52 million).

Black Panther was also massive on Twitter, generating 349,000 mentions in 24 hours. It generated more mentions than the NBA game during which it debuted, second only to the launch of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser.

BLACK PANTHER Begins Production; First Synopsis Released; Andy Serkis Confirmed

Press Release: Marvel Studios announced today that production has begun on Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, with Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett with Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Additional cast members include Letitia Wright (Urban Hymn), Winston Duke (Person of Interest,), Florence Kasumba (Emerald City), Sterling K. Brown (The People v. O.J. Simpson) and John Kani (Captain America: Civil War).

Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) directs Marvel Studios’ Black Panther from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole (The People v. O.J. Simpson). The film, which opens in U.S. theaters on February 16, 2018, will be shot in Atlanta and South Korea.

Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Based on the Marvel comic character that first appeared in “Fantastic Four Vol. 1” Issue 52, published in 1966, Black Panther joins Marvel Studios’ slate of releases in its Phase 3 commitment to introduce film audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites over the course of four years and nine films.

First Set Photos from BLACK PANTHER; Martin Freeman Confirmed to Appear

It looks like Martin Freeman is officially going to be in Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther movie. The 45-year-old actor was spotted on the set of the upcoming standalone movie on Saturday (January 21) in Atlanta, Ga. [Click here to see the set photos.]

Also spotted on set were Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong’o. They were reportedly filming a UN meeting scene on the rainy day. There have been rumors swirling for over half a year that Martin would appear in the film, though there has not been an official confirmation. Freeman previously appeared as Everett K. Ross, an ally to Black Panther, in the movie Captain America: Civil War.

Emmy Winner Sterling K. Brown Joins the Cast of BLACK PANTHER

Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther in the role of N’Jobu, a figure from T’Challa aka Black Panther’s past.

Brown recently won an Emmy Award and is Golden Globe-nominated for his portrayal of Christopher Darden in The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The veteran stage and screen actor also garnered Screen Actors Guild and NAACP Image award nominations for the role as well as for the critically acclaimed TV show This Is Us.

Directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman in the title role alongside Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba. The film arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018.

Angela Bassett to Play T'Challa's Mother in Marvel's BLACK PANTHER

Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Marvel's Black Panther. Ryan Coogler is directing the project, which will star Chadwick Boseman in the title role.

Actors Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke and Florence Kasumba also are on the call sheet.

Bassett will play Ramonda, mother of T’Challa, aka Black Panther. The film is slated for a Feb. 16, 2018, release.

Bassett is one of the stars of American Horror Story, Fox’s horror anthology, with her work garnering two Emmy nominations. She last appeared on the big screen in London Has Fallen and before that, Spike Lee’s Chi-raq.

Newcomer Letitia Wright has joined Marvel’s Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman. Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira are also on board. Creed helmer Ryan Coogler will direct.

Forest Whitaker and Two More Join Marvel's BLACK PANTHER

Forest Whitaker has joined the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman. Daniel Kaluuya and Florence Kasumba have also joined the cast.

Whitaker will play the role of Zuri, an elder stateman in Wakanda. Kasumba will reprise her Captain America: Civil War role as Ayo, a member of the Dora Milaje. Kaluuya will play T’Challa confidant W’Kabi

PERSON OF INTEREST's Winston Duke to Play M'Baku in BLACK PANTHER

Person of Interest actor Winston Duke has landed the key role of the villain M’Baku — aka Man-Ape — in Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther film starring Chadwick Boseman.

The film, directed by Creed helmer Ryan Coogler, also stars Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong’o. Boseman will play T’Challa, the prince of the African nation of Wakanda, who must take over the mantel after his father’s murder. Marvel unveiled the character in Captain America: Civil War before the standalone film bows on Feb. 16, 2018.

In the comics, M’Baku was one of Wakanda’s most powerful warriors and one of T’Challa’s biggest rivals.

Joe Robert Cole is co-penning the script with Coogler. Kevin Feige is producing the movie.

