"Brazil’s incoming president Jair Bolsonaro has named a career diplomat sympathetic to US President Donald Trump as foreign minister. On Wednesday, Mr Bolsonaro took to Twitter to hail Ernesto Araújo, currently head of the US and Canada department at the foreign ministry, calling him a “brilliant intellectual”. Last year, Mr Araújo, 51, wrote a veiled praise to the US President in an academic paper titled “Trump and the West”, where he stated that “there is nothing isolationist” in the Mr Trump’s foreign policy as he wants to “evidently lead the West”, adding that Brazil has a chance to recover its “Western soul”, by searching for its “national sentiment”.
Mr Bolsonaro has made it clear that he looks forward to being a strong US ally. Analysts believe the far-right president-elect will attempt to emulate much of Mr Trump’s nationalist agenda, at the risk of upending Brazil’s longstanding tradition of “rainbow” diplomacy, that typically sees the country stay neutral on foreign policy. Like the US president, he has criticised China’s economic advances, lambasted leftist regimes such as Venezuela and Cuba, and vowed to move Brazil’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
