The bill would subsequently get rid of either George Washington or Abraham Lincoln's birthday as a holiday and designate May 1 as “International Workers’ Day."

International Socialist Workers' Day, or "May Day" had been observed in countries under Communist rule and was an official holiday of the Soviet Union.

This seems like an attempt to try and stifle American history. Why not just create a new holiday and call it "International workers day?" While there is definitely a socialist overtone here (which I do not agree with) a day celebrating international workers is fine, as America is a melting pot and should be celebrated as such. I just don't find it necessary to piss on our forefather's who got us here.

If you're going to give workers a day off for something, might as well make it relevant to workers.
Who here celebrates Washington and Lincoln's birthday? Columbus Day?

Sounds like Cali is getting in line with the rest of the first world on May Day and leaving the old racists behind

do we still get the day off? then who gives a shit tbh

changing 'easter break' in school to 'Ceaser Chavez day' wouldn't bother me in the slightest if I still got the day off, just saying

When I was in HS, the state of VA celebrated LeeJacksonKing day.....that's right, two slaveholding Confederate Generals on the same day as MLK Jr......we got the day off though, so whatever haha

The Don would never let this happen

California - doing its best to separate itself from the United States.

It's actually kind of amazing how racist Virginia STILL is.

California is run by communists.

wait a minute. Arent the confederates the ones who lost a war they started in your country in defense of slavery and you are saying that being against that= communism?

If this is really about workers would it not be better to give them there own new day off and still let them keep the old one too

Also I was told that we were only going to take down confederate statues put up during the jim crow era and that we werent going to try to re write history or erase the founding fathers or anything crazy like that and yet here we are taking steps down that path

Its called Labor Day

If you had put a gun to my head and threatened to blow my brains out if I didn't tell you whose birthdays were on that day, I'd be a dead son of a bitch.

Who cares. I don't get those days off anyways.

You're right. I suppose we could also consider cutting out Martin Luther King Day for it while we're at it.

I'd argue MLK is still relevant, but I'd be okay with that no longer being a national holiday.
Keep it as a calendar holiday, along w/ iconic POTUS' birthdays, but lets get some national holidays that make sense.