Marvel had been testing several actors for the role over the past week, including The Get Down actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, before casting Duke. Duke is relatively new to the industry, having recently graduated from the Yale School of Drama. He had recurring roles on several TV shows, including Major Crimes, The Messengers, and Person of Interest.

First Story Details for Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Revealed

While on stage in Comic-Con’s Hall H, Black Pather director Ryan Coogler didn’t say much about his Marvel film, mainly because he’s still working on the script and there’s still a ways before production commences. That said, newly cast Lupita Nyong’o did reveal the first plot details to Marvel during the red carpet press rounds following the panel.

From the Marvel Studios presentations, we know that Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) and Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) play Okoye and Nakia, members of Wakanda’s elite special forces unite called the Dora Milaje. Nyong’o further revealed during an interview with a Marvel.com correspondent:

"The story of this Black Panther is- what am I allowed to say? – The story is that the Black Panther’s leadership is really threatened by two foes who come together, and so Black Panther gets the help of the C.I.A. and the Dora Milaje to try and defeat the enemy."

Michael B. Jordan was revealed to be one of these foes playing Erik Killmonger. Might the other one by Ulysses Klaw? We already saw Andy Serkis bring this vibranium-hunting comic villain to life in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he walked away with at least one of his arms in tact. Given the character’s ties to Black Panther, the film seems like a logical place for him to appear next, if at all.

The C.I.A. team-up meanwhile is surprising, but explains Everett Ross' (played by Martin Freeman) role. Black Panther hits theaters July 6, 2018.

Cast for Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Officially Announced; New Logo Unveiled

Saturday, during Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con, three cast members of the Black Panther solo film, which will be directed by Ryan Coogler and star Chadwick Boseman (Captain America: Civil War), were officially announced and introduced by Kevin Feige.

The Walking Dead star Danai Gurira is playing Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje. Creedand Fantastic Four star Michael B. Jordan is playing Erik Killmonger. Lastly, Star Wars: The Force Awakensand 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o is portraying Nakia.

Let's start with Nakia and Okoye. In the comics, both of them were part of Dora Milaje ("Adored Ones"), the bodyguards and potential wives of T'Challa (Black Panther), the King of Wakanda. Nakia (a.k.a. Malic) fell hard for T'Challa, but he didn't share a romantic connection with her. She would later become jealous when he became engaged to the American Monica Lynne. As for Okoye, she and Nakia were good friends at one time, but that friendship slowly fell apart as Okoye accepted her ceremonial role and Nakia didn'tt.

Okay, now onto Killmonger, whose real name is N'Jadaka. When N'Jadaka was just a boy, Ulysses Klaw invaded Wakanda, taking Vibranium, killing the king, T'Chaka, and even kidnapping and enslaving some Wakandans. N'Jadaka and his family were among those unlucky souls. Though he would eventually escape to the United States, his family all perished. While in the U.S.A., he changed his name to Erik Killmonger and got a top-notch education, studying engineering and business. However, deep down, he wanted to return to Wakanda and seek out revenge against T'Chaka family because he blamed his and his family's suffering on the former king.

BLACK PANTHER Cast Will Be Comprised of 90% African or African American Actors

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige dropped by The Empire Film Podcast recently and explained why he chose to introduce Black Panther in Civil War, and he also discussed the character's upcoming solo film and its cast.

"That will be amongst the best ensembles we've ever had," Feige said of the Black Panther cast, "and 90% of the cast is either African or African-American."

The cast is off to a great start. Aside from Boseman, the past few days have revealed that Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) and Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are joining the cast.

Black Panther will slash into theaters on February 16, 2018, and will start shooting in early 2017. It is being directed and co-written by Creed and Fruitvale Station filmmaker, Ryan Coogler.

Michael B. Jordan Joins BLACK PANTHER as the Villain Erik Killmonger [Updated]

Michael B Jordan will reteam with his Creed director Ryan Coogler for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, inking a deal to join movie's buzzy cast, THR has learned.

This would be the third time that Jordan will work with Coogler, who is helming the comic book movie as well as writing the script. The first time the duo came together was for the indie drama Fruitvale Station.

