BOXING FOOTWORK

over stepping out to my left with my left foot

your slipping the orthodox cross from southpaw, by stepping left with your rear/left leg?

I was thinking you were slipping the cross to your left, by stepping to your left with your lead leg, and then pivoting, like in the video, just "backwards"

i like to do both,
But prefer stepping left with my lead leg and pivoting because it’s slicker

I always wondered this as no one had ever explained this to me.
I did watch a video though which said to step your rear leg in just before you throw the right, after your jab.

Starts at 03:00 mins in

But what about without a jab first? Just lead with the rear hand.

I say just outside pocket if you have similar reach or just inside pocket if opponent has longer reach.
I was taught to bring the rear leg in a step before throwing the cross if you cannot reach your opponent without leaning forward on full extension, which obviously you shouldn't do. So depends.
