Chicago police under fire after 'bait truck' used to lure thieves

OK, run it down for us.
How would you go about doing so?

Invest way more funds in tax fraud. Set up fake firms and accountants to lure rich folks into the scam and nab them.

Panama papers came out, who is doing serious time?? Steal from shoes and we mad worried? Worried about the welfare mom scamming her stamps for liquor? Shit it’s all backwards. The real criminals are at the top not the bottom. The problem is the real criminals are in bed with the politicians

Why not done bait off shore banks to catch tax evaders?? Oh yea we ain’t worried about that

yeah, i'm sure the chicago PD was going to set up an international sting operation right after they dropped off this bait truck with $2000 worth of shoes. setting up off shore bank accounts are well within the the chicago pd's jurisdiction and well within their budget...i'm pretty sure. that is what the chicago pd should be concerned about, not the fact that the crime rate within the city is insanely high.

genius

keep the whataboutism's coming, though

I’m sure the streets of Chicago are much safer now that the show thieves are dealt with. We need more bait trucks and less schools and social programs. That will solve the issues surrounding poverty fo sho

And when these youths get out of jail they will be totally reformed and head back to school and end up with good jobs and opportunities. It’s a win win win for everybody involved. Especially the tax payer footing the bill for the police sting, legal fees and incarceration. It’s all proven to reduce crime long term. Just like the war on drugs

yes, the chicago PD should spend there time and resources building schools instead of trying to stop crime in chicago...amazing

Amazing that police budgets rise and rise while social ones fall eh. And police have to use to budget or it won’t keep rising. You think all the money doesn’t come from one pool but separately? Where does the police budget come from? Thin air? .... amazing indeed

the police use the budget the are given to police their area, it's not on them to build schools with their budget.

Police have an inflated budget was my point and they want to use it so it keeps rising. It comes from the city budget. The same that covers education and social programs. You can take from one and give to the other. Silly programs like this and war on drugs which have proven to have no long term positive effects on crime or poverty is better spent elsewhere. It’s not a coincidence that the poorest areas have the worst schools and social programs plus the highest crime rates. Poverty is the root cause not criminal mentality. You can’t police or arrest your way out of the situation. It has to start at grass roots giving the youth more hope and opportunity. That is money well spent

Not a fan of white collar crime, either, but they tend to be a bit more clever in regards to their crimes. If it turned out be a cost effective, results producing undertaking, I'm not against it. But it sounds a little more complicated than planting an unlocked car in a crime ridden neighborhood.

so instead of fighting crime with the budget they are given, you're suggesting the police department refuse a part of the budget they are allocated in hopes that the politicians use it responsibly?

No they are greedy and would never do that. They love silly programs that waste money.

It’s the people that need to wake up and realize you reduce poverty as you reduce crime. Filling up jail cells doesn’t do that and stealing shoes won’t lock up these kids for long. Now you have a more hardened criminal with a record which means say less opportunity and more likely to commit worse crimes down the road. What does this solve in your mind??

so what the fuck is the police department supposed to do with the budget they are given? you don't want them to try to fight crime with it, obviously.

They need more programs to interact with communities instead of just policing them. You know, walk the beat, get to know the people as human beings and not marks to hit quotas on. Spend the money on violent crime and focus on that instead of numbers. Stop over militarized and wasting funds.

As I said it’s like any government program with a big budget. It needs to be spent or it will be reduced. When was the last time a police budget in a major city got reduced? Chiefs will lose their jobs promoting that. Unions will go crazy. We need people who actually want the best for these communities working in them not treating them like enemies in a war zone.

and what if the community doesn't want to talk to them/wants to kill them? cops used to walk the beat, until it became too dangerous to do that in certain areas.

"pigs in a blanket fry em like bacon"
“what do we want? DEAD COPS! When do we want it? NOW!”
you would tell your workmate to walk through a community that thinks this way?

they are trying to do the best for a community that hates them. truckers were being robbed, so the cops tried to catch the thieves, but the community intervened and started telling everyone about which trucks were bait trucks. the community isn't letting the cops help them. i would have figured a community would like to get rid of thieves, but not these idiots. not as long as the cops are the ones getting rid of the thieves.

and i still don't understand how the chicago pd is supposed to build more schools and stop off shore bank accounts like you were suggesting earlier.

The powerful aren’t the politicians but the ones “donating” to their campaigns. If you want better enforcement demand better legislation from the people we vote into office. That being said, some Chicago politicians are far worse than the individuals in the article. These alderman who somehow still have jobs don’t do anything for their constituents but lie and rob them, and their neighborhoods.

desperate like stealing designer shoes instead of food...or getting a job?

Oh, they didn't stop at the shoes, they stole everywhere else you listed. The steal to flip for $