Chadwick Boseman is toplining Black Panther while Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to star alongside him. It is unclear who Jordan would play but one source told THR that it could be a villain. Black Panther has a Feb. 16, 2018, release date, with production set to start in early 2017.

Panther won’t be Jordan’s superhero movie debut. The actor last year starred as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Fox’s Marvel franchise, The Fantastic Four. Jordan is currently developing a remake of The Thomas Crowne Affair as an acting vehicle. He will also produce the remake along with the Joe and Anthony Russo.

Lupita Nyong'o in Talks to Star in BLACK PANTHER Movie

Lupita Nyong'o, who won an Oscar for her performance in 12 Years a Slave, is in negotiations to star opposite Chadwick Boseman in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed Creed, is helming the comic book movie as well as writing the script.

Boseman and Black Panther were introduced in Captain America: Civil War, which crossed the $700 million worldwide mark in under a week and a half. The character, whose name is T’Challa, is the warrior king of Wakanda, Marvel’s fictional African nation that is rich in an unbreakable alloy called vibranium.

N’yongo’s character has not been revealed although she will be the Panther’s love interest. Panther has a February 2, 2018 release date with production aiming to start in early 2017.

N’yongo last appeared as the alien Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and lent her voice for the wolf Raksha in The Jungle Book. She is also attached to star in DreamWorks’ Intelligent Life, a sci-fi drama currently seeking a director.

CREED Helmer Ryan Coogler in Talks to Direct BLACK PANTHER [Updated]

Sources close to the negotiations have confirmed to Birth.Movies.Death that Creed and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is in talks to direct Marvel's Black Panther. The deal hasn't yet closed but this is a huge step for Marvel, who wants someone with talent but also with legitimacy, and does Coogler ever have both.

More than that, he was able to work with Sylvester Stallone on a movie featuring Sly's most iconic character and still make it his own. Coogler knew how to hit the beats we want from a Rocky movie while making it fresh and exciting. These skills - handling opinions and finding new angles on well-worn stories - would serve him well on Black Panther.

For Marvel Coogler represents another step forward in filmmaking; he's got awards buzz and his stunning work on Creed shows he has style. More than that, Coogler is the platonic ideal for indie filmmakers going big - he started small, directed Creed at a mid-budget level and will now ascend to the big money blockbuster. It's better than other filmmakers who have jumped from 5 million dollar movies to 250 million dollar movies.

New Details on Black Panther's Vibranium Costume, Fighting Style and More

"He's definitely not the life of the party in this instance," says Boseman, who won the role last October. "I think this is something true of the comic book character and the movie. You never quite know where he stands. There's always a bit of concealing and mystery. So I think mysterious is more his boat. Not to say there's not charm and he can't be a ladies man and all that. It's more like if there is humor, it's more like James Bond."

"There definitely is a sort of tradition that he's torn between, in terms of how things were done in the past and how things need to happen now in this new world," says Boseman, who's best known for playing James Brown in Get On Up and Jackie Robinson in 42. "I think there's perhaps a bit of a maverick there, and then there's also a need to live up to traditions and his father's legacy. And not even his father's legacy, but the entire nation of Wakanda. I think those are the things you will see."

Black Panther's outfit is not actually cloth. It's metal. It's vibranium. "It has a sheen because its a weave of the strongest metal in this fictional universe," says Joe Russo. "It's like medieval chain mail, woven extremely thin," Anthony adds. "It's not comparable to any other costumes in the universe."

"As far as the storytelling is concerned, the vibranium is a metal that is dynamic. It can change how it's used. It's not a liquid, but it has the ability to change shape and change form and still have its strength. I think there a lot of things about that in the mythology that I think has a lot of potential in terms of the storytelling," Boseman says.

Vibranium is not your typical armor. "It's not just about being durable, it has the ability to absorb energy," Boseman says. "It's not just like you hit it and it doesn't take it. It has the ability to absorb the attack of another person and repel or respond to that attack. That's part of the power."

As for fighting style, Black Panther has a unique amalgam of moves. "There are some animal forms, but not just cat. He could be a snake, or various different styles. Obviously there's an opportunity to do some capoeira," the Brazilian martial art that combines fighting with dance, Boseman says.

Part of Panther's power is not just brute strength, but thinking ahead. "The key with T'Challa is to keep everybody on their toes. It's to do the thing that is surprising, that you wouldn't expect. So there's a lot of agility and a lot of, like, 'Why did he do that? Oh now I know why he did that. He was gonna come over here after he did that.' I wouldn't say he's a ninja, but he does employ some of those aspects as well."

Panther's retractable claws are also made of vibranium and since Cap's shield is also forged from the substance: Who wins in a fight? The Russo brothers have a simple answer for that: "We shall see," Joe says.

First Footage of BLACK PANTHER in Action in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Trailer

Disney has released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Marvel Studios sequel Captain America: Civil War. Directed Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), the first film of Marvel's Phase Three slate picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off as Chris Evans' Steve Rogers leads a new team of Avengers. After another international incident involving the superpowered team results in collateral damage, the government - and former Avengers member Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) - begins to meddle with their practices, all the while a new villainous threat looms.

It's clear that with this first teaser trailer, Marvel wanted to get across that this is first and foremost a Captain America movie despite the overstuffed cast. And they do a swell job of setting this up as a continuation of both Age of Ultron and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yes the story finds Cap and Tony at odds, but it looks to be mostly from Steve Rogers' perspective, which should make for an interesting film.

Visually it's in keeping with the tone set in Winter Soldier - plenty of this could pass for deleted scenes from that movie - but there's a shot of Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther that should get fans riled up, as will the "money shot" sequence at the end with Cap and Bucky wailing on Iron Man. Marvel Eyeing Ryan Coogler to Direct BLACK PANTHER Movie

According to Umberto Gonzalez from Heroic Hollywood, Marvel Studios wants Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler to helm their upcoming Black Panther film as director. It is unclear whether or not a deal has been offered at this time. In addition to Fruitvale Station, Coogler has also worked with Michael B. Jordan on Creed.

Ava DuVernay was originally offered the position but declined as she and the studio didn't see eye-to-eye on the project. Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Gray was also considered before he took on Fast and Furious 8 instead. Joe Robert Cole, who comes from the same in-house writer's program that Nicole Perlman was part of when she wrote the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy, is also reportedly in negotiations to write the screenplay for the film.

Marvel's In-House Writer Joe Robert Cole to Pen Black Panther

Joe Robert Cole is in negotiations to write the Black Panther movie for Marvel, THR has confirmed. Cole is a relative newcomer who comes from Marvel's in-house writers program, the same program from which Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman originated. He is also a writer on FX's American Crime Story and worked on Revoc, an alien invasion project that is set up at Summit/Lionsgate.

Black Panther will be Marvel's first feature film that focuses on a superhero of color and has Chadwick Boseman attached to star as T'Challa, the prince of the fictional African nation of Wakanda who must assume leadership after his father's murder.

The project does not have a director attached. Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay was offered the film to direct, but turned the project down, and the producers are now focused on the script before seeking out another filmmaker.

Ava DuVernay Reveals Why She Turned Down BLACK PANTHER

Ava DuVernay also opened up about her meetings with Marvel. "It was really an enlightened day in terms of the quality of journalism," she said of the reports that she had signed on to direct Black Panther, the first Marvel movie starring a black superhero (Chadwick Boseman).

When asked about meeting repeatedly with Marvel head Kevin Feig for the opportunity, DuVernay didn't get excited about it until she did her research on the character and the potential cultural impact. "For me, it was a process of trying to figure out, are these people I want to go to bed with? Because it's really a marriage, and for this it would be three years. It'd be three years of not doing other things that are important to me. So it was a question of, is this important enough for me to do?"

"At one point, the answer was yes because I thought there was value in putting that kind of imagery into the culture in a worldwide, huge way, in a certain way: excitement, action, fun, all those things, and yet still be focused on a black man as a hero - that would be pretty revolutionary," she continued. "These Marvel films go everywhere from Shanghai to Uganda, and nothing that I probably will make will reach that many people, so I found value in that. I think it should be good when it comes out. I'll be there, watching."

SELMA's Ava DuVernay Passes on Directing BLACK PANTHER

Ava DuVernay will not be directing Marvel's Black Panther. The director confirmed the news with Essence Magazine. "I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther," said DuVernay during the Essence Festival. "I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things, and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me."

Chadwick Boseman is attached to the project to play T'Challa, the black superhero who rules the nation of Wakanda. Although DuVernay exclaimed she loved the characters, she didn't agree with Marvel's vision. "I loved meeting Chadwick and the writers and all the Marvel execs," said DuVernay. "In the end, it comes down to story and we just didn't see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later."

"I guess I'll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July weekend and Essence weekend!" expressed DuVernay.

It's Official: Chadwick Boseman Cast as BLACK PANTHER in Five-Film Deal

After 10 films and $7 billion, Marvel Studios is finally stepping up the diversity in their long-range superhero slate. Introduced onstage today alongside Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Chadwick Boseman will be the first African-American superhero to lead a stand-alone Marvel tentpole in Black Panther, which is scheduled to be released Nov. 3, 2017.

Deadline hears Boseman has signed a lucrative five-film deal that begins with 2016's Captain America: Civil War continues through Marvel's just-unveiled Phase 3 lineup.

Boseman joins other diverse characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is the first to get his own standalone and that is notable.

Boseman is best known for his roles in 42 and Get On Up, playing Jackie Robinson and James Brown, respectively. The Black Panther - created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby - was a long-serving member of the Avengers who also enjoyed multiple critically acclaimed solo runs throughout his 48-year history.

Dragonlord's Fantasy Casting Vol. 3: BLACK PANTHER

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Stan Lee have been alluding for months now that a Black Panther movie will be announced in the future. Allow me to present my Black Panther dream cast.

NATE PARKER as BLACK PANTHER

Nate Parker is my top choice to play T'Challa a.k.a. Black Panther after seeing him in Arbitrage. He just has the looks and physical pressence to play the prince of Wakanda. Parker's other George Lucas-produced Red Tails and Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer.

DJIMOUN HOUNSOU as T'CHAKA

Probably because they only know a few black actors, a few posters have said that they want Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther. I think they're wrong as Hounsou is 48 years old and too old to play T'Challa. He'd be perfect as the father, T'Chaka, though - old but still be able to do the action scenes.

NATHALIE EMMANUEL as SHURI

Shuri is the younger sister of T'Challa and at one point, took on the mantle of Black Panther. My original pick was Heather Hemmens (Hellcats) but have since replaced her with the beautiful and sexy Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones, Furious 7).

SHARLTO COPLEY as KLAW

Ulysses Klaw is a physicist who has been transformed into solid sound, and wears a sonic emitter on his right wrist as a prosthetic device. Klaw is the archenemy of Black Panther. South Africa's Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) would be great in the role.

JASON MOMOA as KRAVEN THE HUNTER

Though known primarily as a Spider-Man villain, I thought Kraven the Hunter is a perfect fit in the world of Black Panther. And who better to play the famous big game hunter than Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones)

ADEWALE AKINNUOYE-AGBAJE as MAN-APE

Man-Ape is one of Black Panther's recurring enemies and is often portrayed trying to challenge T'Challa for the throne of Wakanda. The physically-imposing Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) would be terrific in the role.

There was an episode of the Fantastic 4 where they traveled to Africa to help the Black Panther defeat Dr. Claw and I had it on VHS as a kid. It was pretty awesome.

Unveiling Black Panther in this trailer was pretty damn smart. The trailer that debuts Spiderman, if they have one, will shatter 60 mill.

I know the DC fans are mad because alot of people are shitting on their Supes vs Bat, but Marvel has trialed and errored this shit and know what they are doing (for the most part), at least in the Avenger universe so far.

This movie is going to break records too.
